Noob question, first non-stills lens I've ever owned...what's that removable ring? It's glassless and is marked s5.5. Some kind of filter adapter? Or is it a part of the lens that's not actually supposed to be removable?

First of all, nice photos!
The S stands for series, as in series 9, 10 etc. It's the way Tiffen and others used to size filters. So that lens has an adapter ring for series 5.5 filters - I think.
Series 9 was very common back in the day. Don't know if you can find any series 5.5 filters but you could try on ebay.
