I heard plus 8 reserved 5 but they were bought by panavision so it is unsure what will come of those cameras.

I'll be renting it out, but also with myself.

I'm a thousand kilometers north of Vancouver right now but I hope to be working in Vancouver sometime this year. It is good to know that if (physics forfend) Red #351 breaks, there are at least a few local Reds that I can turn to if I have a hot set and no camera.

Those cameras are going to Burbank, CA.

But Sim Video has ordered 5 with reservation #s around 1010...

Are there any plans for a Vancouver meeting? Perhaps after NAB??

I would think that there is a good chance for finding old Nikkor AI lenses at the camera swap taking place in April... but I can't get down to the lower mainland for that. I just figured I could give a heads up to those who can.

Hey when one of you guys gets your camera I'd be interested in having a look at some shots in our DI suite. Its a lustre driving a projector (unfortunately not a 4k projector, in fact I'm not sure if there any 4k projectors in town) and I'd like to pull and push the image to see how robust it is.:weight_lift:

For those renting out your Reds (body, 18-50mm lens, 320gb pack, battery, evf), what would be your daily rate?

Given the price of Red vs other digital camcorders (specifically shoulder mounted, broadcast 1/2" - 2/3" CCD cameras) would $400 be a reasonable daily rate?

And for those looking to buy a Red for themselves, do you also plan to rent out to help recoup costs? I'm sort of thinking the latter, but how does one go about setting up a rental business?

Clint Johnson

Hi Sean,

Trevor is a few places ahead of me with #182 but if he isn't interested or able, I'd be happy to bring Red #351 in.

Brett,

I see that you're way back at #812 and was wondering if maybe Zoic would like to run a Red through some tests a couple months ahead of your delivery?

I live north of you folks so I wouldn't mind have a few things set up before I drove in to the city.

Hi Desert Rune,

I noted HERE (http://www.clint-johnson.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=95&Itemid=27) on my website a couple weeks back about Silverado Systems and their pricing (they'll have to adjust their availability date). They are planing to have a very complete system out the door for a regular rental rate of $7,500 per week without an operator. The week may be considered Monday through Friday with a separate weekend rate or... hell, these things are all over the place and completely negotiable. But this looks to be in the $1,500 per day range.

My thinking is that $400 per day is a little low, even for a package that is less than what Silverado is offering. My suggestion is that you might want to ask for at least $750 per day for the "body, 18-50mm lens, 320GB pack, battery, evf". That leaves you room to negotiate and they might even say yes to it since it is a reasonable amount of money. And it is always easier to lower your asking price than it is to raise it.

I don't plan on renting out #351. If it is used on anyone elses shoot, it would only go out as a package deal with me along to operate (unless I really trusted them).

If you are looking at doing some renting, be aware that it is very much a relationship business and I would really only advise it if you know a few DoPs, directors and producers who can ok renting from you. Another thing to do is build relationships with the rental houses around Vancouver and let them know that you can help them fill any overbooking that takes place. Right here on RedUser is another good place to start, get to know the other Red users in BC and let them know that if their camera goes down or they need a camera B or second unit camera... you're available at the special day rate of $400 (dude, you put that number out there <g>).

All very good points for pondering, Clint.

I am wondering if the rate of $7,500 for a week rental is too excessive? That's already 1/4 the cost of a complete Red system.

The $400 daily rate I quoted, I'm just throwing out there based on the rental rate of similar equipment in that price range of $25,000-$35,000.

The way rental houses USUALLY figure out the rental day/week rate is by dividing the total cost of the rental package by 30, which gives them the day rate for particular package. Weekly rate is usually day rate times three (what they call a 'three day week'). Of course it all depends on supply and dement, also. But then again, they all have different ways of calculating rates, this is just one of them. The question you need to ask yourself is how fast you want the camera to pay for itself, and how many people will pay your price.

$1500/day seems about right for the first little while. Then I'd think it could go down to $1200/day.

Just saying Hi to all. I'm in Kamloops, BC. I'm planning on ordering a package later this year. Although I know it will be a wait, just thought I'd let you know that there are others in BC. I've followed RED since thrst announcements on DVX.com. I use Arri, JVCX2, DVX100B. FCS.

Hello Vancouver,

We're going to have the first ever North West RED Users Group meeting, in Seattle, Sunday, July 15, from noon to 1:30 pm. How else? At a coffee house. *smiles* So far we have four or five people confirmed. And you're invited.

Details including map are here in Post 33 (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=49584&postcount=33) of the RED in RAin City? Seattle WA USA? (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?p=49584#post49584) thread, where full discussion follows the organizing post.

We very much want you to come down to Seattle and attend.

Please let us know either here in this thread, or over in the Seattle thread if you can make it, so we can guess at a count. Thanks so much, and we really hope to see many of you there.

Best,
Jesse Wendel

Yo, Vancouver, Portland, Seattle: More confirmations you are coming to the July 15th RED Users Group meeting please. You are coming, right? Right?

Announcing the first ever Seattle/Portland RED Meeting

Sunday, July 15, 12:00-1:30 PM -- that's 90 minutes.

Hours
Monday - Friday: 6am - 11pm
Saturday - Sunday: 7am - 11pm
Free Wi-fi for customers

Start on time. Hang out afterwards. *smiles*

If you're in, please RSVP below so we can get a count.

Thank you everyone,
Jesse Wendel

Let's have a LOT of people show up. We'll have our shipping schedule by then. It's going to be worth showing up.

