Are you talking about these guys?
http://www.vocas.com/
Are you asking if they are going to make a mattebox, or saying they will make one?

I have Vocas Matte Box which I bought last spring near Amsterdam at Vocas buildings in Hilversum. Hope it will work with the RED ONE.

How does it compare to a Chrossziel?

Vocas matte boxes quality and durability is like VW. Chrosziel is something like Audi or Porsche in the matte box field. More expensive and top quality German product.

Hi Sanjin
I think the only issue you might find is because it is 4x4, when you are using wider lenses in the 2k or 4k format it may vignette a bit. Though I am sure it will be fine most of the time. What has your experience been using it with the Redrock? have you tried it with some of the wider Nikon lenses, 20mm or 14mm?

Redrock is a mixed pot.
PROS:
It is a cheaper than other two Geman adapters like P+S and MovieTUBE. You can attach a wide range of 35mm still and cine lenses. When it is in a right set up can achieve descent results almost like with an old 16mm film but not in quality like S16mm film. Very good for skills in 35mm DOF cinematography. Ideal for 720p but not good enough in 1080p. Usable for a short film production, music spots, documentaries, experimental and art cinema. In a big production can be used only like special effect or something like "exotic" or vintage shooting. But it is all up to concept and aestetic of the project and production at the end you could achieve very good film like result.
CONS:
Very difficult to set up, no written user manual, only via Redrock users online forum. Lost in light between 1-2 stops because of spinning glass (also issue with P+S). Achromatic glass should be in a better quality. Visible grain from the spinning glass that should at its best in a footage "to play" something like a film grain on full frame HD1080p resolution. Not usable resolution for green/blue screen keying.

I don't know, but the last 35mm I shot I used 4x4 filters (like many others I worked on) and they worked great as wide as 18mm (My widest on occasion)...

It will depend on how many filters you are using, the design of the mattebox, the diameter of the front element and the FOV of the lens. So there may be many occasions when 4x4 does just fine but I think it is likely to be restrictive for RedOne usage.
Cinema Technic have some useful format recommendations:

Ok, good to know!
Maybe 4x4 isn't guaranteed to work all the time.

Sanjin: I like your taped lens ;)
"Taped lens" is actually a way to fix focus and zoom rings on FX1 when you once get M2 to work (or on any other 1/3" camcorder that can be attached to the Redrock M2 35mm adapter). For the start to get an idea is the best to read about "a detailed explanation of depth of field (DOF), Circle of Confusion, and Bokeh" at "Creating the Film Look" y Mark Brindle, an M2 owner.

I know, it's just a funny look to see some pretty expensive gear with tape on it
Sanjin Jukic
02-10-2007, 08:19 AM
Hmm, I would not say "pretty expensive". For example FX1 is the cheapest of "bigger" HDV cameras, M2 is the cheapest 35mm DOF adapter that can attach many lens mounts, Vocas Matte Box is the cheapest "quality" matte box, Vinten Pro Touch 5 is the cheapest "descent" DV tripod etc...everything is very very low budget...maybe to put it together cost a lot anyway...I mean little by little and than you get a high price...this I see could be a place for your notion about "some pretty expensive gear with tape on it".

I paid for Vocas DV Mattebox MKII (E-2) Kit for FX1 + 2 French Flags + 2 side flags + 2 little rod extensions exactly € 1707,65 that includes Dutch 19% taxes.

Hi,
I am from Vocas.
The mattebox shown in this thread is a mattebox from our MB3XX series.
These matteboxes are made for 4x4 filters.
Asspecially for the red camera we have developped a bigger panavision size mattebox. The MB450.
This mattebox has all the features of a production production mattebox and more, up to 5 rotateble and tiltable filters and a 19mm swing away bracket.
We have a demo movie online:

most all standard prime lenses (16mm to 135mm) are fine with 4X4 filters...unless of course you start stacking or rotating them. Most of my older filters are 4X4 and I use them all the time.

We just picked up a Vocas MB-450 (and an Arri matte box). Actually looks a bit more hardy than the Chrosziel. We'll be testing it out today, give you some feedback.

I own a Vocas Follow Focus, and I'm very pleased with the quality. Much more smart and solid build than the Chrosziel matte box I've rented. The Vocas MB-450 looks like it might be a great matte box, wish I could try it out somewhere.

I would appreciate some feedback Noah. That Matte box seems pretty good as far as features, but is it rugged/sturdy enough? How much did it cost, if you don't mind my asking?

