View Full Version : 30 sec of 2k ProRes footage! Leaves, motion...

Two weeks ago I was asked by a production company interested in my Red to film some shots of leaves. They said it was the weak point of all the other HD cameras they had worked with.
So I shot a 31 second clip and exported it raw from RedAlert as a 2k Tiff sequence and then opened that sequence in Quicktime and made a 2k ProRes 422 HQ clip. That clip is 800 mb! Well Chris Lyon, being the amazingly cool guy he is, has volunteered to host that file. There were some troubles downloading, so Chris said to make sure to double click on the file (once you are on his site).
http://www.redrelay.net/relay.html?path=/0027 - Shawn Nelson/Leaves_ProRes422.mov
For people without the bandwidth, and without the capability of viewing ProRes, Ken Kupelian (Chazmo) has made a 2k H264 version encoded at 24Mbps that's only 67mb. http://brainspasm.com/red/Leaves_H264.mp4
This was shot on a heavily overcast day at ISO320, using the Red Zoom. It was focused using Graeme's focus assist with the zoom in feature and exposed using the FalseColor exposure aid. It was exported completely raw, to show what this can look like. With some simple grading, this can really pop!
I'd strongly encourage people to download the ProRes version, grade it, and upload a 1k downsize back up for us to see. I would love to see what can come from this.
Enjoy!

Thanks Shawn!
Just a simple request for anyone thinking of doing a grade and sharing it. Can you encode in h.264? Some of us don't have access to the ProRes codec yet... :waaa:
[EDIT] I just noticed the h.264 version of the original. You're awesome Shawn (and Chazmo)...

Motion blur is too high, I think. Running children are like ghosts - they're too fast :-) Leaves are beautiful. I saw MP4 version. Thanks Shawn.

I don't have FCS2 ... this is from the h.264. I'm sure I could've gotten a better result from the ProRes original.

I don't have ProRes capability so this is from the 2k H264. I had a quick play in Vegas (4 minutes to be exact). A resulting frame at 1k and all the adjustments I did are shown above. I tried two different exports of a 1k resolution version:
RED-Leaves-1k-cc-jpb.mp4 (http://www.bealecorner.org/red/RED-Leaves-1k-cc-jpb.mp4)
RED-Leaves-1k-cc-jpb.mov (http://www.bealecorner.org/red/RED-Leaves-1k-cc-jpb.mov)
...also linked at bottom of -> this page (http://www.bealecorner.org/red/).
The .mp4 plays fine in VLC or Nero Showtime, but has a huge CPU load and is jerky in Quicktime 7.2 Player (but otherwise, image quality is ok in all three). This was exported using the MainConcept AVC (.mp4) encoder.
The .mov looks fine plays and smoothly in Quicktime, but the image is way too dark (gamma problem) in VLC and Showtime. This was exported using the Quicktime 7 MPEG4-Video option.
Once more, thanks to Shawn for posting the footage! The leaves look great to me. You are the posting superstar here, there should be some kind of award.

Yes, working now... Thanks.
I'm not complaining because you're doing a great thing here, but I'm seeing lots of jumbled text, lines of text shifting down a row from where they should be, etc... Probably all glitches you're aware of that still need to be ironed out. Also, when I click the download cart option, the site times out after 30 seconds with an error. Seems to work just fine double-clicking the file to download it though. ...The download cart worked for me the other day, but not today. Just FYI.

You must be using Safari. I'm not sure what it is about Safari and my site, but it jes don work, mon! Try yous a Mozilla product like Camino.
We are working on redoing the site completely in the near future with more options like descriptions, thumbnails, etc. It will be completely built from the ground up with Safari compatibility in mind.

Shawn, what were their comments about leaves when they saw the Red footage?
I can't believe that I can actually see insects flying past the leaves, along with a spattering of rain in this scene. Truly remarkable.
Thanks for uploading quality footage for us red-less horsemen to play with.
In this clip, I've changed the color palette of the scene as the camera pans, to give it some contrast from the beginning scene (with warm fall tones) to the dark house in the woods with its cooler tones and mysteriously bright garden.
I darkened the woods for the pan, so they act as a transition to the final scene, and contrast nicely with the brighter, innocent children -- who are completely oblivious to the evil presence that has returned. :)
It's not over the top (I don't like heavily crushed and clipped footage), but I think it's in keeping with how a piece in a story would be handled.

Edit, I read your last line.

10-09-2007, 10:11 PM
Thanks, guys.
Yes, it was the ProRez version, in Shake, with four masks --
1 tracking with the leaves as their own layer with their own color,
1 vignetting the leaves (subtle),
1 vignetting the forest/house element bkgd - emphasis on the woods with blue shadows,
and 1 fading in a brighter pinkish (innocent) palette for the flowers and children (as the camera settles).
I just felt that since Red keeps getting compared to film that we might as well impliment the same techniques used to make film look good :)
Cheers.

Wow, McDiver, that looks really great! Truely shows the versatility--nice work.
Shawn, to reiterate McDiver's question: What did the client think?
How about dropping a couple of those kids in a pile of leaves and having a leaf fight to really see how it handles the leaves? At sunset? Maybe some slow motion? FEED US!!!
As always, Shawn, thank you very much for your continued contributions.