People will have stuff to talk about: cooperation and arrangements to set up, shooting schedules to start coordinating, fall back plans to make (e.g.:if your camera hiccups you can borrow mine while it's in the shop during October if during November you'll do the same for me while I'm shooting), and much, much more.

You're not going to want to miss it.

SO PLEASE LET US KNOW YOU'RE GOING TO BE THERE. User Groups are what makes life easier for everyone. Not to mention it's fun, getting to know the girls and guys foresighted enough to buy RED. Some of us have will have been waiting a year and a half by the time we get our cameras. *laughs* It's going to be great, so come hang out with other people at least somewhat similar to yourself. Damn, that's a scary thought.

The North West RED Users Group -- nominations are NOW OPEN for a better name -- may someday save your ass by getting a camera or part to you in minutes to hours. Worst case, some User Group member might have to give a PA or even personally drive you a part or a lens or a camera, but that's three hours max [not counting border delays] and that's hella faster than FedEx and cheaper than same-day air delivery up from RED central. Or perhaps you just need someone who knows the camera even better than you do because you're stuck and you need them now and on set. That's what User Groups are made for.

I love our global community here on reduser.net, but it's virtual. User Groups are physical. You can make friends in person, hang out on each others shoots, grab coffee, teach each other tricks using the actual camera or editing software right there in your very hands.

I've always loved User Groups, the ones where I'm highly competent, where I'm a raw beginner, and where I'm somewhere in between. Everyone wins, because the community as a whole keeps getting stronger.

Support your local Users Group. Come to our first meeting; be a plank-owner!

And please let us know you're attending. Also, please attend! *smiles*

Jesse Wendel

PS. Vancouver, you can post your confirmations here or in the Seattle thread. I'll check both places. *smiles* Also, feel free to private message me with any questions or concerns. -jwe

I'm pretty sure that I won't be able to make it.

But I would like to nominate 'the Cascadian Red Collective' as a name that encompasses the greater part of the Pacific Northwest, is inclusive of both Canadian and American passport holders, acronyms nicely to 'The CRC'... and because my libertarian sense of humour finds the communist connotations worth a chuckle.

Well, it's a shame you won't be able to make it. If you know any other RED folks up there, please invite them to come on down.

Love the name CRC. *laughs*

Hey all,
My name is Brian Hulme. I'm a Vancouver local filmmaker / editor / cinematographer. I just wanted to say what's up and throw my name into the mix for the Red user group here. I am very very very interested in the camera and I wish I could afford to order one now. One day it will be mine, oh yes it will be mine. For now although, I would love to hear about anything going on in the area and touch base with any of you Red users who might be renting out your cams in the future. I wish I could attend Seattle in July, but I am just too busy.
Thanks!

I'm pretty happy too, the Canadian dollar is around 95 cents to the USD. Analysts predict it could be at par by the end of this year. We're living in very promising times.

I'm waiting to see what Birger Engineering comes out with. I think it would be more cost effective to use the Canon EOS Lenses without much quality loss. Other than that I ordered LCD, RED Drive, Battery Pack, Premium Production Pack and of course the body.

I have a few screenplays that we'll be shooting, one at a time. Independent style.

Hello all Canadian film makers, two RED cams will be coming to Saskatchewan, the first will be RED #72 scheduled to ship Sept 15.2007, and the second is scheduled to ship January 2008. There will be initial side by side comparisons on Corner Gas, but will be available after that.

I think anything even close to $1000 a day is quite steep. Consider that if a project has a high enough budget to pay for the camera three fold over the course of a 60 day shoot, it would be cheaper to invest in a camera.

Please keep in mind that rental rates are often quoted at 10 x days per month. There will be certain basics (several $thousand in batteries, some kind of eyepiece/lcd, record media option) that most likely be included with a rental camera...that aren't included when you purchase one.

I'm not sure if I'm stating the obvious, but thought I'd make that point. Rentals are 100% tax deductable, whereas a purchase gets written off over 3 years (I believe).

No idea on the duties to Canadian imports of film/video equipment from the USA. Maybe someone else in this forum can help answer that for us?

The reason I have to consider selling is that the writers strike has hurt us a little more than expected so I'm conserving for cash flow, just in case. I figure I'll buy another RED later on.

If the camera is going to a company that is putting it to work in the film/TV industry there will be the no PST, 5% GST and a small amount of duty depending on what accessories you have. I believe that the body itself falls under NAFTA rules as a duty free item but some of the accessories do not. I ended up paying about $250 in duty. I also made the mistake of having the camera sent to me personally, and not a company, so got dinged another $2200 for PST that I need to put a claim in to get back.

FYI there is a group of eight or ten RED owners in the Vancouver area, who have combined forces to promote and educate about the RED One.

Jim van Dijk, Richard Metzker and I make up Inspired Cinema (http://www.inspiredcinema.com/). We're a rental & workflow house specializing in the Red, and we're acting as a loose hub of sorts for local RED owners and people interested in knowing more. We are actively promoting the camera, and are currently supplying multiple camera packages, including SciFi's new show and several high-profile docs and features.

We're hosting invite-only workflow and footage demos monthly with Digital Film Central (http://www.digitalfilmcentral.com/) in their 2K grading facility. We have our own rental facility down near Clark & Powell for prep and camera tests etc.

If you're in Vancouver, interested in seeing footage or wanting to know more about the camera, send me a PM or contact us via inspiredcinema.com (http://www.inspiredcinema.com/).
