The first of 13 online exclusive LOST webisodes are up on abc.com. Check it out.
For anyone who's seen them, any idea what they're shot on? The DOF is way too wide to be 35mm and the low latitude characteristics make me think it's digitally shot. Also, there's not enough natural contrast and dark shadows in the image for it to be film, unless it's heavily tweaked film(though I don't know why they'd want to tweak something and make it look LESS like film).
If anyone knows any more about this or if I'm wrong let me know. I think the idea that they're shooting these on a mini production budget is really cool for some reason.
cheers,

Yeah, probably HVX. That doesn't bother me as much as the inconsistent lighting. There's harsh sun shadows on Christian's face from Jack's perspective, but once the coverage flips, it's like they're both under a parasol.

Wow you're right that looks like 60i maybe HDV or worse. You think they would have at least sprung for an HVX200 with a Redrock. That's like one of the most profitable shows on TV right now. Also the regular writers and directors are kinda missed...

no, that definitely looks like 24p by my eye, but they agreeably could have used SOME sort of adapter.
I do like though that they're willing to take such a well respected show and make an online exclusive mini series. I look at this and say, "hello future." http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/images/smilies/beer.gif

Is there something special to do to watch it? I can't get the video to start. It is kind of stuck on the "Your video is loading..." splash screen. Or is it only working for people in the States, just like their full episodes?

Indeed, the fact that this is the future is precisely why the writers are on strike, because they don't get paid for web content -- in other words, the studios want them to go unpaid in the future.
Those who want to support the writers might do so by boycotting webseries such as these. I don't watch LOST so I wouldn't watch it anyway. Just saying.
Why cant they make money on web series?... I would guess the contrary in the future. Say if you can pay a small fee for a quality episode downloaded from the web it may reduce alot of the illegal downloading thats going on. And thus prevent great series forced to be taken of the air on channels only half of us have.
I thought the writers where on strike becasue of low payment and harsh conditions, not by web aired series...

Oh no, don't get me wrong. The STUDIOS have found plenty of ways to make money off webisodes, and they're only going to get better at monetizing the internet as they go.
The issue is that they're refusing to share any of that money with the writers, most of whom live off residuals (i.e. royalties) in the months or years they may go between jobs. If the studios refuse to pay residuals on internet content, when internet content becomes the ONLY content, most writers won't be able to afford to stay in the business.

Yeah, that's a standard misconception. The actual fact of it isn't that the writers want to get paid more, it's that the studio wants to pay them less, including nothing at all for internet distribution, and the writers are just trying to maintain their current rates.
(Okay, they do want to get paid more on DVD, but only because the studios promised them a raise 20 years ago and never made good on that.)

Here's what Jenna Fischer(Pam) from the Office has to say about the strike and why it's necessary:
Let's say you write a movie script and you sell it for $100,000...that's GREAT money! Your movie gets made and yada yada. You start churning away writing more scripts. But it takes you 4 years before you sell your next script. That $100,000 windfall is now stretched to $25,000 a year for 4 years. (And, I'm not even counting the 30% that goes to taxes and 25% to your agent/manager.) If during that 4 years they sell your movie on DVD or run it on Pay-per-view you get little residual checks for $1,000 here or $2,500 there. That money is essential for getting by. This scenerio is what the majority of writers, actors and directors in Hollywood face. You have a few flush years and then a big drought.