Lol, I already gave you one of those kids jumping on a trampoline at 72fps with leaves bouncing with him :-).
So to answer the question about the clients. It was a real shame. It was a $20mil feature, with stars that most of you would recognize, and they were wanting Red#27 as the A-cam. They loved this clip and they were moving forward when they had a meeting with the exec producers who put the stops to the whole Red idea, the movie is now going into production on 35mm. The reasons cited were that Red was new, and that Red had not gotten back to them about putting them in contact with any DPs who had shot with Red (such as Soderberg's or Jackson's DPs) and that I wouldn't fly across country to do a free demo on my dime (like Panavision would, they retorted). Sorry for no details about who this is. My contact inside is a terrific fellow and I hope to do future business with him.

Sorry to hear that, Shawn. Fear of losing money tends to make people pretty timid/conservative (not politically, but traditionally). And in the end, most people have to bow to the money guy, who ironically could be the guy with the least imagination who struggles the most with his programmable tv remote :)
Your time will come.
Hey FlameOp, what are you doing in Final Cut?! (Had to ask :))
Not getting a gamma shift on my G5 -- I'll try my laptop at home. How old is your laptop (pre-intel?) Maybe the older graphics cards won't handle the built-in gamma correction Final Cut uses to simulate a broadcast monitor. I'm sure you've read the stuff at Apple on this, but in case you haven't, here's the link. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93794 The manual talks about this in some detail, too.
Apple's background with print media has it stuck in the 1.8 gamma world like the ol' one-button mouse, I'm afraid. 1.8 is also kinder on the eyes, IMO. I just wish we could hit a button, switch gamma for the whole monitor (like we can through the preferences), and leave all that in-application gamma switching stuff out of it. It's becoming their little "windows legacy" problem, if you ask me. Not that I'm complaining or anything.

Sanjin, an appealing CC of the ProRes file. Has a slightly cool blue hue to it. Context and what use the clip represents may dictate if a choice of more warmer/amber colour temperature be applied. Highlights preserved, those pesky white flowers. Cool stuff, and Red's resolution has me drooling.

Christopher totally agree. And as we know well that not all about a picture quality can be achieved in postproduction. Something that comes before very important that could determinate a lot of the movie look & feel is a GLASS choice. Our still photography experience show us that a different glass can produce a different result. Zeiss, Cooke, RED, Angenieux, Nikon, Canon, Leica, Schneider Kreuznach, Fuji, Lomo, Elite just to mention some of them.

Indeed Sanjin. I recently acquired a set of 35mm cinema camera Lomo's and prefer them to my Nikon SLR's, both which I use on one of my 35mm lens adapters. I endeavor to move further up the glass chain, and HD camera chain. I saw some lens connection/converters you posted in another thread. There should be some amazing RED results to ensue as people like yourself get their rigs setup with different mounts, connections and glass. The glass talks to us on screen.

Agree.
And right now I had a talk with a guy who would sell me one old Cooke from 1980s,
Cooke Super Cine Varotal 25-250mm.
With an aperture of f/2.8, it was ideal for special effects and was used to shoot the original Superman film in 1978, the year it was introduced.

The 2k version is stunning. The detail in the 2k compared to your 720p CC is most noticeable. The blue hue is now diminished. I prefer this CC, however, it depends on context and the filmmakers own choice(s), then we enjoy or criticise as viewers. I truly like this one Sanjin, yet I have no reason or context to compare it to any other persons CC, other than you want "to achieve more natural and film look", and IMO, that it is. Thanks for sharing your work Sanjin, and thanks to Shawn of the Red (#27) for the great source footage.

Agree with you Christopher. Again thanks to Shawn of the Red (#27) for the great source footage.
Here it is only about CC testing.
With RED ONE finally we have got a fast and affordable solution for any sort of 2K teatrical release or feature, documentary, commercial, corporate...etc..., ready for film prints or digital projection.
Of course 4K solution is working but it still costs a bit more in postproduction. If a producer can pay it then OK, we go 4K.

Thanx for the footage!!

It's a bit over-saturated and then it has vignetting's darker frame(!?). That looks more like 8mm film projection but not film like 2k for the theater release.
Just my 2 cents.

Anyone having problems with the ProRes file while using Color? All is good, but when trying to use some Color FX the right side of the picture gets all smudged out.. Any suggestions?
And thanks for the file mate, give me more!

I do not have any problem with the Color's "Color FX". For example my the second version of Leaves CC using "Film look" FX with a grain size set to 0. The CC made on MacPro 8-core 9GB memory, with installed two of ATI Radeon X1900 XT cards.

hmm, ok.. Ill try rendering out the file and see if its still there..
Nice setup you got there btw.
Im using MacPro 4-core 4GB memory with one ATI X1900, maybe my precious mac cant handle the data load in preview.
-Thanks for the reply, and nice work on the grading Mr. Third Man!

Emanuel per your request you get exclusive a both version at 2K H264.
You could see in the 1K screen grabs below that the first version has more pale red colors and the second version has more red,
overall color balance is better and a film grain is set on 0. Downloads open for the next 24 hours.
