Red #83 arrived friday, I have attached a couple of stills from footage I shot this weekend in the backyard. As soon as I get up to speed I'll post some real footage.

The camera is amazing, it has exceeded my expectations. I'll post a full review of the camera as soon as I can

Holy crap thats some clean looking footage man!

I have to ask a question though, the image on the right, is that a Photo-shopped lens flare? It looks too good to be true! Love the natural light too

Greg M
10-22-2007, 08:32 PM
yes, a friend color corrected these in Photoshop. I am still learning how to extract the best images...its slow going.
The footage was literally shot after taking the camera out of the box, so I will need a bit more time with it.

Great Stuff!

I like the bouquet of the lens in the first picture. I really like the back lighting in the second.

Would love to hear what you think about the RED lenses and the quality they produce.

Working with those raw TIFFs is simply amazing. You can pull and pull in any direction and the image just refuses to break down. That's impressive.

Again digitalfx, great job.

yes, I have 16 ab batteries...why would I want another system?

I couldn't agree with you more. I sure hope they offer an AB version of their mounts. I dislike the Vmount options a lot.

but wait those highlights are blown out!!!! See guys, overexposing to bring the focus to your perfectly exposed subject works great! Everyone seems exited by these images cause digitalfx has taken some risks and let the camera go where he saw fit. These good looking natural images arent hard to come by, but they are if you're more concerned with protecting your digital signal than the actual aesthetic! Congrats dfx, looks like 83 is in good hands.

Are you editing in Photoshop? Pictures always look a bit different to me in photoshop vs. in firefox web browser. Photoshop may be applying some different screen corrections somehow (?) Are you set to sRGB color space?

I have a v-mount to ab plate...it sucks but works.

I am waiting on a wiring diagram so I can hardwire the ab plate directly.

Wow! Thanks for posting that... the dream finally made real.

I'm not the expert on color spaces but I think Photoshop will look different set to Adobe RGB vs. sRGB (web standard).

Here's a LUT I call "Kiddie Magazine", all photoshop. There are a couple of straight lines in the mask to separate foregorund from background, but I just didn't feel like going back to fix it. Also, I did it all at 8 bits to save time and still the image wouldn't "break"....very nice!

It's strange but although i am sure the focus should be in the middle of the girl the shot looks as if it is slightly out of focus... or i am just too tired right now :-)

was there any fill on the kids or all natural?

did you have to turn the overexposure sun protection thingy off?

Greg M
10-24-2007, 10:05 AM
I think the shot speaks for itself. I shot this by myself handheld (30+ lb rig w/ no handles attached) so it was a bit awkward.

No fill, just me and the sun which was setting behind the kids who are in the shadows.

We are seeing a good bit of grain in the 4K footage in the shadow areas as we color correct.

footage shot at 320 ASA, 24fps, 1/48th shutter

Any chance you could post a short clip of the close-up of the young girl's face. Curious about how the camera is capturing the texture and color of her face. Thanks.

David Cubbage
10-24-2007, 04:47 PM
IMO, that clip speaks for itself considering the conditions. The leaves on the branch between the girl and the boy are still definable. The other thing I noticed, which I would expect, was hardly any serious colour fringing around the faces against the bright sunlight; at least viewing on my small PC monitor. Out of interest, what ND's and lens were you using?

I am impressed; taking the camera to extreems speak volumes about the latitude of this amazing sensor, thanks for posting digitalfx.

The lens was a 32mm Ultra Prime, the only filter was a Polarizer.

I will post a new clip in a few minutes...same stuff so dont get too excited.
I do have a close up.

I should have some commercial stuff soon, this was all shot on the first day in my backyard with my kids.

Greg M

here are a few more quick shots...just a simple camera test nothing great:

www.digitalfx.tv/clients/red/dfx/A003_C001_071021_1kh264.mov

32mm and 135mm Ultraprimes. polarizer. no fill, just natural light. again, I took the camera out of th box and went outside.

Thanks for the additional footage! This is very exciting stuff to see. Some of those colors are kind of surprising.
