Just thinking here...

When RED hit the streets, 35mm optics got insanely expensive overnight in april/mai 2008

WIll the same happen now, or are the vendors ready?

Long zooms are my primar concern these days...

But primes, too...

My guess is not to worry too much this go round. Lens manufacturers seem to have really stepped up and will continue to do so in the near future. Most of the Epics will be purchased by pre-existing Red and film camera owners. Of course the 2nd hand Reds might find their way to 1st time users with some demand for glass, but my guess is they'll generally opt for stills lenses and/or rentals.

But I could be entirely wrong. ;-)

I second Jim on that. I don't think it will affect too much...16mm glass on the other hand, thats another story altogether.

Yep...I see 16mm having a bit of a dry spell after Scarlet. Unless, of course, RED decides to start giving away miniprimes as door prizes :hat:

Ah... now I see what you ment abot S16...

I have just never had much interest for S16 glass and have been scratching my head as to where that glass will fit, but of course:
Scarlet
Ikonoskop

I think PL lenses will be in great demand if the Sony F3 is a success. Not to mention smaller cameras like the Panasonic AF100.
In fact I wouldn't be surprised if Red ends up selling more RPP sets because of these two cameras, since their lenses are currently the best deal to be had for a prime set.

With all of the mount options I think you will see demand go up for old Nikon Glass as well.

The photographers who jump on EPIC will not want to use PL glass (weight and form factor.

If anything I thiink you will see a demand for portable lightweight glass.

That's true but it doesn't negate the demand for more cine/PL glass from all the shoots that will be working with a focus puller.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the demand rise sharply for lightweight zooms like the Angies or the new Zeiss.

This might be a bit off-topic, but what lenses cover 3K?

This, I agree with for sure.

It will be interesting to see if the touch screen and RPP's (or Cooke S4i) with data enabled will be able to pull focus.

I'm not trying to get rid of focus pullers just suggesting that we might be getting away from whips and into more electronic versions of pulling focus.

I think the fact that EPIC day one can really fully "use" Canon glass (and Nikon) will reduce the overall pressure on the market for PL glass, especially if the focus tools for Canon on EPIC are as good as we hear.

Many small owner/operators like myself initially shot Canon glass, but the hassles with Birger and the nightmare that is pulling focus on most Canon glass, pushed me to PL glass when I got busy enough to justify the cost. I will always (ok, for a while) need PL glass for larger commercial shoots, but for some of my own doc work, I could return to Canon land - again, if the focus tools are good enough.

Just another factor to consider.

OLD lenses will come back hard..

people are understanding the characteristics old lenses give on digital sensors.. its just more pleasing to the eye (if your going for that film LOOK)

modern lenses are great and all.. but they just lack the character old lenses have..
and sure some people say.. add the look in post..
still doesnt do it...IMO

just depends on the dps...

I wont use modern glass if i can help it.. ill stick with old cookes.. my kowas.. standard speeds.. so on..

theres a place for ultra sharp modern glass (commercials)
but cinema and episodic tv id rather have character lenses.

anyways.. semi rant on new glass finished.. but i do think older cine glass with either hold its value or jump.. they just dont make glass like they did

PL lenses are already hard to find or at a premium...I suspect we will see an increase in prices once the Epic ships. I for one will need 4 new sets of glass.

have you checked the prices on Super Speeds lately...these are 25+ year old lenses still commanding in excess of 40k

Before this stuff skyrocketed back in 2008, one could pick up a set of supers MK III @ 20-25k...

For a while in 2008 - 2009 they were in the 60's...

This is what I worry about.

There is bound to be some limitations coverage wise though on the wider supers and standards right at 5K? At least wide open.

Sure, but for broadcast work, I think 4kHD might be as good as ever... Thus: No Problem
