wow. That first picture with the sun in it. Still so much detail in the stones.
what build firmware do you use?
It doesnt seem to do the black spot in bright areas, like the sun.

Ah. Careful with that one ;)
All cams in my neighbourhood have gone back to 8 as 9 has got a bad reputation. Hope you brought 8 with you on CF?

Thank you...
We had "recoding error" issue few times, other than that it was trouble free. It can get hot...! This is a good month to shoot in India; April - July will be tough.

Build 9's update, version 1.5.1 has no recording errors from what i've seen as of yet, spent an entire day shooting on it and it was problem free, atleast with the cam we were shooting on.

We have been shooting w/ 1.51 for several days and it is very solid.

Build 9's stability seems to vary greatly on the camera body you're using. It's much more solid on batch 3 cameras than batch 1 and 2... but I know one person's batch 2 that was heavily reworked by RED that build 9 runs flawlessly on. So who knows?

Overall the camera is quite stable... We have a major shoot/test coming up next week; will be good to see how it does.

Interesting thought Brook. You would assume hardware would be the same for cameras 1-100 to aid firmware roll out. With all hardware being equal it would be faster in tracking down bugs and issuing a cure all patch to all 100 cameras.
Maybe the recall of cameras 1-100 will mean a base hardware standard will be established prior to rolling out cameras 101+?

This is all as far as I know. It could be purely coincidence.
I can tell you that the bodies are certainly not the same. For example, I'm not quite sure how one would gain access to the winter strips on a 1-50 body... whereas it's easy on a 51-100 body.
I don't know if the differences between batches are only skin deep.

I don't know if it's true now, but I know one major mfr. of FPGAs (and there aren't that many) had some issues with some of their chips that would only show up with certain firmware loads. Their testing had missed it but the product my company was making exposed the problem. It was difficult to get them to admit the problem, but eventually they made a change that fixed it in their newer chips, but as far I know they did not inform anyone of the "fix" (maybe then have to admit the problem.) So just FYI, stuff like that can happen, and it's not all within Red's control or even awareness maybe. Also, the "big" chip customers (1000s of units a month) get better treatment generally than the little guys.

Camera performance is expected to be the same across all in-the-field cameras

Winter strips are little filter strips that hide behind two access panels in the cooling area of cameras batch 3+ cameras. You remove one allen key per access panel and one phillips screw per filter to remove the strips.
As far as I can tell, they simply offer filtration to keep gunk out of the cooling area of the camera. Airflow is significantly increased by removing them, so I imagine that there is a significant boost in the efficiency of the cooling system with them removed.

When I installed build 9 on #17, the camera locked up about 5-10 times before I was able to get deep enough into the menus to put build 8 back on. The menu/screen on the back of the camera stopped accepting input. Your post got me curious, thinking it might've been gremlins, so I gave it another go - same bugs.
That said, it was quite smooth on a 3rd batch camera that I had it on the other day. I've also heard that it's quite reliable on Dino's #31 [which I've heard is somehow different internally than other cameras?] and I've read the posts in the help section that show some people are having pretty good luck with it.
You'd certainly know better than I would - like I said, it was all just as far as I know. My experience with build 9 has been shaky enough at this point to keep it out of production environments [as recommended on the support site].
If you say the cameras are the same, I completely retract my speculation and apologize for giving anybody the wrong idea. I blame gremlins or luck on the bugs I've hit.
I will say that I have not had enough time with 1.51 to feel comfortable commenting on it.
The camera's working for the next few days, but when I get some down time with it I'll do a bug hunt report for you.

Brook, are you talking about 1.5.0 or 1.5.1?
1.50 had issues, but 1.51 is solid...we tried to crash it and couldn't.

Ive worked with both batch 2 and 3 cameras and found that the batch 3 cam had some errors, and the batch 2 cam ran flawless on 1.5.1.
The batch 3 cam had image anomalies during recording..... Half of the frame was green, then blue, or had blue pixelaton throughout the frame, it was very odd. I began to think that it was being caused by high contrast situations, bit it was all too similar to the errors that were found in builds 1-3.
Brook Willard
11-11-2007, 04:34 PM
I must assume as a result that the batch distinctions are irrelevant... that there must be some other variable that we're not seeing.
For what it's worth, I just put 1.51 on the camera and couldn't crash it. I didn't get to try and crash it in my usual way [high frequency overexposure], but I'm much happier with 1.51 than I was with 1.50.
I'll have a pocket full of SD cards tomorrow.

I definitely thinks it's a situational occurence based on the way REDcode handles different lighting scenarios.

High frequency (detail) with overexposure induced codec error was fixed by Build 8 v1.3.6, and hence it is in any later builds too.
BETA Build 9 v1.5.1 is more stable than v1.5.0 - we had a bug introduced by on-camera Playback, so I'd personally run 1.3.6 or 1.5.1

I had a shoot this past week in which the B cam had a split screen effect (half green or blue frame) much like if not exactly like that which was found in build 1-3.
Both A cam and B had v1.5.1 installed. A cam was absolutely problem free.
If I remember correctly, the problem occured when the camera was pointed at a blown out window with the remainder of the frame having both solid blacks and a mid exposure to it.
I'll try and get the files to you.

There are several facilities that are working on test... This will be the first project in India so producers will wait and see how this will workout . The team that is executing this is probably one of the most respected one in the country.

I am shooting allover India, the first pics u see are shot in Bombay. You have to deal with the local conditions... and it was not that bad.
Also a technology like this will have an significant impact on a market like India; which produces the maximum number of film in the world ever year.

The "winter strips" we not supposed to be installed in 51-100, rather put in the box with an explanation. Not only are they a filter, but they restrict the amount of airflow (cold air) into the camera... thereby keeping the camera warmer. We will have "summer strips" pretty soon that you can install in hot and dusty conditions. Airflow is minimally restricted but the filters do a good job of keeping crap out of the body. Please don't ask "when?". We'll make them available when they are finished.
