View Full Version : Lensbians

My wife is fed up with me. I'm on the computer day and night trying to decide if I should use my Canon lenses or invest in Cine RPP etc.
She called me a 'Lensbian' in that I only have eyes for lenses right now.
Has she created a new term? How many 'Lensbian's' are out there? Maybe we could get together for some Lensbian on Lensbian nights - talking about glass and stuff.
I could put an advert on here if that helps: Lensbian seeks similar minded Lensbians?
So.... what is your take on Canon glass with Epic? Any Epic users want to share their experience?

Go with Cine RPP.

That's funny. I love new words.
Depends if you're shooting only for yourself and want more versatility/speed or if you want to be able to rent and do things the "standard" way.

It's purely for me. There's just that amazing pull I'm feeling towards expensive cine glass! It's really strong. I have enough put aside for the Epic (stage 4) and about 3 RPP but then I might put that money into other support gear. I think good glass is for life and as I'm hitting the big 40 this year I want to invest in my future before it's too late.
I thought the term 'Lensbian' was funny too. What's even funnier is that she called me it with a completely straight face - she was actually a bit cross with me :)

You might just want to hold off...
Depending on what you shoot, the auto focus/iris capability of EPIC might be important to you, or it might be irrelevant.
If it's not irrelevant, wait and see what the new RED electronic primes/zooms look like. I'd be surprised if we don't know more after NAB; that's only 3 weeks now.
If you think it is irrelevant, you might change your mind after trying it :-)
Or maybe you'll finally decide that this tips the balance in favour of Canon.

I'm pretty sure the canon mount hasn't been released for epic yet

Obviously ... Epic hasn't been released yet.
The Epic-M units out there are effectively beta cameras- like the early R1's and the early Epic "Tattoo" program.
I expect that when X ships it will have Nikon and Canon electronic mounts, with at least basic functionality. (i.e focus and iris by electronic "manual" control.)
Supply may be another issue though.

David , unless you truly NEED the cine lens mechanical functionality for focus pulling, rapid setups, etc in the high pressure cine environment - you can't go wrong with L glass. I and my customers have very extensive experience with Canon on the Red1 and I don't know any that aren't VERY happy with the results - and it makes even more sense as we move to larger sensors and autofocus capability. Keep the cash and buy more support gear or bank it so you can upgrade to a FF35 monstro sensor when it's available - then you'll NEED the L glass.

If you want the best of both worlds, get a set of Zeiss ZFs and have them cinevised by Duclos. Gives great images, comparable to RPPs or even ultra primes, but the mechanics aren't quite as good.
Will cost about $6,000 for a full set, but compared to $20k+ a pretty good compromise.

an "amazing pull" is what I feel for any machinery that I get busy with: hasselblad, electric guitars and amps (at one point my wife suspected I loved my guitar more than my family), red one and epic, and I've decided just to stick to my set of leica still lenses; "amazing pull" is probably part of your character, and may have little to do with the rpp's :)
And, in answer to another post, but linked to the above: I suspect all Lensbians are trapped in male bodies

If you need lenses, now is a good time to buy IMHO.
With the F3 and AF-100 out, the Epic and Scarlets on their way and all the double sets going to the 3D productions, I guess lenses will again grow scarse and expensive towards the end of this year.
RPPs are very good. Unique Optics seems to be very good, too - and if you get a god set of "cinema" Optica Elites, they can be very good too.

Sure, but if he spent ALL those money on the Leicas, he'd have to starve for a year or two while awaiting delivery... :-)
The reason I didn't mention Masters/S4/Ultras as an alternative, was basically because they didn't seem in the price-range the OP was suggesting...

You fail to mention the Illumina lenses. They have been consistently sold out since major improvements have been made since their introduction. In addition to their optical qualities at T1.3 across the board they are light weight, perfectly suited to the Af-100 series.
The Illuminas will be at NAB - booth C8247.

Thank you for all your input. It's a harder choice than I thought.
It's just good to know that I can call on a bunch of Lensbians day or night for advice.
Okay, I think the joke is now well used - I'll try and stop. I just really like the word. Wonder if we could get it into the English dictionary?

Out of curiosity, what is the difference between the Illuminas and Elites?

There's maybe one thing you should remember. Even if Canon L lenses are really great, they are still lenses, so not originally made for video.
I have plenty of Canon L and nikon lenses, that I'll keep, for sure. But If I had an Epic, I'd probably go for 17-50 RPZ and 2 or three RPP's OR the wonderful Zeiss CP2's.

I don't if there really is any one answer to this though. Its difficult if you are split with your work type like I am. Film work is usually in block and in controlled environments and I cine lenses are the lens of choice and the RPP's without being fanboyish are an excellent set to own. I sadly don't own but then I don't need to technically as I just ask for them during the work-up. More work I do is TV/Nature or Doco work and in that case light and fast is better. RPP's would likely not be my choice. I think you have to balance out what you do and what would suit more.
Until RED came along I would always rent everything for bigger paid gigs. Now the world has slightly changed. High grade gear was within a possible monetary bracket to own.

Hi, another Lensbian here. I think I will keep my Canon glass for still photography, and its nice to have the option to use it on the epic as well. But like many here, I plan to jump into the world of cine glass soon. Seem to be lots of great options for affordable prime sets and wide/normal zooms. But what about fast, affordable tele zooms? Something along the lines of a 70-200 2.8? Is the Red 50-150 any good?

I too am a Lensbian.
We should be understood, not shunned by our other halves :) LOL
I'm currently still explaining that emails sent about 'Angie' referred to an Angie 20-120 I picked up recently...
My other half saw this thread title and laughed in a scary 'knowing' way and said - "at least you're not a LomoSexual..."
Ahem - if only she know about my hidden stash of Squarefronts... and primes... and arghh... that's it - just realised, I must have a severe case of ALD (Antique Lens Disorder)!

I have decided to wait until I get my hands on my Epic before I buy. I was seriously considering the Illuminas for their size, weight and speed. But the more I think about the possibilities that might open up from the touch to focus, REDMOTE Pro, etc, the more I am thinking about the Nikon G series 1.4 lenses. If I become a Nikkor-philiac, it doesn't make me a bad Lomo-sapien.
