Import Tax?

Question for anyone who knows more about this:
do we EU citizens have to pay import tax on top of the $17,500 for the RED one? Any dutch folks perhaps know more about this? Rob? Cam-a-lot? Anyone?

I was thinking about this last week and thought, that sucks, EU guys have to pay around $5,000 extra just to get their cameras - But then I realized, with the American Dollar on a steady decent into oblivion, everything should equal out for you guys.. you'll probably even get the camera for less than what us doughboys will pay...and you guys get national healthcare to boot!!!

It looks as if each European country will handle it differently. How come Norway doesn't add import duty on a $17.500 camera? I would like to do the same trick here in Greece!

You don't pay California sales tax outside of California (Or at least outside of America I'm sure). VAT can be reclaimed in most EU countries if you start a company and register for VAT, although of course any money you make using the camera you ought to charge and claim for VAT but if you are buying lots of other stuff in the first year or so that probably isn't a bad idea anyway.

Duty changes for each country and isn't 100% set in stone until the first one ships and an exact description is settled on according to EU Customs and Excise, this could be free or it could be upto 4.9% and it might even be different for individual countries.

I gave them the red.com link and did not try to avoid anything, just wanted to get some numbers down...

Gunleik, that was what I expected, and being businesses - we get the VAT back.... hence only shipping to add to the 17,5 K :-)

For Holland? Yes. But if you have a registered business you can deduct the VAT again.

Hi All,

Bear in mind Sony have to pay an anti-dumping tax of 40% for all high end (broadcast) video cameras made outside the EEC. One of the reasons equipment is so much more expensive in Europe than in the USA.

Hopefully this will not apply to Red, but customs & excise seem to make it up as they go along. I have imported over 100 items in the last few years and taxes always vary, and usually they don't agree with the harmonized code book.

I agree with Stephen. It seems to be a wait and see game. However, I would imagine starting talks with customs early on (before the camera ships) will give you best results.
