"...press record."
"Is it going?"
"I think - yeah, it's going. Holy shit. I'm shooting 4K right now."
"This is so cool! Think about it... 28MB... 28MB... 28MB..."
"Yeah man... oh geez, look at the depth of field."
"Focus on that lamp."
"...there. That's fantastic."
"Bring the exposure down a little?"
"Yeah... there we go. Hold on, let me pull up the histogram."
"..."
"Ok, got it. I remember Graeme said to expose to the right... like this."
"Sweet!"
"Ooo! Where's the focus assist?"

Human skin, close up, with available light. Then lots of other things, with available light. Then I'll get my DP to come around and let him get his lights out...

Porn?

Er... Anyway, my first subjects will probably be kids, dogs, cat, the neighborhood... Trees, bushes, cars, random people...

Yep, should be big fun spray-make-up-ing an entire porn cast for a 4K shoot.

I'm very lucky - I live on a hill overlooking the Thames Valley - assumming it isn't hissing it down with rain I'll go to a local beauty spot - Winter Hill - you often get really nice clouds over the valley.

I have no idea what type of lens I'll need for that ? Any thoughts? What is anyone's opinion of Cokin filters? I purchased some for my other DV cameras and they seemed to work OK - but would they be good enough with a PRO lens of some sort?

All suggestions welcome.

Thanks, Phil

The real question is; can 4k as a distribution medium catch on in the marketplace if it doesn't make porn more accessible, more exciting, etc. Every other recent market penetration story includes a real push from the mega-billion dollar porn industry.

For 4k porn the casting may take longer than the shooting and the make-up crew may outnumber all the other departments. Of course I always seem to fall for the makeup girls anyway...

Westinghouse is taking orders for their 4k LCD panel - only $50K

I would love to figure out a way to use 4 1080p projectors in an array that would support quad HD res (3840 by 2160). People I have polled in the AV space suggest a unit called a Spyder could do it but they are pricey and they tell me I would need 4 separate computers to drive the whole thing which makes me think I would need to split the image data into four streams which sounds crazy.

Currently the only way I know of to drive any 4k display is via the DCI spec using a wavelet codec called J2K (JPEG2000). To my knowledge that tech is proprietary and is essentially a closed system. You can use their spec to create the master but I am not clear how anyone but them can play it back. LaserPacific is doing 4k DI but monitoring on a 2k Christie projector in house. Do they never actually see the 4k image other than going to the theater to see what it looks like after it has gone through filmout and then onto release stock? Blimey.

Here's a question for the Red Team AFTER the camera is shipping - how could we drive a 4k display if we had one. What pipe would be required? What data rates? New octoMacs with a fast RAID via UDI? Octo-link HD-SDI if that exists? Some new AJA or BMD board still in R&D?

We just purchased a Sony 4K projector with four dual link cards. My understanding is that to show 4K we need a Quvis (or similar) DCI server with their Octal SDI output for the Sony Projector. Basically we will export DPX from the NLE (or REDCINE) to the Quvis and the Quvis will drive the projector. Not simple. We have put off purchasing the server until after NAB since I expect new (and less expensive) servers to be available by then.

Blair S. Paulsen

I will be very impressed if the Quvis server can play back uncompressed DPX files @24fps. Perhaps the fact that the server does NOT have to de-compress J2K files actually makes it easier. My assumption, perhaps totally off base, was that the bitstream of anything but J2K would be too large. I also supposed that the whole DCI server topology relied on a tight set of parameters optimized for the J2K codec but I don't have any specific knowledge of that.

I hope this path you are on with the Sony 4k projector works out well. I hope you will share your experiences with all of us. It may be a few years off but IMHO the holy grail is image as data from the Mysterium sensor all the way to the DCI server.

Mike Devlin

I believe the Quvis does process the DPX files using their "patented wavelet compression technologies" producing JPEG2000 type format and then plays that. We will learn more as we go. Right now we have been talking to Quvis because they are on the "Gear We Use" list on the RED website, and I know that some of the RED demos of 4k footage used Quvis with the Sony projector. There will no doubt be other players over time.

A wider selection of 4K projectors would be nice. The good news is the Sony does not cost much more that the 2K projectors from Christie, Barco and NEC. We were in the process of purchasing a 2K Christie when we decided to go for the Sony 4k given we have a couple of REDs on order. Eventually lower cost solutions will be available, although they may not be DCI certified like the Sony.

Since we have a 4K projector in our studio we may work with a few of the other RED users doing wildlife / natural history stuff on the West Coast along the lines of the stock footage discussion Gibby and Camdiver started. Lots of possibilities. At least we can see our own footage in 4k even if near term the rest of the world sees it as HDTV!

My first footage will be the classic focus and color charts utilizing all the lenses I intend to use including the Nikons.

Then after running the redcine 4K workflow, me and my hard drives will head straight to Laser Pacific, LA HD post house, for 1080 HDCAM tests/scope/monitors and EFILM for a 35mm test print.

Several thousand dollars later, I will be a veteran Red shooter ready to shoot a demo reel and with the answers clients want to know.

I don't do porn, but I'd imagine there's several that will allow it if you dangle an extra $50 in front of them. How else do you explain "Girls Gone Wild"?

But to put this in perspective, I showed my wife the full 4K frame of the one milk girl where you can see all the fine hairs on her face/neck, every little dimple, mole, etc.. My wife's only statement was "You're not pointing that thing at me."

So yeah, I think you're mostly right.
