Hmmm.... Now I really want to know how the RED 1.8" FLASH module works. What have they done to make it quick to swap media? Do we get special sleds/trays to mount the SSD to so it will have a more robust connector? Or is the module not designed for media to be swapped as readily as CF or ExpressCard?

Yes Samsung anounced this nand in the spring. It has a read speed of about 60 meg/s and a write of 45meg/sec. Is this fast enough for Red with a 233 meg/sec compression /codec???? With this size chipset it can be up to 128gig nand in a single layer 1.8 flash. Is this based on the Sony SxS system expresscard? Can Red use this Sony SxS size express?
Sandisk will have its 32gig version by late spring. Samsung 64 by fall '08?

Where did you get the 233MB/s figure? I don't think that number's ever been mentioned. REDCODE RAW 4K is approximately 24MB/s.

I guess I caught a nerve, and really got to Andrew. Sorry buddy!
I really enjoy all the views and opinions express in this forum...even if they are not sometimes my own.

This is an open forum to learn and or teach the Red community. As a senior member Andrew I hope you will embrace it like I do. And As for T.r.o.l.l. I lke my name! Top,Red,Online,Legitimate,Liasion... I like that ... Thanks!!

As for Red code... I did think it was closer to uncompressed 2k ie... 440 or 880 raw ala sr. That is good news!! I gues when I did the math I was using bits...as in 233mega bits... not quite 24 meg bites. The new Express cards can handle that compression with great ease. I think these SxS cards by Sandisk and Samsung will be the next great nand format. Why are so many on reduser worried about handling Red code with final cut??? No problem!!

Thanks for the info.

Huh, this normal here to delete posts?

What kind of horrible stuff you've written, guys?

It doesn't really make any sense to delete a post and then carry on the discussion/fallout - I'm completely lost...anyway back to the subject - I think these Samsung 1.8" SSD's have a write speed of 100MB/sec which I'd imagine should easily be enough to handle 4K RedCode RAW (although the proof will be in the pudding of course). Does the fact that it's SATA II make any difference to Red or will that be ok? The delivery date is Q4 2008 so all that's left is wild speculation about the price...anybody?

Many other manufacturers have made such announcements in the last six months but only Sandisk has put out any product as far as I know and you have to really ask around to get your hands on their SSDs. The companies that already have product out there have much smaller ones with similar speeds but the thing about an SSD that uses the physical specs of your average HDD is that it's easy to get speed out of it because the physical size doesn't limit you to using the high density chips. You can put a bunch of low density ones on there and keep fast write/read rates easily. Really all these announcements amount to is manufacturers stating they are ready to push flash technology for more than just flash drives.

The announcement I read says, 100 Mo/s read and 120 Mo/s write ! They only use 1,9W both 1,8" and 2,5" both PATA and SATA no price yet.

Cheers,
Damien

Yes, my post was about the Sata I which will be ready earlier...still fast enough... ready around spring? Sata II looks like it is a ways off according tho other posts. Maybe the SxS cards by Sandisk will be great. They will have a 32 gig soon..begining of the new year.. justdrop in your laptop...at 700 to 800 Mb/s or over 90MB/s. express cards.

Andrew didn't write anything offensive, horrible or ill-willed. I just deleted it to keep the thread on track. Nobody did anything wrong.
