View Full Version : OFFHOLLYWOOD'S first Red Feature Film & more!

Okay, I promised to post some goodies so here it goes -

I'm going to post some pics and info on three recent Offhollywood Red shoots first - and then post link to 4K tiff's & h264 video from those shoots.

This past Monday - we made a small contribution to RED HISTORY.

On 10/15/2007 at 9:20am - picture was up on the first feature film to be shot in 4K on a Red camera in New York.

(This is also the first feature film in the world to be shot in 4K with a Red camera directed by a woman. We think that's pretty cool!)

THE ASYLUM SEEKERS is a freewheeling, demented, dark comedy pitched as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory meets The Shining - very much a Tim Burton meets David Lynch kinda' thing.

Cipher Productions Presents
in association with Offhollywood Pictures, Kinetic Arts and Crowned Heart Pictures.

THE ASYLUM SEEKERS
Written and Directed by Rania Ajami
Produced by Molly Conners and Alex Twersky
Director of Photography Lyn Moncrief

All of those wires cant be from camera or is it?

Another recent shoot was a camera test by Igor Martinovic, who was excited to see what the camera could do.

Igor shot the film Padre Nuestro which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance 2007.

http://www.igormartinovic.com

Igor wanted to see how the camera handles highlights and shadows, and specifically wanted to see the results printed back to 35mm film.

The tease I posted called "Candles in Manhattan" was from this shoot - which Igor lit with only a bunch of candles, a mirror tile and one practical.

The third recent project we want to highlight is a short film called SUSPICION (previous working title Fascination Street).

A neo-noir thriller directed by Brendan McCall, this short film was shot by Director of Photography Bryan Pryzpek in three nights - mostly night exteriors.

Before he started shooting, Brian has been known in New York for years as a top gaffer.

He shot Suspicion almost entirely with only three lights.

Brian is awesome and we hope to be doing a feature with him shortly.

Offhollywood Pictures presents
SUSPICION
Directed by Brendan McCall
Produced by Andrew Kletjian and Lawrence Elmer Fuhrmann Jr.

Okay here's the link -

there are 4K tiffs WITHOUT correction/grades that you can grade yourself and post back to this thread -

there are also H264 clips - these clips can NOT be liked outside this forum without written permission from Offhollywood - you CAN link to this thread on this forum.

There is a bit of banding from the web encode which in the Igor_2k clip - next week Pliny is back in the office and I will see if he can find better encode settings and I'll replace the clip -

The H264's were "one click" exports out of Scratch.

Enjoy and please mirror - a bunch of REDUSERs offered bandwidth - I just didn't have time to upload other than to this site - (huge "shout out" to newly married Carl-August Nilsson in Sweden!!!)

this is a question that I have- what's being done regarding the editing?

Feature is cutting Final Cut Pro.
Short is cutting Avid.
Igor's camera test was cut right in Scratch.
LTO3 for archive.

We can't get into any specifics on workflow now, so please don't ask.

We are testing stuff for several companies - and on the feature film alone we have NDA's with four separate hardware/software companies - and by the time we are done I am sure there will be one or two more.

We are playing hard in the sandbox - lot's of fun - lot's of work -

What I CAN say is -
it WORKS now -
it's only gonna' get BETTER -
you don't have to worry about workflow - relax -
it's coming ... and it's all good.

I, for one, appreciate the images and the editing of the image because I am not a techie by background. I believe what I see, and that last image just sold me on this camera's ability to produce really incredible images. All of it has been good, but the last one is to me at least, is better. Oh- and thank you for posting film projects.

Hey red-folk. I've been the tech on set with this baby, and it's been really pretty amazing to look at 4k on my laptop... Only one picture of me staring at histograms and checking footage and wrangling playback seems to have made it in, but pictures of looking at a screen aren't don't really make good copy.

I think all I can say without Mark killing me, is that it works. The workflow is there. There are a few small bumps, and the thing is that they loom a lot larger because this production is a full-speed New York indie. However, these small bumps, are feel so much easier to deal with than comparable film problems, and the ability of playback is huge.

You guys gotta understand, this is a production where we're moving so fast that the minute spent rebooting the camera on battery changes is one of the hard barriers we're hitting. It's a minute and a half every two hours, and we feel it, time is such a premium on indie productions like these.

