View Full Version : RED RAY encoder

With RED RAY getting closer, the most burning question I have is:
How to create a RED RAY master?
Once I have a final timeline in my NLE, what do I use to encode the final movie?
Is there a software-based RED CODE encoder? If so, is it offered free? Is it sold separately? Included with any of the existing products?
I Saw a RED RAY screening on the RED DAY at the RED Hollywood Studios and was very impressed, but I have no idea how one would create an appropriately encoded master to be screened that way.
Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Yuval,

There is nothing out there except what is on the red.com website about REDRay.

My guess would be that this will probably be answered at NAB! ;-)

It has earlier been said that the Rocket can encode RedRay.

Everything subject to change, of course.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a "Rocket II" at NAB, though, for realtime Epic playback/decoding, though.

It has earlier been said that the Rocket can encode RedRay.

Really? I have never seen it written anywhere. Are you sure?
So far I only saw that RED ROCKET was for transcoding FROM RedCode to other codecs, as in DECODING RedCode, not ENCODING.
I would love to learn otherwise. Where did you see that information?

Loong time ago.

Things have since been rather silent around this and earlier announced Rocket Roadmap specs (subject to change...)

It says nothing about it in the product specs...

I really hope you're right about this, but can't find any current information to support it. :crying:

I have wondered this, and asked the question before...after all even with a possible Rocket 2 there is still no 'record' button or inputs for that matter on the RED RAY.

And as many know from the 'other guys' the record feature on a device at least doubles the cost of a playback machine.

That said, I'm sure any RRR would still be way, way less than an HD SR machine.

It was a part of a conversation her on Reduser between me and Deanan on RedRay and Rocket upcomming features...
Bear in mind that the other features we discussed back then are also not yet available for the most part...

As I said: Loooong time ago and everything is subject to change

My theory on the big suprise was some kind of NLE from RED.
Now if they can just turn REDCineX to something similiar to AE or better yet Shake ;)
With the REDRAY in mind of course :)

There is no point getting into the software business if you're Jim.

He has a genius in Graeme and a great support team for RCX and firmware updates...an NLE division is overhead nobody needs, especially in this day and age when software is being sold for so little -look at DS for $10,000. And they're giving away firmware and software upgrades now! Jim would be fully justified in starting to charge for these maintenance releases/improvements, but I bet people would scream bloody murder because they're used to the free fixes they've been getting.

RedRay is commendable in that Jim wants to create a pipeline, and I fully believe he could have a hit as the 4K champion...provided there's a way to record to the media so it can be played back in the RR.

I guess Deanan is the man to grab...

As I mentioned, there are also some other roadmap items on the RR roadmap I'd have loved to see...

Indeed. We'll discuss RED RAY workflow at NAB.

Is that to go with the REDRay 4K Projector!!! ;-)

I think the first RED Ray concept was to sell the player for $1000.. a 4K DVD player..
encoding to REDCODE RGB is a big thing to think about.. if the encoder is a free software and computers are able to playback the stream, then this would globalize the format, making it the standard for everything from internet streaming to theatrical projection.. I'm not sure if RED have the intentions for this.. but, anyway this format must be able to stand as an output format for anything, any NLE, etc..

This is my guess as to what the BIG surprise is at NAB. and that at least 1 (most likely more) Studio has joined the initiative to make it a new standard.

Hope all is well in Egypt fellow reduser!
