View Full Version : Sports Venue - Flourescent Flicker

So, I've been asked to shoot some basketball events in an arena and I have to shoot much of the time in the back hallways and in the tunnels with the athletes. The problem is that it's all lit by flourescents. I'm also shooting overcranked, (only like, 48-60fps), but I'm having a hard time avoiding the 'flicker'.

Is there a handy dandy shutter speed chart that can act as a reference so that I can sync my camera with the lights, or is it just trial and error? Additionally, the lights illuminating the court flicker at a different rate. I've dialed it in out there (180 degree shutter) but I can't seem to dial it in right in the hallways.

Any thoughts? I'd love any help.

I've already shot one game, and the flicker is (kind of) acceptable seeing as everything is meant to feel raw, but boy, I'd like to find a way around it.

Thanks!

I'll have to try this out. Thanks!

The red may have some issues that aren't exactly the same, but in theory these speeds should be safe. They should at least give you a place to start.

Thanks man, that chart worked like a charm. Do you, or does anyone know how to remove flicker from footage? Is that even possible?

I've had some success using virtual dub and msu-deflicker. Works well on timelapses too.
