Here's some pics from today - taken 52 stories directly above the Apple store on 59th Street, on the roof of the GM building.
Testing a few things out before a technology demonstration this Saturday and Sunday with a company called AOPTIX http://www.aoptix.com/.
Aoptix has a technology that allow the transmission of multiple streams of HD to be beamed point-to-point via laser. Ths will be used by NBC in the Beijing Olympics.
We'll be shooting some 4K footage of the Men's Marathon trials on Sat. and the NY Marathon on Sunday with BOND (Red #0007) from the roof of the GM Building using 800mm (400mm Canon + 2X) and beaming 720 HD-SDI over a laser to a truck on the other side of the park. Bond is one of many camera shooting the trials and the marathon - all beaming over a laser beam.
We went up today to check it out - and yeah, we'll be back with O'Connor 2060 and some solid Ronford legs - the wind BLOWS up there!!
Check out the shot of the LCD which shows the kids playing hockey in the park far below!!

As in wireless, Mark? From what you know about the technology, what is the maximum distance the PTP can go?

Even to get more closer with
http://www.sanjinjukic.com/extras/Carl_Zeiss_Jena_Fern%23893C90.jpg
Carls Zeiss Jena 500mm f/8 M42+Nikon adapter+2X extender on RED Nikon F = 1000mm is extremely sharp lens vintage variant.
or go with new lens even more extreme like Leica Apo Telyt R Zoom 280-800mm because:
"This unique modular system covers the range from 280 to 800 mm, and, with the LEICA APO-EXTENDER-R 2x even up to 1,600 mm."

How to mount this lens on RED?
Either you go Birger EOS RED mount+Leica R adapter
or
you order/rent P+S Technik Leica APO-Telyt PL Conversion because they make conversion from Leica R to PL mount.

And don't forget that quality of LEICA glass is definitely better than Zeiss, Cooke, Canon or what else.
Dalsa did some Leica R lens conversions for Origin recently and it's possible to rent those lenses too.

Nice stuff Sanjin - the lens in the photos is Canon 400mm PL mount 2.8 - (then loose 2 on stops on 2X)
rented from Abel Cine Tech NY.

Mark,
find P+S Technik Leica APO-Telyt PL Conversion to rent and you get 800mm without loosing any stop (especially for night shots).
FEDEX can ship you the lens from Europe overnight.

One more alternative:
If you have possibility to get Birger EOS beta RED mount than you go to the first shop around a corner and get
Sigma 50-500mm APO-DG f4-6.3 and with 2x extender and you are already in 1000mm, but also loosing about 2 stops.
It also has manual iris control in Nikon F variant.

Sigma 50-500mm APO-DG f4-6.3 a great telephoto lens for the buck.

mark, how did you mount the canon lens? with birger? or something else?
if you're going with a gun that big already, you should try the sigma 300-800mm--it's a gorgeous lens and it is razor-sharp, every bit as good as any of my canon L glass. not expensive, relatively speaking, and the 300-800mm range gives you a lot of flexibility.
it is so freaking cool to see how people are using these cameras. thanks for sharing this, it's awesome!

Not to be a party-pooper here, but the ledge on that roof looks awfully low. Any crew member going within 8 feet of that edge should be tethered with a proper safety harness. It is the law here in Ontario and probably is in NY as well.
I know film shoots seem like fun, but they are still workplaces and are regulated as such. Be careful.
You should be able to rent harnesses from a good locations-supply house.
NO SHOT in the world is worth dying for.

Actually, this ledge is legal in NY as-is as I understand it - but we are tethering on Sat and Sunday for safety as the wind blows hard up there - I am crazy - but not TOTALLY crazy -

Because of a very strong wing on the top of skyscraper I would definitely recommend use of the strongest fluid head fixed on something stronger than ordinary tripod.
My choice would be ARRIHEAD 2 with all those hand wheel controllers and jogbox.

Just be aware of jumping image because if you have even a milimicron stressed movement of your
camera/lens at the big telephoto distances like 500m to 1.5 km it's about that moving image jumps like crazy.

There are some very very sharp refractor telescopes out there for those really far away shots. I know I know your more or less stuck with a given f stop but it's not like your shooting for depth of field anyways. lol The Questar mirror lenses have different adapters availble for them for cine work at prime focus.

If you would like to to achieve the similar results with the same lens on RED than you should
use Leica R to EOS adapter on Birger RED Mount
or one of P+S Technik Leica R to PL convergion lenses.

Wonder where AOptix got the idea from?
it started with a technology their scientists created to view stars via telescope without the "sparkle" - or "flicker" - to be honest, it's all a bit over my head -

On the topic of ridiculously long lenses, check out the Canon EOS 1200mm f/5.6:
http://www.canon-europe.com/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/EF_Lenses/Fixed_Focal_Length/EF_1200mm_f56L_USM/
You'd have to know someone willing to let you experiment, since there aren't too many of these in production.
There's an interesting article on the 1200mm lens on a Canon XL1 Here (http://dvinfo.net/canon/images/images17.php)
With the small sensor size, and a 2x adapter, they were shooting with an effective focal length of 17280mm!!

Sanjin, you have wrong information. :icon_bs: P+S does NOT do the PL conversion of the Leica APO-Telyt anymore. This is what P+S told me when I wanted to get one:
The converter you found on our website is unfortunately not available anymore. The website showing it is normally offline and can only be reached via the search function

Pawel,
the production of Leica R Lenses were discontinued in January 2009.
BTW if you would like to get one (discounted) now is a right time (BH or similar shops) and for the PL conversion you could still ask
(in the case that P+S Technik would "refuse" your special order) maybe the best
Les Bosher in UK (http://www.lesbosher.co.uk/), Duclos in US or a similar lens repair & conversion company...
Also as I remember well ZGC (owner of Cooke) as an official US agent for P+S Technik was selling it before too.
Maybe you could ask them too about a certain options to get it...
