I'm an AC, I also DP and do G&E. I don't own a Red but I do own a pretty extensive HDSLR cinema style camera package and a small grip/lighting package.

Any suggestions on where to live? I'm potentially moving from Chicago to LA soon. I have some gear (about about 20k worth) so I want to live in a fairly safe area but not break the bank on rent. I don't really care about swimming pools and stuff like that. Need to have parking and be close to potential film and video shooting areas.

There was a good thread about this some time back. I'll try to locate.

LA is a big city. It has many little neighborhoods with their own vibe and culture. It really depends on what suits you. If you like city life, downtown might be appealing to you. If you are looking for a quieter place to live than you should look in the valley at neighborhoods like Sherman Oaks, North Hollywood, and Burbank. East LA has some really cool places to live... like Eagle Rock or Highland Park. The West side is usually too pricey, but if you can swing it places like Santa Monica is a nice place to be. Culver City is technically on the West Side, but more inland and more affordable. If you want to be close to Hollywood but not in Hollywood I would suggest Echo Park, Los Feliz or Silverlake.

My advice is to try and find some temporary housing until you get to know the city. There is a place in LA for everyone, if you are unhappy where you live you are just in the wrong neighborhood :) Its a great city, but it takes time to get to know her. You will soon realize where you like to be and where you don't. Good Luck!

I lived in Burbank for a couple years when I first got started in the industry and I'd highly recommend it. You are close to many of the major studios and there are many rental companies and smaller studios in the area as well, keeping resources close. It is also a lot quieter compared to being in the thick of LA, yet still close enough to it (depending on traffic of course ;) )
