Hello RED Team -

I'm based in the UK and I'll be out in SFO the week before NAB. I will be coming to the show and I really look forward to meeting you all on stand SL5405.

My question is - Is one day as good as the next, or would there be a compelling reason to stay around until the end of the show??

Many thanks for a prompt reply as I have to book my tickets soon.

All the best, Phil

Monday will be busiest and most exciting. We'll all be on the stand, so you will certainly see us.

Later in the week, it will get quieter, so you will be able to get a better look. Although, if it's anything like last year, it won't get that much quieter :-)

If you want to be able to see the show, you do need more than one day - it's big.

Hope that helps!

Graeme

Graeme, any idea which evening might hold a RED event? That might also be important for planning which days to come...

Don't know about that yet....

Thanks Graeme - I realize the situation you are in; in so far as I have a vivid imagination. But good luck with this one - you have at least 1500 'RED heads' routing for you!

Good point Jim - I hadn't thought of that - personally I'd love to meet up with all the 'RED heads' out there. We are part of something really extraordinary after all.

Maybe someone who knows Vegas well could nominate a low cost 'RED bar' where 'RED heads' can meet up and share their visions of what they want to achieve with their new camera? Or we could just have a drink and shoot the S**T as normal?

Anyway I will buy the first round for anyone who turns up on time (to be announced later) in the 'RED bar'. I know I'm going to to regret I said that but I am feeling flush - ooohhhh.

All the very best. Phil

I noted that there is a RED workshop the april 14th. Does it means that part of the RED team will be already at NAB on the 14th. If yes would it be possible to meet you before the 16th, leaving more time for other people to talk to you?

Cheers,
antoine.

Please let it not be Slots-A-Fun. Even though they have 1/2 lb hot dogs for $0.99 and beer for $1.25, that place is just such a dive. Though, it would be a good place to try out the Red One, filming a scene of a $5 crackwhore getting murdered, a la CSI.

But seriously, I'm going to have to suggest the Hofbräuhaus Las Vegas*. It's great fun, has great food, can handle large parties, and there's lots of beer. Check it out at:

*My apologies to those of you visiting from Europe. :o

There is a bar called RED in one of the casinos...but it is too small for a decent chunk of us.

Will everyone order Killian's RED, RED Stripe beer, and Johnny Walker RED Label scotch, I wonder?

No doubt there will be RED eyes the next morning...especially on the dude who gets stuck with the tab!

First day is BUSY. The second day is still busy. In my opinion, Wednesday 18 April 2007, the third day of exhibits, is clearly, the "best" day (the day before the last day). Wednesday is less busy (but everyone's already out of T-shirts by then). Two days makes more sense for a show of this size, so, attending Tuesday and Wednesday would be my choice. The last day is the worst! Thursday, the last day of exhibits, the show closes earlier, exhibitors are in a rush to close their booths, and EVERYBODY's rushing to the airport (LOOOOOONG cab lines).

Anyone interested in flying to NAB with me in a Cessna 210 (6-seater) from Santa Monica, CA on Sunday April 15 returning early Wednesday, April 18 - PM me for info.

Flight time is about 1hr 20 min, easy/free parking and no TSA, long lines etc.

Sharkguy FAA Disclaimer:

This is not an offer of a commercial flight or a scheduled flight. Pursuant to FAA regulations this is a shared flight for a proportionate amount of actual flight expenses.

BTW: Very cool to fly past the grand canyon at low altitude 10K ft instead of 30K ft, and no there is no inflight movie.

Jumping out of a perfectly good airplane..hmm?

I guess if you have red smoke and a red digital cinema canopy on your jump it would be a good idea.

I wish Red would announce when the Red mixer or Red party will be as we are all making plans now. I've got buddies driving up from LA to visit and booking hotels just to hang out, I'd hate for them to do that on the night of the Red party.

This is what I love about you guys - you are all so practical and fun to be with.

Special thanks to Chasmo for suggesting the Hoff House - top hole mate! I'll be gagging for a decent beer by the time I get to Vegas.

Special thanks to Ralph for suggesting best days - I like the logic.

Mark, Gibby, Sharkguy and Shawn thanks for chipping in.

Here's the cunning plan:

Based on what Ralph says: Tuesday early evening, 6-30pm is when I'll put $300 behind the bar for drinks at the Hoff House. First come first served, you have to bring something red - a scarf - a tie - a hat so that I know you're not some scum bag freeloading on my tab. When it's gone - that's it from me.

If Tuesday night is the RED party night and it's open to reservationists the above event will move forward 24 hours to Wednesday evening.

