View Full Version : Leaping for the Horizon

Filmed: Saturday October 13th
Red Settings: 2k, ASA 500, Shutter 1/120, 72FPS.
Red Zoom

I filmed this two different ways and I can't decide which I like better. Both clips are output raw. Personally, I'd crush the blacks hard to get the silouettes crisp. But I'll let everyone see the originals here.

An interesting side-note is that this was filmed at Ft Stevens park, very close to Astoria, where they shot 'The Goonies'.

Two mirrors, check out Red Relay! Chris has done some awesome stuff with the site.

DUDE! Those rock.....

"Which one's better?"

That's a tough one...

But, there's a lot to be said for the emotion of that leap in "Racing".

Okay, I'll stay up all night..

If you keep em coming..... Please?

Great.

Maybe the second one (FleeTheSun) is more attractive as a moving composition, a divergence movemet,
has more details, dynamics of the feets when jumps in a water, water drops...etc...

Sweet shots! I'm really digging the 72p stuff.

I actually like the second better myself - I'm with Sam that the leap feels emotional, but for some reason I feel more connected to seeing the front of the kids than their backs, even if they're in silhouette. Believe it or not, there is actually a bit of detail in those shadows and you can make out a smile on the last kid's face if you look hard enough.

Or maybe I'm just up way too late. :)

Thank you Shawn, like always your generosity with the redusers put a smile on my face. Wish you'll succeed to work full time in the movie industry. You deserve it.

how clean is the original footage? the small clips are quite noisy in my opinion. maybe you can post a still of the originalstuff to compare?

They are a little noisy, but nothing like I'd expect for that light level.

What really amazes me is how little I dislike the noise. It's very even and random. In my opinion, it has the most organic feel of any digital noise I've ever seen.

Has anyone else noticed these are 16:9 clips?

Shawn, I assume this means REDAlert is processing 16:9 formats now?

Very cool...

The 2K footage has been 16:9 enabled from the get-go.

Thanks for the reference. Does that mean the current 2k formats include both 2:1 and 16:9? From his comment, one could assume 2k was only available in 16:9 at the moment. Just curious.

Sean, your stuff is simply incredible.

These two clips + the road to heaven are the best Red footage I've seen yet from my perspective of the stuff I want to shoot. I love seeing into the forest and still have that full sunlight. This aint no video footage.

I find both clips very compelling, but do feel a bit more emotional attachment to Flee the Sun, there's something more heartening about them coming towards us. But really, it all depends on what your cutting from and what your cutting to.

Thanks for not forgetting us poor begars here. You have been very generous with your postings.

I love your work and often refer to it when trying to demonstrate what all the madness is about for the uninitiated...Thanks so much for sharing those Magical moments that seem to so easily reveal themselves for you!

Wow, thank you, that means a lot to me.

This is how I see the world, full of magic hidden within the mundane. Red enables me to finally capture what I see.
