Hey Blue,

This is a tough one. To get it here quickly and insured, it will cost a bit, probably $400 - $600 to use Fed Ex.

I'm thinking I might fly over and pick mine up. I know Mike Seymour did this and was happy he did. He could run it through its paces, talk to the RED guys first hand, and make sure everything was perfect before bringing it back. I saw his camera at the FOX ACS day a few weeks back. Incredible.

My concern is that there could be a simple manufacturing fault, and I would have to ship it back and forth, which would take too much time and cost more than a plane ticket anyway.

I suppose another option would be to get someone local to check it out thoroughly and then have it sent over.

Beyond the shipping cost, my understanding is that there is just GST, which is refundable anyway if you are registered. No duty etc. on this type of equipment.

Where are you on the Northern Beaches? I'm in Killara, near Chatswood. Be good to know other owners nearby.

Hey Blue and Jim,

Can't help on the shipping details but letting you know another local RED user--although as I only recently ordered I'm months behind you guys. I'm in Newport, and would be keen to keep tuned in to any local shin-digs. And shipping advice!

You certainly can, thank you. Unfortunately however it sheds no light. I guess I'm kinda hoping that Red will offer a shipping solution. Heck why not, they have plenty of exerience shipping goods worldwide through Oakley.

Hi Jim. I've been reading posts for a while without writing in. However, I must have missed the posts that discuss import duty. Can you or anyone who knows the details let me know how I can get around import duty. When I rang customs they told me I would have to pay duty.

There is no import duty on Red because of US-Australia Free Trade Agreement. All Red needs to do is fill a simple form that the goods are made in US. The only thing you pay is clearance charges (~$100) plus GST.

Yes. I have a form somewhere, if you need it. I recently imported camera motion control gear and it was required for duty free import.

We were only charged clearance and GST. The GST hurt, but the ATO's pretty quick to refund.

Bear in mind if you fly over to collect the camera you cannot uplift at RED(maybe the policy has changed) and also you will pay California tax, that is unless you collect it in Nevada for example.

Hi Blue,
We received our first RED about 3 months ago and it arrives in about 30 boxes.
Very well packaged.
We did not pay freight on the first batch of gear. We got almost 2 of everything you can get. the only things that didn't turn up in the first shipment was the 50-150 and the EVF. I have the later now.
I pay for the freight on all the backordered stuff, but my first lot of gear turned up without us paying the freight bill. But we did pay 10% import tax (gst) as we all know it. You get that back of course.

Trust the RED/ FEDEX delivery system, its all good.
I don't think you can go to RED and pick your gear up anymore either.
Call your REP at RED. they will tell you straight away.

oh.... the camera phucking rocks!!!!.

No. Unless it is a one-off import of less than $1000 dollars.

You probably paid 10% GST, not duty. You get GST input credit. But, you do not need to pay any duty if it is made in US due to FTA with Australia.

Pawel, do you remember the name of that form to declare that the goods are made in the US? Just making sure my check list is all sorted to get things as smooth as possible.

G'day all. Was wondering if anyone has encountered any problems importing a RED and the FTA, as the document download listed above is pretty specific about the product being produced wholly in the USA.

From my memory of reading these threads, and seeing photos of the underside of the camera, I recall the label states its actually made in Singapore. Seems like a grey area to me and the duty issue actually may come down to the customs officer who is on duty when your RED comes through. Might be wrong .. just thinking out loud.

It's built in Singapore but for customs purposes it is a product of the USA.

I had my RED delivered about 4 weeks ago now.
My whole kit total was USD $42540 or there abouts. I paid about AUD $4812 in GST
I also paid about AUD$375 in duty, the reason being that not all the RED aluminum parts are manufactured in the US as i found out, most are made in SE Asia which automatically incurs 5% duty here in Australia.
So depending on how many of REDs extra bits and pieces you order, will depend on how much duty you pay.
There was no duty on the Camera body and LCD etc...

cheers

are you sure?? seems as though you may have got ripped , just referring back to what Cail said earlier that its still a US product for custom purpose Including the kit !....im going to have to look into this one , id rather fly over and get it if it works out to be cheaper in that case

Paul Moss

Khristian,
nope......didn't get ripped.......
The shipping list/commercial invoice that RED sends with the boxes, itemizes every single piece, and its country of manufacture.
yes i know about the FTA with the US, but if the item is not manufactured in the US then sadly its up for duty......
Whats $300 anyway, when your spending $40K......

Paul, did they list what items specifically had duty on them? I didn't get any duty charged on my order consisting of the Camera, base production pack, LCD, power pack, Red Drive, CF Cards, and Pelican Case (still waiting on my 18-50).

Well... okay I lied, I did get charged around $4 duty on... a Red T-Shirt!
