View Full Version : ASA Rating?

There don't seem to be any references in the archives, or at least I couldn't find any. So, please forgive me if this has been covered. Has there been any indication as to the relative ASA rating we can expect from RED ONE?

Hi,
From looking at David Stimp's tests 320 asa is roughly in the middle of the dynamic range.
If you scene has a low dynamic range you may well be a couple of stops slower. This is the same as other digital cameras.

Tests so far seem to indicate ISO 200-320. But with such a good DR you could easily expose at 500 or 640 and be fine.

Thanks guys. For some reason I had it in my mind it would be in the 320 range. Good to have solid info.

Hi Evin,
I may be missing the point, but if the scene had only 4.5 stops of dynamic range and you rate at 640 asa peak white would be very low, under 50%. Normally with digital I would 'expose to the right' to use the full range.

11.3 stops of latitude... presumably split on both sides of the exposure.
I assume that in-camera gain can be boosted, but there was some talk of leaving that to REDCINE. I imagine it will end up in the camera.
With gain, of course, comes noise.
Long story short? It's difficult to characterize a digital sensor in ASA terms.

Hi Brook,
As David's tests showed about 8.5 stops because of an error in processing one can't be sure that it's +/- 5.625 stops from 320 ASA, but that is the general area.
I think you sum up very well, I nearly came unstuck 10 days ago when I assumed a Viper was 320 asa for a cosmetics commercial I was shooting. As I was using huge soft sources with a dynamic range of about 5 stops the ASA rating was about 40!, and that was before I tried to balance out the green color cast losing a further stop! (20 ASA)

Ouch! I'd go crazy at 20ASA...

Does anyone know why we did not hear or see very much of Mr. Stumps tests or conclusions? Also has anyone heard if there is plans in the works for full independent testing by a group of DOP's on spike or another prototype when it is ready?
A complete independent test by profesional DP's would go a long way to show the overall strengths and weaknesses of the camera and would drum up a lot more interest about it for NAB.

Once the specs are finalized, and the camera goes into production, there will be a lot of people testing it in various cine-style and EFP style configurations. Gonna be fun...

It makes no sense to me that they would not do any testing by DP's that are not involved with red before production and shipping takes place. This is standard process with new cameras to the market.
If no independent testing takes place before shipping begins I would be very skeptical that red was trying to hide something. Testing by profesionals is just part of a process that shows the specs of a camera and its effectiveness of features.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are tests taking place right now [or at least in the very near future] of the variety that you are requesting. They've always stated that such tests were in the plan.

Hi,
Hopefully Geoff Boyle gets one, he is testing all available digital cameras & 16mm film next week I think.
