Red would be ideal for something along the lines of a "Grand Prix" remake....?

Yeah!!! Wow, Jim should be proud of that one :-). Jarred, you have got to post us a shot of Jim op'ing Red, like that badass shot of him walking out of the fog toting his DSLR on the monopod.

I love the super wide scope, J-Scope :-)

I think it's a letter-boxed format, but it doesn't do parcel post.

How about this teaser from Jim?

We are not done... not by a long shot. We have so many surprises left for our customers that it is hard to contain the releases.

Its only for the internet... otherwise, you would need 3-5 plasma TVs to watch it in 4k.

it's a choice maybe. a revolution. shaking things up. WIDEMAX.

I have to admit the superwide format matches well to that particular subject matter! Maybe not as good a choice if it was a Mini-Cooper race, for example :). Scenic landscapes might do well too. I think it would be best with very wide lenses.

Hey I just had this insane thought. Imagine you are sitting in a theatre and instead of the screen just being in front of you it actually completely surrounds you. So its like you're sitting inside a huge ring. And the picture is such that you are perceptually inside the scene. I mean I know if you're into a good film if feels like that anyway but to have the action happening all around you not just audibly but also visually. Yeh I know...whacky!

Jarred. Where's your cam. Any chance of?

Theatre in the round or 360 (damn, can't find that degrees symbol!) has been with us for many years in various guises, at trade fairs and special venues with everything from multiple projectors to fisheye lens projection. I think the Red lends itself to this or similar kinds of use and Jim's format is an indication of this sort of application. Imagine it sideways depicting rock climbing on a huge vertical screen!

Walt Disney did that back in the 1960's. You are about 40 years late, Blue.

Hey Blue, go to EPCOT in Orlando, FL, USA. There you can view O Canada in CircleVision.

"In 2007 Disney updated the film "O Canada!" which was filmed in 1979. For seven years the Canadian Tourism Commission has been lobbying to have the movie updated. The government agency has for years reportedly received complaints from Canadians about the dated imagery and stereotypes (such as Canadians as lumberjacks). August 31, 2007 an updated edition opened, with about 50% new footage with Martin Short hosting the film." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada_%28Epcot%29

I thought all Canadians were lumberjacks.

but thats one long picture stitched together, wouldn't a camera or lens that can shoot 360º have to be implemented to create a true 3D surround system?

The version that ran until recently was an insult to Torontonians (and former Torontonians like me). In showing off Canada, it started in the east with beautiful scenes of Newfoundland and the maritimes, moved to Quebec City and Montreal, then basically skipped Canada's largest city (Toronto) and province (Ontario) and moved right to the prairies and the west.

About the only thing shown about Toronto was bagpipers marching at broken down exhibition stadium (torn down a couple of years ago) with the old Bulova Clock Tower in the background (torn down a couple of decades ago).

There are 360 degree systems out there. Just have to adapt to RED.

The reason though for a multi-camera/projector rig like CircleVision, as opposed to a camera pointed into a donut-ring mirror system like some still cameras use, is resolution - you get more resolution with multiple cameras' frames stitched together, which is important if the 360 screen will be large, like at Disneyland.

Nowadays you could digitally stitch together CircleVision-type footage into a seamless 360 image, (which is done sometimes for efx work to create a virtual background plate) but the other issue would be projecting it for an audience. You'd probably still need to line-up multiple projectors in some manner, or multiple monitors. The truth is that most 360 degree movies still have a "forward" view that the audience looks mainly at, just glancing around the sides now and then, and rarely, behind their backs.

I'm unsure why you wouldn't make the effort to have the optical centres of all the camera in the correct place.

Is that perhaps a mock-up and they don't want to show the magic ingredient..

Stadium advertising uses aspect ratios like this. I've had to deliver ads that were crazy wide and barely a few pixels tall. This isn't exactly the same but I can see it really opening new possibilities for content for those boards.
