That is kind of cool. So very Japanese...

It look like rear projection on glass (with the projection surface film on it). Very effective.

Not a real hologram, but interesting. Reminds me of Al Pacino's Simone, but not as cool.

Oddly, I was just in the studio last night working on a gig where we faked a hologram by sending a video feed from San Jose to a live stage in Hungary. The image was projected on an expensive sheet of material that looked like strip of Hampshire gel.

Well, apparently not that cool...

But I hadn't seen it before so thought it was interesting. Guess I've been underwater too long :)

Justin: my iPad wouldn't load the video for some reason. I would be curious how the effect is done and whether it could be easily projected in the aisle of a trade show.

It is interesting. Cool tech Michael and thanks for sharing the link.

Sorry if it sounded like it was directed to you, it wasn't. I wouldn't mind being more underwater. :)

Yeah, I'd like to know how that's done as well. In the Gorillaz video (the one your ipad couldn't load), Madonna walks in front of and behind one of the figures. Perhaps I'll have to dig up my loose ties to Hewlett and find some info...

While "Musion 3D" is a cool as hell effect without a doubt, it is NOT holographic nor is it 3D and they should not be allowed to bill it as such. Holography is a very specific technology and art form, yet people use it to describe cool optical trick from Pepper's Ghost to parallax barrier or lenticular autostereo displays. A hologram actually records the positions of photons of light, hence their ability to reproduce 3D images. Holograms are the only "real" 3D we see other than our normal vision. Stereoscopic 3D movies are merely an illusion of 3D created by the two carefully recorded and presented independent 2D views our brains interpret as 3D. The Madonna walking in front of and then behind Gorillaz cartoon bassist Murdoc was achieved far more simply than you might imagine. The first part of Madonna's performance was also virtual. After the Madonna / Gorillaz projections left, the real Madonna took the stage. Excellent illusion, impeccable staging, technically perfect, but not a hologram and not 3D.
