Very nice: Only thing that bothers me a bit is how burnt the window in the "cake" viral is. Didn't you have ND gels for the windows?
Would you say in your experience that the dynamic range was good?

Hilarious commercials!

Athough some shots were a bit soft and went out of focus (sometimes it disturbed me a bit) and I think they could use some color correction to make it more pop out.

But very nice! REally funny!

The room for the cake clip was 2 stories up. No time or budget for ND's. 3 spots shot on one day.

they have to be specs...don't think you can get away with "using" kids for such profane things in this country anymore, but yeah, they were great :-)

They're not specs. They're viral. A lot of companies are doing this now, saying and doing things you could never get away with on the old ancient TV.

I love these ads by the way. This is def my favorite stuff shot with the Red so far.

Sorry if it's a stupid question (English isn't my native tongue either so), but what is spec and what is viral in the context you guys talking about?

Thanks,

First ad is the best commercial I have seen in MONTHS! 2nd one needs work. Can't have a weak punchline with the kid tugging at the camera.

Maybe a baseball bat to dads nuts and then walk off? :):):)

Sidderke,

"Spec" is generally a spot made without permission or endorsement from the client or ad agency. Usually done for the reel of a production company, or young director.

"Viral" has come to mean a spot that plays outside of the normal TV/Cinema channels. The term comes from videos that get passed around on the internet because they are entertaining, not because they are forced on people.

Really well done. The director did a great job. The performances and timing were best built in the "Sponge" spot. The Photographer one could have used a little bit more - more incescent snapshots from the dad to provoke the kid and a bigger and quicker reaction from the kid himself - maybe a close up on his face when he grabs the camera and another insert of the camera smashing itself might be nice (also if the camera was smashed on concrete and not on grass).

Overall, though, GREAT job. Really fantastic. I can see these catching on real quick.

Rocket can you tell us how some of these scenes were lit? Specifically, photographer?

I really like the muted color scheme and soft lighting.

I really like the muted color scheme and soft lighting.

'Photographer' was lit by the great HMI in the sky.

The shoot was done by a very small crew and the interiors were minimal lighting.
Graded from dpx output into Baselight.

Only ND filters were used to keep the stop constant. Running between T1.4 1/2 - T2.8 1/2

Great looking shots, concept+execution. The edit could be tightened though, a bit faster in delivering the punchlines. Why not an insert closeup of the game's case in the kid's hands?
Hats off to the reckless abandon of directing children to swear, kick, destroy property, grope breasts, etc.. good work

Hey Ben, nice to see you here, I hear that you're the Red AC on the ground in Auckolofa. Shame you didn't end up coming to Norfolk.

What are your impressions of the thing so far?

To add on to this, the term "viral" was actually coined due to its rapid spreading on the internet, sort of like how a virus spreads in the body. You can have a one video made in Texas and be seen in all other 49 states, plus separate countries in a matter of hours. Viral videos are an entertainment disease.

We did the final post on these spots. The production company did the conversions from R3D to 2k Log DPX and supplied to us with the DPX's, so unfortunately I have no idea how much extra latitude we could have pulled from the raw as a separate pass.

I believe the commercials are to air on NZ's Playboy + other R18+ SKY channels.

Definitely the funniest TVCs I've worked on this year

Satellite pay TV. After seeing the first episode of Californication on FTA, I don't think Nintendo have much to worry about...

and throws up a protest at a WalMart...
I guess these are for Australia?

All the kids talk like that in Australia so the ads wouldn't be shocking enough.

These are for the New Zealand market.

Where did you get Australia from?

Awesome. I loved the grading and look. It had that perfect 70s 16mm BBC feel to it.

Only thing that I didn't quite like was after the girl in one of the spots handed him his present she quickly ran off and sat down so when the camera cuts back to the wideshot instead of her waiting sort of anxiously for acknowledgement she has just vanished into thin air.

Just saw the sponge spot air on G4 "Attack of the Show"...I noticed it immediately, 1st time I see RED material being broadcasted even though it was youtube quality via a standard def channel but I suppose this is the nature of viral marketing. Either way congrats. :)
