what is with the quick closing of threads.
I've had to start 2 thread about the 300mm Red lens both of which have been closed without finding out the absolute correct answer.

You are not allowed to talk about the RED 300mm lens. Didn't you get the message?

It's all hush-hush. Like the Norden Bomb sight used during WWII.
The Japanese and Germans (and the Swiss and Canadians and Brazilians and South Africans to name just a few) would like to get their hands on it in order to see better through their cameras.
At least that's what I heard.

I must have missed that memo...
what happens if you talk about the EVF and RED Drives?

Hi Rory,
That thread was closed because you would have gone on to ask why the lens was marked in F stops!

Hmmm....
Evin closed the first 300mm thread -- probably because he felt there was nothing more to say, because the question asked in the originating post had been answered. The second thread was closed because it was redundant.
What question answer are you looking for? Front diameter is 117mm, it takes 43mm screw-on filters in a drop-in receptacle tray.
Steve Gibby had this to say about the 300mm in this thread (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=85520&postcount=30)... A few others have confirmed these measurements, but Gibby was off by 7mm on the barrel diameter.
I just did some rough measurements on my RED 300mm for you:
Lens minus hood = 9"
Detachable hood = 5.5"
Assembled lens = 14"
Weight estimate = 7 pounds
Internal filter receptacle = 43mm (this is where you put screw on ND filters)
Lens barrel thread = approximately 110mm (4.5")
You use the 24" rods with the Universal mount to support the lens, via the rotating ring/screw setup on the lens (red band).
I really like this lens! It's built well, and the images it generates are very crisp. For nature, sports, and adventure travel shooting with RED One, it is a very good choice.
Hope this helps...

Thanks Jeff
So the 300mm has a 117mm front.
Do you know what the 18-50mm has?
I'm trying to put my MB-20 package together.

The 18-50mm has a 114mm front. As I stated in the other thread, if you get a 114mm donut for your MB-20, you will be able to use both the 18-50mm and 300mm successfully. I also posted a picture.

Thanks Brook
So can the 114mm donut stretch to 117mm needed for the 300mm?
and as a side note... have you used Zeiss Standard Speeds with RED?

Hi Evin
Could you join in on the discussion on the Zeiss Standard Speed thread...
I was just about to purchase a set of T2.1's but now reading about the porthole effect with these I'm anxious to hear from people who are using a 16mm, 24mm, 32mm, 50mm & 85mm.

The MB20's 114mm donut has a hard plastic ring at 114mm and a soft rubber that holds it in place. I've found that the 117mm OD front of the 300mm prime squeezes into the soft rubber ring well enough that I personally wouldn't be able to justify spending what is probably a few hundred extra dollars on an additional donut.
That said, if you're putting a mattebox on to protect you from flares, the hood that the lens comes with is your best bet. If you only need one ND, drop one into the lens. A mattebox is really only useful on that lens if you need to stack filters.
I can't honestly remember if I've used standards on the RED yet. I know I've used super speeds a few times with success... the standards should be the same. If memory serves, they have an 80mm OD, so you will need a step-down ring or a second donut. Here's our $0.37 solution on The Engagement.
