Empire State Building - shot with 800mm from the roof of GM building on 59th Street & 5th Ave. A bit soft - but I still like it -

Nice shot. Was that a 400 lense with a doubler?

I'm guessing it's the PL-converted 400mm Canon + 2X setup shown here:

...looks like some more antennas have been added since Kong's visit.

I've been told that the top of that building was originally designed as a dock for Zeppelins.

That's VERY soft.
Is it a backfocus problem?

That's VERY soft.
Is it a backfocus problem?
no - that was just me - I was just me poppin' off a few a shots focusing by eye off the LCD - I have some nice sharp stuff from the roof once I started using the Focus Assist -

How's the focus assist working?

Hi Mark,
would be nice to see some more grabs...

Soft compared to what? I haven't actually seen much footage from Red using a 400 + 2x converter. Does it get much sharper than this? Not only because of the 2x, but also just the distance. Air turbulence is always a factor with ultra-telephoto shots. What I've seen of long tele DSLR shots (on safari, etc.) they are seldom perfectly crisp even after sharpening.

How's the focus assist working?
I've worked with it last week. It's some invention indeed, a great tool, though I think I should learn to use it in more situations.
It's a line graph showing the (appearantly normalized) luma value of the center horizontal line of the image.
It performs very well on textured surface, you can easily spot when you're in maximal focus there.
I found it much harder to obtain maximal focus on a non-textured surface with a hard edge, a situation in which the oldfashioned ringing edge sharpening performs well.
I found it hard to detect exactly when I was in maximal focus there.
Perhaps I should get some more practice with it...
Graeme, I wonder how the focus assist would work when you'd apply a high-pass filter to the line instead of normalizing it.
What's your idea about this?
