First the press release stuff...
Client: Koi Restaurants
Prod. Co.: Solid/Base Station
Director: Thom Blackburn
Director of Photography: Evin Grant
Red Ninja: Brook Willard
Red#81 (Sam Druckerman's)

This was the element shoot for a pretty sexy ad for the new Koi resturant going into the new Planet Hollywood hotel on the vegas strip. It will play on the big jumbotron outside the casino, as well as other places around the hotel and casino. This shoot was done mostly at 2K 75FPS using Zeiss T2.1 standard speed 35mm lenses, some elements were shot in 4K 23.98. We used the side rails to mount the camera vertically for about half the shooting so the portrait elements had the most res for compositing. Worked like a charm.
We hope to have a cut to show in a week or so. For now here are some choice QTs and a few of the rig shots.

Damn, scale that 2K down!

For those that can't tell from the pictures, we mounted the camera sideways by putting a base plate [1030s] on two side handles butted up next to each other.

We had both the RED LCD and Evin's 8.5" Panasonic monitor onboard. We used the LCD for navigating menus and checking exposure with the false color meter and the Panasonic for operating. The Panasonic was used for operating because when the RED LCD is enabled, the HD-SDI and HDMI outputs are currently disabled. This will be fixed with a software update for the camera in the future, but for today, operating with the Panasonic on HD-SDI and the client monitor on HDMI did the trick.

Lighting was a 2K Blonde Chimera and a funny 1K Chimera [does that light have a name?] in a sea of black.

The models were... err... talented as usual.

Nah, but those things are groovy.

It was basically a speed ring with a medium screw socket in the middle and a baby receiver.

Holy crap, I dunno, it was a light! I was in camera! I'm too tired for this! :)

Nah, Evin linked to it.

Right on, that's exactly what I was thinking. I have that socket but in their 20" lantern.

It would be really cool if you guys would take two Jarred-sized steps back and snap off a BTS pic of the entire setup to go along with the Red footage!

Hmm... next time I'll try to remember to bring my little point 'n shoot.

This one was pretty easy. There were 4 or 5 20x20 solids and a 12x20 solid making the whole world black around camera and talent. Talent was on a heavy-as-hell spinning platform.

The lighting was buried in a tube of flops and flags to keep it very controlled and directional.

Camera was on Evin's Indie Dolly. We only did one dolly shot - it was basically just an easy way for us to move the camera on axis for the rest of the day.

Great stuff, Evin.

Sorry Shawn, too late for that. It was basically 4 10x20' solids on T-Bones another 12'x on the ground and a medium Chimera w/2K Blond and the small Chimera with the 1K Mogul arranged in a broad vertical strip light and controlled by 4x floppys and flags. We tried grids too but that was too much, the flags worked fine. We exposed most scenes at T2.8 ISO 320 72FPS 180º shutter.

Sanjin, refresh your page the links work now.

Wait a minute... I'm buying the RED to KEEP from having to turn my HVX on its side to get enough resolution for green screen work... now I'll have to rethink my upcoming purchase.

Just kidding.

Well, at least it's easy to do that kind of configuration with the RED cage tinkertoy pieces... you should see my HVX sideways mount, it ain't pretty when shoved into a teleprompter...

I've got Carl Zeiss Arriflex 85mm f2 lens for € 540.00 today.

A geat portrait lens and I could do a similar beauty stuff with RED here in Wien!

Why there is so much noise in the shadows Evin? Because of the QT proxies? Or because the iso setting?

If you see noise in the QTs, it's from the compression. This jpeg is a better representation of how clean the footage is when processed.
