Hey, I was wondering if anyone has any ideas about mounting M42 lenses on the RED? I was thinking about it the other night and there are a couple of them I'd love to try with it. I guess worst-case an M42 to Nikon adapter could be used on a Nikon mount, but I was wondering if there had been any news about a company making multiple mounts for the RED.

Oooh...see, that's what I'm talkin' about. There are some really interesting and quirky optics out there in M42. Things that bend light in ways that most guys with a test chart wouldn't dream of subjecting their RED to. But I can hardly wait. I see you're a few steps ahead of me. ;-)

... or you may even get away with doing some minor surgery at the back of the lens, depending what is there and how essential it is to the functioning of the lens. For instance, in some cases you might be able to put on a narrower aperture ring or some sort of small pin or level to adjust aperature.
I was actually thinking of this with a m42 bellows to do some macro work. I doubt I'd use anything like this on a big gig with clients on set, but it could be fun to play with.

Right you are Mr. Jackson. To some people the Pentax name was considered a lower class of performance then the "OTHER" two brands but they made some of the finest still camera lenses out there both in 35mm and medium format sizes. Something the "OTHER" two did not do. By the way what is that camera in your avatar?

Heh...that's an old Kovas 1M, which is pretty much a direct copy of an Eclair Cameflex. Pretty cool old camera. It had been given to the North Koreans by the Soviets in 1967 and hadn't ever been unpacked. It was still wrapped in tissue paper when I got it. Has that horrible Soviet camera smell. I guess it was some kind of anti-fungal stuff they sprayed in the case at the factory. Instantly recognizable scent. Great little camera, though, with mags that (while short) can be changed instantly with no threading. I use it for hand-cranked footage. Those cameras came with an electric motor, but they were issued to the cameraman for life, so they also issued a spring-driven motor in case the electric motor failed and a hand-crank in case the spring-driven motor failed. "Get the shot, Comrade."

Ah yes, Pinko Commie Cam. I knew it wasn't a CM3, but as you say it bears resemblance.

tah,
They weren't big on funding their own R&D. You never know, they may have a copy of the RED One coming out before long. It will just smell a lot different.

Ahahaha,
They were good at copying all kinds of stuff. Some of it quite good. You can't say they ever underbuilt. The LOMO (Leningrad Optical Mechanical something or other) was and I think still is one of the priemer Optical plants anywhere. They had a little help there though with those Zeiss enginners they captured after WW2.

I had a Kinor 35H and a set of Lomo primes. Most of them were T1.5 or T1.6 and really pretty fine lenses. The Kinor was nice, too. A real tank, though. Weighed as much as a microwave oven. Not something you'd want to do a lot of run-and-gun with unless you like big purple bruises on your shoulders. Of course, the RED looks a little chunky when it's all decked-out, too. The "Revolution" is apparently going to wait a while on a flyweight doc-cam. ;-)

Yeah but in the USSR they had big strong manly men. Not mention those corn fed women working out on the collective.

HA!
I've seen the 20-120mm zoom before and it's pretty huge. Haven't seen the 25-500mm. I imagine it's massive.
I have this little shoulder pod that I bought from Cinerent in Zurich. I've used it quite a bit with 16mm shooting. I tried to use it with the Kinor and it reminded me of how they strap the shuttle on top of a 747. It works, but it makes me nervous. Heh...the locking nuts all seemed a little less snug than usual and the whole thing was kind of wobbly. And even with the padded shoulder rig I had bruises every time I used it.
