I figured I would start a new thread to inquire on this topic. It's been coming up in a few threads and I'm sure several would like to know if there are any updates.

Obviously, this is a loose guideline. But one thing of interest is that we will convert all orders received to serial numbers in the next couple of weeks. That should provide all customers with a bit better feel of where they stand.
Jim
Jim, to my knowledge you have not yet published a conversion of orders to serial numbers yet, can you please update us all on this?
Please advise... Many thanks

I know RED don't want you to plan any productions on the schedule - but it would really be help to know where you are in the line!

Does anyone know if a response has come through yet ????

Hey guys,
I am guessing we will all get an email when they have sorted it out, yo.

As a customer who put deposits on a full system and lenses the first morning of NAB 2007, it sure would be nice to know where I stand in the line.
Based on the understanding that Red stopped giving out serial numbers after the first 1500 orders, and the fact that you couldn't order again until NAB 2007, I would assume I'm somewhere in the 1500-2000 area. Hard to imagine they sold 500 cameras in 2 hours when the online ordering system was not working properly in the booth...
I've inquired a few times and have been told my camera would ship sometime in January or February, but that was before the latest engineering hold.
All I know is that my order has been "time stamped", but Red won't correlate that to a serial number. So all the published schedules are really meaningless unless you know how the two numbering systems relate.
I'm sure a lot of you are in the same boat, and would greatly appreciate one system for tracking shipping progress instead of two.
Like everyone else, I can't wait to get my hands on this fabulous camera. But when you're not part of the serial number "party," you feel like a second class customer....lost in some "time stamped" purgatory.
So let's get it cleared up and put everyone on equal footing!
Seems Red could simply assign serial numbers according to the time-stamped sequence. If someone bails, then either pull that number or simply give someone an earlier number. Who really cares if the number changes by a serial number or two, when all we want is a camera as soon as possible :)
Anyone else want to chime in??

I have been buying cameras for 25 years and never has a manufacture given me the serial number prior to my purchase...I wouldnt expect Red to give out this information, which tells the competitors exactly how many cameras they have sold. Obviously Red operates on a different business plan, so they may give out serial numbers but I wouldnt count on it.

Jim actually did say that RED would begin converting order #'s to serial #'s... He's quoted in the first post of this thread. I started this thread after seeing about a dozen people continuously posting in random threads and places about this.

I agree, but with the caveat that I don't have to know immediately. Still, within the next month or so would be nice. Jim has said he would do this, so I am confident he will.

I think that's where RED/Jim are different. I don't think he cares who knows the number of cameras. I think he wants them to know how bad they are getting their asses kicked.:shiftyph34r:

perhaps RED should just convert order #'s to a # in line ( not serial numbers) .. serial number's tie a camera to a person .. when a persons cancels a order if the serial numbers is not tied to a person then next person in line gets the camera ... or if a serial number camera gets damaged before it is released to customer then that customer has to wait for ?? repair ? remanufactured ? with no assigned serial number the customer would just get the next camera in the warehouse ...