They've been dubbed "Red-Alerts!" by the crew, because of the bright red text that some times show up on the monitor when the battery is critically low.

The glory of HD-Monitoring is something that the Gaffers, Make-up, Costume, etc... is *really* paying off, and it's something that usually isn't available on indie features like this.

I still can't believe this thing is real, and now, I'm starting to hit the things that I wish were perfected, and the snags of the 1.0 release. But to be honest, HD cameras are 10 to 20 times more difficult and pain in the ass to shoot with, and honestly, the varicam and the f900 simply can't hold up to these shooting situations, where every second counts.

The red on the other hand? it holds. It's pretty damn solid for a freaking 4k camera.

And I have no Idea how the hell red-code scrunches 4k that small visually losslessly.

Thanks for the inside view on the Red set! good to read.

I wonder if it would be possible to rig something that would charge the battery while it is still running the camera, to avoid the bootup stage. You could use it whenever the camera doesn't have to be mobile, you'd just plug the charge cord in and run up the battery charge for however long you have. ...I think this is something Red would have to design, though, I wouldn't want to damage the camera's power inputs by overvoltage.

saw these clips- film-out at the event tonight in NY with offhollywood and it looked like a regular movie. which is a compliment. The screen was big though and I guess I should've sat farther back- it did seem a bit blurry to me.

That boxing clip looked amazing. It didn't look all grainy though like the image above. I didn't notice any grain.

IMHO, it was just a film version of the RED. I think we can all learn something new from that - that one can go film out if you want, but I wouldn't want my RED movie to be shown on film. a DLP or 4K projector would suit better.

then again, whatever, right?

Álex Montoya
10-24-2007, 11:41 PM
The grain is art of the color correction I did.

Anyway, keep in mind that the boxer sequence was filmed in 2K windowed, which has an effective resolution which is noticeably lower than regular 35mm.

That is true, but more crispy than film if shown digital projected.

If you show a filmout on the cinema from a 2k film(digitalized than back out to film), than it will look a bit soft on most cinemas. IMO a digital projecteded 2k footage woulde look more crispy than the film even if the native resolution is from a lower res. Most cinemas (analog) dont go above 1000 lines res. Of course if you show a digital presentation of a 35mm film than its a different story i guess.

I was there last night, as well. They saved Mark for last -- good marketing for the user group, if you ask me :)
Mark warned everyone that he simply didn't have the time to put all the footage in there that he would have liked, and that the LUT for the filmout hadn't been finessed either.
Once the film started, the first thing that struck me was -- no audio. Just the clackity-clack of a projector. In a humorous sense, it really emphasized all the negatives of using film to present an image.
Without the audio, there was nothing to draw me into the story. So now I'm remarking to myself how bad the gate weave is, and how annoying the projector-noise is, in the background. Uggh. If we shouldn't mix audio in that environment, why should we be forced to present a film in that environment?
But, back to the film -- it was fun looking for the tiniest details on such a huge screen, and finding them represented quite well. The fine hair on an actress' arm showed up with the same clarity as what we've seen on our computer monitors. No blurring from being uprezzed -- no sense that we were watching an "upgraded" image. Very clean. And the shots of the car at night were exquisite -- the streaking, reflecting lights in the black hood looked unbelievably clean.
But the color -- well, Mark warned us. In the process of being taken back to film, it seemed the saturation had dropped quite a bit, and so had the contrast. It looked very sharp, very clean, very large . . . and a little like video.
It just goes to show that movies are about workflow, and a break in the chain - anywhere - hurts the final results. Everyone knows this intellectually, but seeing it on the big screen was like a little kick to the gut. Note: no shortcuts for a final print -- could ruin everything.

Having met Mark twice, now, I can only say his honesty and enthusiasm is nothing short of contageous. He's the scientist over here, swaying the masses to take a fresh look at an old problem -- with the evidence to prove Red's approach. He's tireless, well-spoken, and generous. No doubt Off Hollywood will be guiding many Red projects through the straits of Production and Post.
Hats off to you guys.

Thank you, Mark, for sharing your experiences.

Hah! that's how I got suckered in! Now, while you guys were all ooing and aaahing over footage, and being charmed by Mark, we were shooting a late night deep in the woods of Staten Island in the cold.