I have a Vocas MB250 with 15mm rod support, which is a 4x4 filter size and I have been very happy with it. It is well engineered but have decided to sell it because I wasn't sure it would be large enough format for the Red. Shame really because the larger glass is more expensive.
I also have the Vocas FF; that is a very nice unit; no backlash at all on the gearbox. I have decided to keep it for now and try it out when I get delivery of my Red. It's such a nice unit; very well engineered.
Vocas make a larger format matte box, MB450 which has a swing-away; I was seriously considering buying it for my Red until I found out Jay was trying to get a Arri discount deal on a group purchase of their matte box.
All in all I like the build quality of the Vocas kit and I have been extremely happy with the matte box and FF.

Played with the MB-450 at Cinegear. Seemed excellent:
1. lightweight and strong (is it molded carbon fibre?)
2. has nice tiltable front frame to reduce filter reflections
3. cute eyebrows too!
The only problem with it is that it's similar in price to the Arri MB-20 Mk.II and doesn't support 5x6 filters (it does 5.65x5.65 though).
Here are my pics...

The Vocas MB450 swing away box was shown at NAB. It is very nice but also very expensive, as were the Petroff boxes...also very nice. They are at least in the same price range as the Arri boxes. I really liked the tilt tray in front on the Vocas. It's a nice feature. I have one of their older 4X4 model clip ons I use for EFP.

We just added two Vocas Matte Boxes to our inventory and sent them out on a feature today with Red One cameras. I'll get more feedback over the course of the shoot I'm sure, but they were the MB-450s with two rotating 4x5.650 / 5.5x5.5 stages, one stationary 4x5.650 and a 138mm stage.... Also w/ 19mm swing away adjustable support and a variety of step-down donuts.
Good deal. Slightly less than Chrosziel. At least 35-40% less than Arri. Seems like a deal. Some features Arri's MB-20 doesn't have, though - I haven't fully tested it. As a rental company, the main downside is it doesn't have the name brand people want to see.

Yeah..
It's a big part of the system and I hate to say it, but for those of us working in front of a lot of people, the ARRI on that Mattebox goes a ways to calming people down.
Stupid? Perhaps, but this is one area where I cannot take chances

We had a great shoot with the Vocas MB450. Definitely highly recommended. And yes it looks absolutely bad ass on the camera.

Personally I never had a client asking me what brand of the mattebox I am using.
It's seams the MB450 may be a good pair to the Red Camera.
Noah, do you have any other comments about it?
Thanks

the ARRI on that Mattebox goes a ways to calming people down.
I think I'll stencil ARRI onto a RedRock and see how many people figure it out. Luckily, not too many people out here can tell Arri from Nikon. Hmm... maybe I should stencil Nikon or Canon on instead.
Reminds of threads where people were worrying if RED would look professional enough for actors to take seriously.

Just to clarify, I wouldn't worry about actors thinking anything about the Matte Box. It looks great. I just have customers request Arri, specifically. And, to respond saying "How bout Vocas?" - Some DP's/AC's won't accept that :)
If its for your own package - I do recommend it highly.

Hey guys,
I have to say that I do love the ARRI MB-20 II, but as for sure I will go creasy on the ARRIHEAD II purchase for one of my RED's, I stand to believe the mattebox system is over kill for at the price point, granted it is of great build and fully accessoriesable (is this a word, hope you get what I mean), but the VOCAS that Bruce is showing above (we look at this together when we meet at Cinegear) it is just as good built, the prices were in the proximitie of that of ARRI's, just that ARRI's gets much expensive as you can add on so much, but at the end I suggest strongly ( after seeen Brian from REDROCK M2 ) what the REDROCK is about to put in to the market for just a fantastic price ( about $500 to start the unit ) so first take a good look at this MATTEBOX with swing away, then you can make a much better inform decision.
Ciao,

We use Chrosziel for years now and are pretty satisfied. I think Arri is better, but way too expensive, so Chrosziel would always be my recommendation. Ads usual, they would come up with a special mattebox for the Red soon.

Well the Vocas has the beautiful red knobs and stuff, while Redrock seems to be going for blue ... which makes the $2500 price difference easier to justify. :)

Hi Guys ! Just wondering if the Vocas DV Matte Box kit B3 will work with the RED One or Scarlett. I am selling some of my HVX stuff as I am upgrading my equipment (Some good bargains for European users, see items for sale)
If the Vocas will fit either I may hold on to it.
