I would love to see a wired remote for our Red that would replace the buttons and knobs on the back of the Red. Especially since it is not the ideal position on the camera and awkward to adjust.
Ideally it would have its own LCD for menus and would allow the AC to adjust all Red functions and have multiple user buttons for Waveform, Focus Assist, WB, Zebras, etc.
This would greatly speed up on set use of Red.

Ability to add metadata with a text pad would be killer as well.

I mentioned this about a year ago... I looked for the thread but couldn't find it. Arri makes a small "faceplate" that replicates the camera display and is connected by a cable. You can position it anywhere on a Noga arm and can enter camera functions, check speed, anything that you would do from the main display unit. It works with all of their current (Arricam, 435, 235, 416) and older 24v cameras (SR3, 535, etc.) It has one of those awful 3-letter acronyms that Arri names all of its accessories, like EDU (external display unit)
It would be great if Red made something like this available, to help AC's, for remote head and crane work, etc.
Cheers,
Harry

Good ideas !
Even better, let's make it wireless :shifty:

Or just enable bluetooth and let me control via my phone

I would prefer a wired remote similar to the Arri. It would need hard buttons to access the most common functions. This would greatly speed up operation on a shoot.

Hi MANXLX...
No, not the RCU. It looks exactly like the camera display and is very tiny; just the size of the display. No rotary encoder (knob on the RCU) Literally just the display and the 3 or 4 buttons that surround it.
I did a little more research and found it. It's called the EXD-1:

Neither me, thanks.
But for the RED may be even acceptable wireless solution - there is no f** expensive stock inside, so if it would get crazy, no harm done.

Not like they don't have enough to work on right now as it is ....... but yeah this would be a great addition.

who said it has to be made by Red?

I'd love to see something like this (A RED RCU) to make RED not only the premier Digital cinema camera, but the premier Hardline EFP camera as well.
Add paint box features to to live outputs and iris control for the B4 mount and we might just have one camera to rule them all.
I've said this elsewhere, but the idea of an RCU enabled RED feeding 1080 or 720 while recording 4K to a Red Drive of CF card seems the ideal configuration for live imag while leaving gobs of flexibility for post.
I can't imagine a more powerful setup for live concert performances destined for post/music videos.

Hmm, anybody knows what's really inside?

As it has to communicate with the cam (think about comm protocols), it might better if they release it...
On the other hand...
Maybe it could be driven by the cam ? And the hardware from somebody else ?
Or comms protocols never change - yes, lets give it to somebeody else.
A question of definition.

This would be an amazing solution for me. We shoot a lot of multi-cam conferences, and are looking to upgrade our current camera situation, but I need to have iris control and paint functions. Is there anything like this on the horizon?

Very good idea. This would solve many problems:
-the 1st AC could actually use the zoom function of the focus assist while the camera is in operation (when it's most useful!).
-Remote/Start stop is highly needed function of any camera, I don't know if there was another solution.
-One could permanently set the battery (and the Drive when it becomes available) to the back of the camera without having to remove it everytime a menu setting needs to be changed. This would help tremendously to bring the center of gravity backwards.
My suggestion: make it a touch screen panel, small, rugged and intuitive. Maybe in Red 2 it could replace the Menu/joystick and become dockable.

F23 has a similar remote control pad doesn't it?

Maybe Howard Preston at Preston Cinema Systems can incorporate the remote display in the FITZ unit that he sells that would be awesome. I'm sure there will be many companies making products to work with the RED camera. Also I'll mention it Larry Barton at Cinematography Electronics. Florian nice to see your on board let's go out to lunch when you have time. We have serial numbers 146,147,148,149, and 150 coming soon at Keslow Camera.
