View Full Version : Road to Heaven

Filmed: October 13th
Red Settings: ASA 320, Shutter 1/48.
Red Zoom 18mm, F11 (approx)
My dad and I were driving to the coast to film a sunset and we happened upon this scene. I already had Red assembled in my lap so we hopped out, got the Red on the sticks and shot this. For post I slid the curve a bit here and there and did a 2k Tiff export to a 1k H264 downres. I know I blew out my highlights on the right portion of the screen but that's what I wanted. I know some want to protect them at all cost, but this is exactly what felt right- I love the way it gracefully loses the detail to the glory of the sun.
EDIT:
Two mirrors, check out Red Relay! Chris has done some awesome stuff with the site.

This is why I love staying on REDUser until 3am... wonderful new footage from Shawn! :-)
I think it looks great, buddy. At 320, the camera really is noise-free and silky smooth. I know you made a disclaimer already, and I would never question another shooter's artistic motives, but the blown highlights do feel a little "video" to me. That's not to say you made the wrong exposure choice; the way that road softly falls into the warm sunlight looks magnificent... almost surreal. And there are absolutely times when burnt out footage feels appropriate. But the camera itself is looking a little more harsh on those overexposed areas than I'd care for. I suppose everything has its limits.
Anyway, the shot is really nice and I appricate the time you took to share it.

Just an idea: In cases like this, when I want protect highlights to keep them in range, I would put a soft ND in the right third of the pic. Nice shot anyway

I saw Sanjin's CC frame first in this thread, as I d/l the file. From that CC frame, I thought the road may have had a wave pulsing through it. Ride the Wave to Heaven!
Great ethereal grab Shawn. I like the rich enhancements Sanjin, the golden rays of light. The black, a little too crushed on the trees to the right for my liking. The CC certainly brings out all the shape and form in the image, to my eyes.

I would have had your Dad drive down the road and do a few shots
driving up and down the road, lights and and lights off.

Damn Shawn,
That is pretty amazing- You should consider selling that as stock footage. It doesn't get much better then that. Right place at the right time.

Lol, there were cards whizzing by like crazy, I waited until a moment without one. The cars spoiled the look for me. If I had had time, I would have had someone walk down the center of the road.

Exquisite, Shawn. I can't think of any other word for it. And I agree with you in that cars would have given it a completely different tone. Although I admit to visualizing my partner's '49 Cadillac going down that road.

The highlights look quite good to me - a filmic roll-off. Maybe the haze helps...
Can you tell me what lens you had on, Shawn?

That footage looks awesome! Did you shoot that at Ft. Stevens State Park? it looks really familiar, like exactly by the road that goes out to the Peter Iredale shipwreck

Ding ding ding :-) 100% correct, we were nearly to that location. I posted another clip called 'Leaping for the Horizon' that was done a few feet away from that wreckage.

Great colors and nice composition Shawn. Add a deer or a Mustang coming out of the bright light and it would be absolutely perfect :-D

I concur. IMHO blown highlights, when intentional, add to the magic of storytelling.
There are so many scenes in HEROES with blown highlights but at the end of the day they leave an impression and really give a feel (time of day, temeprature) of the location where the action takes place.
Don't know if it makes sense but hope you get what I am trying to get across.

The composition was nice and all, but very boring. No movement what so ever not a leaf twig nothing not even a slow push

Yeah, it's beautiful, but I agree with the others. Without some motion in the frame, you might as well have posted a still image.
For once I can see what Spielberg is talking about. ;)