If there is another RED party on Wednesday night the whole thing is cancelled.

Please let me know if you can see any flaws in the above. Also, please let me know if you think you might show up! Shawn your mates are welcome if it fits in with your plans. All welcome!! Even Mezmo - ooh get him!

Cheers, Phil

I'll take you up on that beer...and hell, maybe I'll buy you one as well! I've just finished making my travel plans and will be arriving on Monday (will miss the floor on Monday) in time to eat dinner and have some brews, so if people are around, let's get together.

Brook, since hanging around with divers this summer I love you guys, I call Norman Kent a good friend, yet I'm not jumping. Ever. ... I may have said this before, but it bears repeating...

"Skydiving is a sport in which you are DEAD unless something GOOD happens. All other sports you are ALIVE unless something BAD happens."

My very own personal quote, use it but credit it properly... :)

Do you have any tips for less expensive hotels?

"Skydiving is a sport in which you are DEAD unless something GOOD happens. All other sports you are ALIVE unless something BAD happens."

I like that one. ...I've always liked my dad's opinion on skydiving too - "why would anyone want jump out of a perfectly good airplane?"

I personally have never tried it. But I attribute that to a good friend of mine who has trained jumpers for the Marines for years and took a brief try as a sky diving instructor in the civilian world. Maybe he's told me too many stories or something.

OTOH, I do plenty of stupid stuff that's equally dangerous or more so. And if anyone is looking to send a RED One to Mars and need a DP for the job, I'm your man! ;) Or the moon would be OK, but I'd really like to give that whole astronaut thing a try if/when NASA finally gets around to sending people to places other than the ISS.

FYI: for those of you who'd prefer a private charter to Vegas from anywhere in the US instead of Southwest Airlines my neighbor has a part 135 air charter.

What's the "smart" hotel to stay at for NAB?

I.E., walking distance to show etc.

Graeme Nattress
02-12-2007, 06:53 PM
Nearest hotels are the Hilton and the Rennaisance. I doubt there's any rooms left at either of them by now though.... Next best thing to do is probably get a room at a hotel on or near the monorail.

Someone else suggested some other bar would be the place to be on Wednesday night but I've lost that post temporarily. I'll try and dig that up though.

I'm no expert, but I've been a few times and you definately don't want to drive or wait in a taxi line. Any hotel along the strip that is close to the monorail is good.

The only thing I hate about that enormous mug of beer is that they only serve their lager in that. If you order their hefeweizen, it comes in this prissy little long glass. Am I the only person who likes hefe? Because when I order that, I am the ONLY one in the crowded raucous restaurant standing on my bench NOT swinging around an enormous mug. It just makes me feel so inadequate. :umm:

He he he "Lightweight" - just kidding - as Al Murray the Pub Landlord says "Eating is cheating"

Well LNZ - you should be so lucky - strangely enough that's when/how most of my hangovers started as well - is it coincidence?? - what are the chances of that happening??

Having said that my absolute worst hangover started at 11-00 am and finished at about 10pm and it was at "The Henly Regatta" which is quite a posh do. But them "Toffs" certainly know how to drink. We all started with half a bottle of Champagne !! Hick!

Tranquil, just remember, in America we serve beer the correct way, cold. hehehe. Though I do miss fine English beer. When I was over there, was introduced to Speckled Hen at a 600 year old pub in SouthHampton. The version they import here in America is not as good.

Sounds like a good place to collapse after a day on the exhibition floor. I can only imagine what it's going to be like at the Red stand. I fear it will be nigh impossible to get the ear of a Red guy and discuss in technical detail my questions - or to actually hold a unit for that matter. But I am really looking forward to seeing the new test footage.

Yes, on Wednesday Night, alot of cool video/tech folks have been meeting over at the Star Trek Hilton's "Quark's Bar". It's really a blast. In recent years, notable people from Newtek, Adobe, Play, Serious Magic, Digital Juice, Electric Image, Luxology, and others have shown up. It seems every year it just gets more interesting. If you don't have anything going on Wed Night... it's a great time, and fun atmosphere.

Hi Shawn, Yes I'll be in the chair as they say for the first half of the evening or however long it takes to blow $300 - first come first served. I'm not sure how many drinks that would translate to ? Some where between 30 and 50 I guess? I'd be pleasantly surprised if more than 20 people show up to be honest.

I don't think that many folk on the reduser forum can make it to NAB and out of the ones that can, I'm sure there are other private plans afoot elsewhere. I think the sticky thing is a good idea but I'm sure how that works??

In any event it'll be my pleasure to buy you a drink!

See you at NAB!!
