Found a 32 GB 300x CF Card.
It has read/write transfer rate up to 45.0MB/sec. That seems to be fast enough.

Would be perfect if working...

looks like orders start at 100 piece minimum. maybe we can organize a large purchase together and buy a few hundred together. at those quantities, i would be willing to pay around $500 for one 32gb card.

Sounds sweet, are they available, where and for how much ? Who's got a Red and is willing to test ?
Cheers,
Damien
PS Just went to there web site and sent an inquiry about availability and pricing. I will post any info I get when I do.

I think I would wait for RED's stamp of approval as to speed. They made the disclaimer that full 100% data recovery was not guaranteed, or something.
Also, when it says rates up to 45 MB/sec and 4 sizes of cards are listed, does that mean that all four sizes will operate at that speed (which was determined during their internal testing of the cards) or that only the 4 GB/sec one will? Just too early to jump, IMO.
Not saying it won't work, just wanting more proof.

How about asking redteam? Jim, Rob, Graeme - did you hear about these cards? Are you going to test them?
I think most of redusers are really interested of getting 32 GB CF-cards.
And BTW - if not 32, what´s with 16? When will they be available? I really need them as soon as possible for upcoming german featurefilm starting in early novemberdays...

i don't think any of the X300's Elites are available ..
when i try to add any of the 4/8/16/32gig elites to shopping basket - it goes to the 160X CF card - the 160X does go into basket ...

I would be very careful until we can test several of them. We have found that most CF cards do NOT write at a constant speed as advertised.
We'll try to get some and test, but we have been disappointed many times before with CF cards that had good specs. And dropped frames is not a good thing.

Great news!
This is why Red is so great: If they test out, they'll order in bulk, brand them, and they'll be the best deal in town.
We have an "organized large purchase power group"... It's called "Red"

don't count on finding a deal better than what you are getting from red, i get an automatic discount at samys of 10-25% off (depending on the margins) and the lexar 8 gb cards are still more expensive from samys than from red. in my humble opinion they are not trying to make money off the peripherals (unlike most companies) the camera is not the loss leader, like printers.
they are interested in starting a revolution, not getting rich, they already all drive expensive sports cars, they don't need our extra cash. again in my humble opinion based on two months of spending time with and talking with most of the 20+ involved with the creation of this revolutionary machine.

Hello Jim,
Is it realistic to think 16 gig cards for RED will be here before years end? Or is it a wait and see?

I only really want to buy RED CF cards and I'm sure that they will always be looking to have the biggest, fastest and most reliable in the store.
I think capturing to CF is the cameras 3rd biggest selling point, after 35mm and 4K..

16GB CF cards at 45MB per second rates are just not possible with the current controller technology. Sandisk, Delkin, and a few others have managed to squeeze just a little bit more from the cards in terms of speed (Sandisk Ducati Extreme for example) but with capacity, you have to trade speed for stability due to the denser flash memory chips having lower throughput with CF controllers otherwise you get corrupted data. If this relatively unknown Microdia company has come up with their own remarkable memory controller design (it's certainly possible given the new products they have been showing off at expos and such) then there is a chance the card is a valid product though there is no guarantee that such a controller will work well with the more advanced electronics. Lexar had a lot of problems with it's UDMA cards when they were first released and only now are they really addressing the issues. Many smaller companies like Ridata are also throwing out cards at dirt cheap prices with advertised speed rates that are actually the read speed and not the write speed so if anyone is going with the "it looks like a good deal" path, do your research before you buy anything.

Hi,
I would certainly want Red to evaluate and sign off on any CF cards I would consider using. And I would probably always buy from Red hoping that they would have the highest standards. Right now it seems like 16 and eventually 32 GB sized cards for 4K may be at least a few months away.
But for many of us who like the CF option and may shoot 2K for docs, interviews, etc., I'm wondering if Red could look at these or some other larger capacity cards for the lower data rates of shooting 2K/24 or possibly 2K/30. It would be great to know you had 20, 30 or even more minutes "per load."
Again, I'd rather have them tested, certified and sold through Red, just so I could shoot with confidence.
Would anyone else be interested in this? Are there cards that might handle this already out there?

There are high capacity industrial CF cards but they are much slower than their consumer and professional counterparts and can only be ordered directly from the manufacturer for the most part. As I said earlier, there is a tradeoff with the high density chips and the physical size of CF really is it's biggest problem because you can squeeze much faster speeds from using low-density chips. That's why you get faster write rates with low-capacity high speed cards than the higher-capacity ones. SSD drives are the way to go with a camera like RED if you want portability and speed but the price is a big issue as SSDs are not mass manufactured yet. If the RED had something like an eSata port, it could certainly help with the problem.

The Microdia 16GB & 32GB spec at 24MB/sec. write speeds... that is not fast enough.

In case the CF standard is just too slow for higher capacities:
Why not using the new ExpressCard™/34 modules? Looks like those are much faster and 16 GB should be available within weeks, 32 GB in the pipeline. Not only from Sony, Sandisk is part of the partnership, too. Just in case RED doesn't want to offer/sell Sony stuff.
In the RED shop I still see the RED FLASH (EX34) Module for $500.00. The EX34 standard would be even better: The cards fit directly into any MacBook Pro's EX34 slot, no external writer/reader needed.
Below the Sony specs...
Sony launches ultra fast memory card for professional camcorders
SxS™ PRO offers industry's fastest data-transfer speed
New milestones & new products
Sony announced the launch of its new SxS PRO™ memory cards for professional camcorders. The 8GB SBP-8 and 16GB SBP-16 cards feature industry-leading data transfer speed technology compliant with the ExpressCard™ standard. Sony will adopt the ultra fast SxS PRO™” memory card in its “XDCAM EX™ series professional camcorders, to be launched at the same time.
SxS PRO™ is based on the SxS™ memory card specification*, developed for high speed data transfer. The new memory card improves workflow efficiency by reducing transfer times for large data files such as high-definition video, enabling rapid transfer speed of 800 Mbps**. Its compact size contributes to the design of much lighter and smaller camcorders while excellent reliability gives users more opportunity to shoot footage in the harshest of conditions.
Key Benefits
Industry's fastest data transfer speed at 800 Mbps.
SxS PRO™ complies with the ExpressCard™ industry standard, adopted by PC manufacturers to replace the legacy PC Card™ format. It’s the first ever PCI Express™ solid-state storage media and features about twice as fast data transfer speeds as legacy PC Card interfaces. By connecting directly to computer systems through a high-speed PCI-Express™ bus and with optimized technology protocols for controlling communication between hardware and card, SxS PRO™ achieves rapid data transfer rates of 800 Mbps. This reduces the duration of non-linear video editing, even when handling large high-definition video files.
Compact Size
Using ExpressCard™/34 modules, SxS PRO™ is half the size of a standard PC Card at just 34mm in width, 5mm in height and 75mm in length. This enables the design of professional camcorders to be far smaller and lighter, without compromising high storage capacity. Despite its compact size, the 16GB SxS PRO™ card can record approximately one hour of video with Sony XDCAM EX camcorders.
High Reliability for professional users
With its high reliability and durability, SxS PRO™ offers professional camcorder users even more opportunity to shoot in tough conditions or environments.
The 8GB SBP-8 will be priced around €400 and the 16GB SBP-16 around €700. Both models will be available in November 2007***.
