You beat me to it... I have asked around about Panther heads and have yet to receive any feedback. I just figured no one was using them. I put my hands on one way back in November at AbelCineTech and it felt friggin awesome. Considering the price though maybe it would be better to stick to a well known like OConnor.

Jim, Great picture thanks for sharing.

LOL! But when are you going to shoot something locked-down that shows how the codec holds up shooting a still life portrait under controlled lighting? Until I see that I will think you are hiding something.:p

Who else would think of shooting drag racing to pre-empt the "when will we see some motion" crowd?!

Jim, Great picture thanks for sharing.

Is an O'Connor 1030HD much cheaper? I'm having a hard time finding a price, but I recall a price of around 5k vs 5.6k for the Panther. Anybody have experience with both of these? Or are you just considered there is so little feedback on Panther heads. Have they just started making heads and tripods?

Red crew, how did you like using a Panther head?

No EVF or LCD visible... no MB or FF... and plenty of big 'ol cables hanging out the back. I'd love to see Frankie's smart side.

I do wonder though, don't you guys have a more recent proto to shoot with? I don't mean to criticize, but I thought there were supposed to be a small number of prototypes in testing right now and I find it surprising you're still shooting with Frankie. What about Spike, and are there others? Were you shooting with other cams?

Did anybody in the media pit come up and ask what the hell kind of camera you were using?

I know one guy in the media pit who didn't have to come up and ask what kind of camera they were using...me. I was contracted by MATCO to shoot several cars at the same event. I shot everywhere...pits, starting line, runs, etc. I was seriously undergunned compared to Team RED...I used a Z1 supplied by my client.

When you shoot footage right next to that much horsepower lighting off you just can't believe the energy released! (lots of people next to the track get the same expression as Ted when Funny Cars launch!)

Fun stuff...and good to see Jim again...

P.S. - I may be biased, but Jim's Funny Car had the best paint job and graphic package of any car I saw at the event! Why doesn't that surprise me...

http://www.bealecorner.com/D30/misc/camera-angle-trig.png

If you wanted to spend enough time & money on it, I think you could maintain focus (at least in theory- not sure how practical this is.) Assuming the camera is a fixed distance "d" from the track, AND you can pan the camera to keep the car in the frame, AND the car stays on the track, you can calculate the required focus distance "l" just by knowing distance "d" and the camera pointing angle "theta". So you use an encoder measuring the camera pan angle, a microcontroller to do the math, and a servo system to pull focus.

If it is difficult to pan with the car by hand, maybe that part could be automated as well, but you'd have to make some assumptions about car performance, or have other real-time measurements. Just a thought.

Ok, I was not aware of that! If you've got a fixed focal length lens, maybe you could mount a separate spotting scope on top? (true optical viewfinder :-) If you're at a safe distance, the parallax should not be an issue. In the future when you do have a real-time live viewscreen, I assume you could keep a pan on track, for at least some distance.

At least you guys are "down" enough to call them rods--haven't quite figured out where the majority of folks on video boards got the idea to call them "rails" but it wouldn't be the first time I've seen a herd mentality to randomly rename tried-and-true terminology.

He CP.. TJ Here

Didn't you notice every thing here is red. oops I mean RED....

I think the RED camera is a very big digital SLR with a hard drive on back thus when mounting a large lens... as in still photography the lens is mounted on the head and the camera hangs off the back...

Their design idea seems to be that everything including the camera body will hang on the rods....thus rails???

This is the first camera that I have felt is styled right to put on the Alien...

Charles Papert
02-18-2007, 11:36 PM
Hi TJ--

It's not so much a RED or RED-hopeful-user thing--I see "rails" used a lot referring to 15mm rods for DV cameras and matteboxes, as well as those equipped with various 35mm adaptors etc. I just haven't figured out where it started, is all.

by the way, aren't we supposed to "forget" the name "Alien" in lieu of "AR"...?

Jarred Land
02-18-2007, 11:40 PM
most likely because the camera rides between upper and lower rods.. hence, riding in rails. Rods or Rails or Rails or Rods... everyone knows what everyone is talking about.