It's very surprising how this "particle splitter" as our AD puts it... (He's still very wary) is holding out. We are definately putting it through it's paces and the hardware is holding up.

I’m noticing that you are using Anton Bauer Battery packs. Did you have to modify anything to make them work? How long do they last compared to the RED packs?
Thanks:

That's too bad, because this crew is pretty bad ass...

As far as the AB batts, we're mainly sticking to red-bricks. Those are back-ups, because again, we are moving so fast. And we're using them less and less, as we're finding the battery life on the red-bricks to be pretty solid.

My question to you guys out there, is it surprising to you how rarely you're getting asked what you're shooting on? It's strange but I've had a lot of people assume we were shooting film... (at least until the head over to video village) Have any of you had the same experience?

indie - 100% financed by private equity - no distribution (will not screen film until 100% complete and will most likely go the festival route) - it's VERY unusual - very clever script - IMHO director has a very BRIGHT future - she's impressing me - and that's not exactly easy -

Mark,

Well - IMHO - if you are doing feature work - 2075 is the move - we shoot a lot of "run and gun" stuff with lighter rig on a video 20 - but other than locked off establishing shots or maybe cut always - that's way too light -

I prefer 2060 - and LOVE the 2075 but it's a beast to run around with - if you own a 2030HDS already - you can use it for some stuff - but if you are thinking of buying - 2075 (or 2060) is the move - we have NOT purchased yet - we are renting - will have to consider leasing soon, but I just can't swallow the price (of fluid heads today) - hoping that Jim just BUYS O'CONNOR and changes the price point (one can dream, right ...?)

Let us know

well .. that was just a quick update. Obviously we won't screen a rough-cut for the public. I think this film will make a festival debut - Director has agreed to let us put the trailer up here as soon as it's ready and give RED a 4K version (of the trailer) to use if they would like to - that being said - they haven't cut the trailer yet.

this is copy from press release -

Writer and Director, Rania Ajami (Filmmaker Magazine
"25 New Faces of Indie Film 2004), has just completed
her first narrative feature, "Asylum Seekers", a dark
comedy about six people trying to enter an
asylum to escape the madness of the outside world.

Produced in association with Offhollywood Pictures, the
film was lensed entirely with 4K Red digital cinema cameras.

Asylum Seekers is a freewheeling, demented, dark
comedy about the modern world, in which six men and
women, fed up with the abuse they suffer in their
"normal" lives, seek "asylum" as inmates of a mental
institution. They've all heard about a place up on the
hill with an exclusive treatment program; now each of
them is out to show just how mad they can be when
electro-shock treatment and a comfy bed with a doting
nurse has become the perfect alternative to life on
the outside. But the asylum has its own unexpected
agenda; for a start, due to a massive influx of
patients, there is only one bed left. The six are
forced to compete against each other in a mad dash
adventure reminiscent of Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory meets Brazil and The Shining, making it clear
this asylum is no ordinary institution.

Ajami's next project is "My Eyes through Carnage", a
noir/thriller/road movie, about two women embroiled in
a search for a missing girl in a desert country. This
will be the first narrative feature to be shot in
Libya since the sixties and follows Ajami's feature
documentary on Qaddafi's female bodyguards - "Shadows of
A Leader", which has been sold internationally.

Hey Mark,

Can you quickly list how many services and for what duration/what level/what quality, etc Offhollywood provided for this film? I assume they'll be grading in your Scratch suite. Are you providing all the technical aspects from end to end? My mouth still waters at that figure you had provided once of full DI work for 10 days and film out for about 80K, are those projections still holding?

Just found out that the 1st AD on that is on this production as well, Toe to Toe

Toe to Toe is the third "all RED" feature that Offhollywood is supporting with Red cameras and post services.

Simultaneously, our fourth feature on RED, Mystery Team, is shooting in NH.

Both Aslyum Seekers (finshed 11 days of Scratch color grading just last week) and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead
(begins color grading in two weeks) are trying for world premiers at the 2008 Toronto Film Festival - http://www.tiff08.ca/default.aspx

I would expect Toe To Toe and Mystery Team to both make the 2009 Sundance submission deadline.
