Where are things with these lenses? Has anyone shot stuff on them? Had them up on a projector? Are there MTF graphs? $180,000 for a set of 10 lenses (is that right?) seems OK if they're all they're cracked up to be. But are they? Really.

I know, I know Sanjin, M series yadda Yadda. I mean these actual lenses.

Its not 180k for 10 but for "8" as the initial set will be 18mm, 21mm, 25mm, 35mm, 40mm, 50mm, 75mm, and 100mm, and later will have the other Focal.

Pretty much in range of other Cine Primes, but as I said before this lenses have nothing in common with other lenses, as they are simply in a category of their own, IQ, Build and Ergonomics.

You will soon lots of images and footage ;)

I love our RPP's and will love them even more now, coming back from Duclos with new added F. Markings, this set will be now an impressive set of lenses,
but we no doubt, will love our new set of Leica Summilux-C as soon as we get them in our new Studios in Italy.

I think Leica is in the middle of the first C set production circle. It takes time and a lot of parts are hand made.

Also they told me that shipping will start in February 2011 but like always with these things everything is subject to change.

Btw, guys don't worry I do have many options to put Leica M (R fits in Canon EOS mount with adapter anyway) on Epic or Scarlet.

Just have to get my hands on both.

Yes ;)

Matt has one of my RPP's sets and we are getting the Focus Markings to be added down, and it looks pretty good, can't wait ;)

Set of 10 Leica rehoused by Van Diemen in PL mount, picked up each one of them for VFG England. Just made a few commercials recently with them ... beautiful lenses.
I can only imagine what the "C" series will be like... delicious...

Officially hijacked!

Remarked RRP's would be great value for money buy they have a bad rep Downunder (who knows how these things start) and the size bothers me. The Leica's look very well thought out - and of course, we have to wait to see how we get them in Australia. If they come through Adeal it's probably a no-deal. What idiots!

Thanks for the info Sanjin, and the measured response. You restrained yourself beautifully.

Shane,

keep in mind that BandPro (http://www.bandpro.com/309/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=50&Itemid=41) is exclusive distributor of Leica-C lenses (also probably servicer...??!!).

I'm sure there will be independent lens facilities that can and will service the Leica Summilux Primes. ;)

Sanjin, whats the score on a potential M-mount for an EPIC?

Jarred wrote that flange distance is too short for Leica M on EPIC.

I still don't believe that EPIC probably the best and lightest cine digital camera ever can't get Leica M lenses probably the best still prime lenses ever.

Also I'm also still pis*** that I sold my R1MX with Leica M mount option.

What the hell you go and do that for!? :)

I suppose you could get R lenses to work with the canon adaptor, do they compare to M?

I am also surprised I have seen nothing from leica on the Summilux-C, no test, field test or anything...I guess they are not ready for prime time just yet.

Ketch, be ready to ship those things to NYC buddy! ;) That or I will just come shoot at your studio in Italy.

Yeah. I really can't imagine Adeal getting anywhere near them. But then I still can't believe they have the stills stuff here. WTF? There are really good distributors in Australia who would bust a ball to have Leica. I don't get it.

I think you should talk to John Bowring as he may be able to get them for you and provide local support. Other than that you would need to accept shippment to US for any servicing, which would be a pain in the arse.

They look nice on paper and I have every reason to believe that they are optically and mechanically as good as Master Primes with smaller size and weight advantage.

Shane Betts
11-10-2010, 04:04 PM
Thanks Pawel. You're the man I want to hear from. Yes, I imagine Brolga will be in the mix there somewhere. They do look good on paper and, in comparison to MP's and S4's, not crazy expensive. Aside from the Red Dot and the compactness, I love the fact they're all exactly the same size. Very handy.

Have you made any moves to test any at all?

I did, but our friend Michael Bravin didn't let me play with them before he jumped ship to Arri. LOL As I am good Arri customer, he forgot to hand over the promise to the new management at Band-Pro :)

I've seen a nice set of MPs offered here by Jeff Roberts, I think, at a pretty good price. Also Mathew Duclos has a small set in perfect nick for less than the Leicas.

I'd go for a good set of used MPs in a heart beat.

Thanks Pawel.

Things move slowly around here. By the time I get approval for the expenditure used kit is usually gone but if I can make a good case for it, finding the cash for good gear is doable. Plus, the Leica's, assuming they hit the mark, kinda float my boat and will be easier on the back. Everything seems to be 12 seconds into the future at the moment. Maybe by the time Epic ships ...

I think as the Master Prime 2's get closer we will see a lot of Master Primes coming up for sale. It seems like some rental houses are getting rid of them.

I was told I would get some Leica's to play with this month, I'm getting 2 of the first sets. It's been confirmed, the Leica's will cover the Epic 5k.

MP 2's? They have just released 12mm and 14mm and 150mm MP were released just year and a half ago, why would they want to release a new line?

I'd be really pleased if you post your conclusions once you've tried them out - although you're obviously enamoured enough to shell out for two sets!

Matthew,

I'm sure you'll get it especially if you make request to Leica right now.

That means spending a bit of time in Wetzlar, Germany to get certification.

Because you are in LA and you should probably know who is your best contact (Otto Nemenz (http://www.ottonemenz.com/)).

What the hell you go and do that for!? :)

I suppose you could get R lenses to work with the canon adaptor, do they compare to M?

Haskell,

I did a lot of test with M also R glass on my R1.

In general M glass is optically better because of their design especially with the newest aspherical series that have more control on all types of lens aberrations.

But also R glass is more attractive for cine work because the most of these lenses have much longer focus throw than M.

Jonny,

MP V2 is still just a rumor.

Because you are also in LA then probably get your hands on the first Leica-C samples when Otto Nemenz (http://www.ottonemenz.com/) have them in the house for rental.

DAMN. I would love to make this and put my hands on the new Leicas.
But I will be out of the country. Hopefully you guys hold another one
in the Spring at some point when the lenses start to get delivered.

Hmmmmmm ... I wonder which lens set -- if ordered now -- would
be delivered first, the Cooke 5i's or the Leica C's ....
