I was wondering if we should establish a directory of RED owners by continent/country/state/city to have some sort of safety-net for technical assistance in an emergency and/or rental of additional cams etc while on the road. To make it practical I suggest to list your continent/country/state/city/name/email and (if you agree to put it on a list) cell phone # (incl country code) once your RED was delivered.

just a thought ...

What, and risk another red scare and round of McCarthyism?

Just kidding, I think this is a pretty cool idea. Maybe once we actually have cameras, Jared could set up a region search for user profiles. This site could also add fields to show gear in the user profile. As per my initial joke, there are certainly privacy issues to think of.

Peter,

Something like that would be great. The person you help out today may be the same one that helps you later. The exact way this idea will be set up remains to be seen, but the idea is a good one, and I would think something like that would be in motion at some point in time after the cameras start shipping.

Elcurado, I love your name for this project RED Worldwide Directory and I think lordnumberzero´s suggestion for Jarred to set up a region search on his board would be the most practical way to find the nearest help wherever you are.

Privacy shmivacy, add whatever you want to your profile and select what's visible to public and what's only visible by people in your buddy-list. Far as I know all that can be done in vBulletin.

I am all for the RED Worldwide Directory, count me in.

I'm working on something like that for the east coast, a backup network for emergency crew assistance or equipment replacement. Worldwide would be awesome, but my list isnt that long yet.

Was there discussion before about a Frapper map? Seems like there was, maybe not...

Great idea for those who want to volunteer here on reduser. RED can't/won't publish private info on anyone.

Pixelchef whipped us up one and it's been pretty popular, but it's buried in the rubble by now. Perhaps it could be an off topic sticky or something...

How would it all work? What would be on offer? Who'd do it?

1. Emergency camera replacement.

Okay, Do you have a list of people in your area that have RED camera so you ring them to see if their camera is available and if they want to loan for free/price?

Nice to know who in your area provides this camera backup service (maybe with courier) for price.
Even nicer to know who provides this service for nothing!! Hands up?
I guess this is what networking/ friends/connections is all about!

The first thing is, is to have a contact list of owners in your area.
Red club sounds good too!!
Also, do you trust that person with your camera?
Insurance?

2. Emergency technical support.
Same again. Who knows about the camera? To what level?
Can I ring them a 10pm the night before??
Red club sounds good here too.
Maybe some people want set themselves up as 2nd/3rd line support for a fee?? Don't know what RED inc is doing here??

3. General camera hire (non emergency)
Little bit like emergency hire 'cept it's not an emergency?

Want a first/second/third camera?
...is it for free to 'friends' with RED cameras, when yours is available?
Is it for non RED owners? Insurance blah blah.

I like the idea of having a second RED camera for free when you need it!!

4. General technical support.
Hopefully this forum and 'locals' with Red cameras.
Who’s writing books?
Training?

I sure everyone has lots more question, answers to add.

Sounds good…….local user groups!

I guess the advantage of local user groups is to meet people in your neighbourhood, borrow their gear, sleep with their wife, network, acquire local information/resources, workshops, etc.

Be also nice to set up some structured ‘knowledge tree’ on using the RED camera/accessories. Ideas?

Thanks Jarred, this is great. Can I suggest to include fields stating whether this owner would also be available as a DP or AC and if she/he intends to rent out her/his RED (besides helping out in an emergency) plus a field for your equipment status: planned/reserved/delivered.
I would not hesitate to lend my RED to anybody from this directory of owners in case of a breakdown, if she/he has a track record on this board and a documented RED serial #.

FYI, we do plan on getting a list of people interested in subrenting their Red cameras around the country. There's more to it, but that's one basic step that we'd use in emergencies and overflow rentals.

Gentlemen before our very own eyes we have the birth of RED|NET !

"Company" field gave me a little trouble, since I am a freelancer but I ended up just adding my name there.

How about you place an asterisk next to each required field? That way we will know where to input info and won't have to go back and forth (and re-focus the map every time)

I believe everyone's gonna suggest a little something they think they need so in the end we may end up with a VERY long list so how about just a text field so we can enter whatever info we deem necessary? (No doubt some smartarse will try to put some spam in there so this may be a risky decision after all)
