I've been using the RED 300 extensively since August 31...without a matte box. I use a UV filter on the lens to protect the glass, and the lens has an internal filter tray for screw on 42mm filters. I bought several 42mm ND filters for insertion into the removable tray. I've shot in a wide variety of lighting conditions using the 42mm filters, with excellent results. In view of that, for mobile work with the RED 300 I don't intend to use a matte box. I keep a foldable filter pack with the ND filters in my jacket packet or cargo pants pocket. Replacing a filter in the tray takes about 5 seconds. The lens itself comes with a nice lens hood.

BTW - I like the RED 300. The images are crisp and its well made. I've very happy with it.

Thanks Gibby, I didn't realize that it had a filter tray, good news.

Gibby,

Which UV filter are you using? Do you have one on the 18-50mm as well?

On both the 300 and 18-50 I use good quality multi-coated screw on UV filters when no ND is needed...Hoya and Tiffen. The 18-50 doesn't have an internal filter tray like the 300. It takes a 72mm screw on filter. For real mobile work with the 18-50 I've been using a wide assortment of screw on ND filters, and when none are needed, a UV filter. Again...Hoya and Tiffen. I'm looking for a good lightweight clip on matte box to use on the 18-50 to keep the weight and size down.
