View Full Version : Digital Cinema AND Digital Photography?

Just a simple question:

Redcine is already capable to export a single frame (or a selection of frames) as a single Raw digital image format (such as Adobe .dng files)?

If not, is that possible with a reasonable effort, guys?

Thinking about an "ideal" workflow for both the imaging worlds...

Imagine the possibilities.

Yes, I'm salivating over that possibility as well. Imagine stock footage and stock photography from the same shot!

I recall Graeme in some thread from DxvUser stating that this was possible (the single frame, maybe not the RAW). I'll have to go digging.

Exporting one single frame (choosing one of the many formats available) is already possible (just make a .tiff .dpx .psd sequence, for example).
And this is great...

I'm asking about exporting a single "Raw" frame.
Just to manage these pictures with the same workflow that we used with our Digital Still Cameras.
And this will be iper-great...

Guys, for all of you that are not already "familiar" with the "Raw World"
and for a better understanding of this Revolution,
this is an a "must read":

I do not know dng files, but for the moment, I think you can only export a single frame (or sequence) in the raw format from RED (uncompressed/redcode), which I do not think will open with the raw plugin of CS2 or CS3.

But Graeme or Stuart could tell us more.

I'm sure this would be something that can be done. Basically you are asking to export single frames while they are still in RAW format, so you will have digital stills at full-frame DLSR RAW quality, and all the post-pro benefits that come with that.

4K RAW stills definitely will have the quality for posters and any promotional images you need, really!

I'm currently using aperture from apple. It is such a great program and you have not only a great RAW correction but also a perfect picture storage tool. Great if the recode software has similar possibilities.

Graeme, sorry, nothing to say about?

Another thread that wandered onto this topic focused (sic) on motion blur. Assuming an effective 180° shutter @24fps the exposure time is only 1/48th of a second. If you're on sticks and the subject is not moving no worries, otherwise you'll need the motion blur to be a desired thematic element.

I wonder if we will have to do the initial tweak (one light) of RAW stills right in RedCine instead of Photoshop due to the de-bayering step?

<so you will have digital stills at full-frame DLSR RAW quality>

Not to pick nits, but full-frame DSLR is 24x36mm, and RED(approximately super35) is 24.4x13.7mm.So, not the same as full-frame DSLRs, which I take to mean full stills 35mm sized sensor. If I'm misunderstanding your phrasing, I completely apologize for the correction. The RED will certaily be the resolution and quality of pro DSLRs, but the field of view and depth of field will be similar to the nikons or smaller sensored canons, as opposed to the 2 full frame canons.

Right, my canons 5d and Mark II do there jobs full frame and I'm shure, Jim's idea to build the RED started by using his beloved canons: When a canon CMOS can store up to 4 full sized RAW picture per second, there must be a way to use this technology for shooting 24 or more picture per second for a digital film camera, I supose were his thoughts.
