Good to see a finished dutch project on the Red! Nice work.

I saw the clip when I was over at Camalot (the #44 rental company).
I was wondering then if you had used the quicktime wrapper or the full DPX or TIFF debayering.
The wrapper tends to give the pic a look like a nearest-neighbour scale in photoshop does. Very sharp but with blocky edges. It is a preview codec, as far as I know.
I'm curious what the video would look like when using the tiff or dpx rendering for final output. My guess is this will improve your image quality and lower the noise floor (especially when exporting to 2K)
I also think lighting for iso 500 will give you even better highlight handling than iso 320, and the noise is still way low, certainly when your final output will be tiff or dpx downscaled to SD video.

Floris is absolutly right, about the ASA at least.

He Floris thanks,

I've used the QT wrapper. I'm not sure if the QT is a preview codec. the 0,5 QT is, but the 1K and 2K isn't i thought. What i did is edit the music video on 1K pro res and rebuilt the clip with just the reference files of the 2K QT's. So FCP will use the original files...but uses the QT's to understand them. QT just has metadate in it.

My lighting was 2/3 of a stop over to 320. So this will be around 500. The video you saw had a compression over it. The 2K file was in pro res QT this is also some loss to the original. The blocky edges appear cause of this codec and probably because they enhance it.

We're about to rebuilt the the clip at 4K Tiff and 4K DPX this week. I also had contact with Mark Dols who wants to grade it at Cinemeta and shoot it to film.

We're testing today some more stuff.

To be continued....let's keep the lines open...

cheers

Keep us informed: I saw the 1920 version of the video and I think it looks very, very nice.

I think the QT wrapper should not be used on final versions.

Rob Lohman said about this:
The current quality of the QuickTime codec is very good, but not extreme high-quality yet.
The reason for this is that it's not doing a full 4K debayer and then downsampling that to whatever resolution you're looking at.

Maybe this changed in the latest version of Red Alert, but I haven't heard about it yet.

One of the best footage from RED, with great artistic creativity! Great job...!!!

Nice work Martijn

Also check out: Rocketeers post of the first NZ music video. It's a great young band also by the way, good indie rock.

To come on Red: a music clip by Solomon, winners of NZ Smokefree Rockquest 2007.
(the fact they are my son's band has absolutely nothing to do with this plug!)

How large is the file?
I'm on a limited internet connection here...
So if someone has time and wants to do it, it would be nice to get a file like Shawn mostly posts them: pretty small (5-75 MB for instance).
Best regards,

Cool video. Sortof Maroon 5 - ish.

I load and sync a lot of 35mm footage from decent budget music videos for an editor friend. We're always bitching and moaning over how rough the neg has been treated. Dirt and Globs everywhere. Many times he demands a neg wash and re-transfer and sometimes it comes back almost as bad.

Once the artist, manager, lable, artists' dog walker, record exec's 9 year old and a homeless person walking by the studio all approve the cut, then it's time for the Online to D-Beta, with a borrowed deck that weighs as much a s a truck. Then rebuild any "fixes" that don't work at the higher res. Only to find out that one of the band member's girlfriends was'nt consulted. Back to another Online.

Hopefully the Offline / Online with Red will be a touch easier. oh, and when sound is implemented, we can have something to find synce with. Syncing is much harder than people realize, especially when the shooter wants to grab some inserts of CUs and you have no idea what part of the song the bass player is playing.

This Red footage looks so clean, and I'm noticing that more and more footage has less noise in the shadows. People are getting a handle on RedAlert?

just rambling, but this vid looks very cool.

Sorry.. I will be honest here. Good showcase for what RED is capable of doing but a really boring video.
