Just saw this post now. I'm in NYC. Can't wait to get the camera sometime soon. Hopefully, I'll be able to put it to good use, both for my own projects and for rental to others. I think it's definitely wise for us RED users in the NY area to keep in touch. I look forward to seeing who else is nearby!

I see that I may be the last one to get my RED in the area. I wish I had at least a basic idea when mine will ship.
Whether it's cameras, crew, ideas etc, it would be great to have the option of pooling resources if needed.
I'm all for forming a Red "brigade" in the NY area.

Hey Offhollywood guys, have you shut off your FTHD station forever? I heard you guys switched over to Scratch.
Will you be offering 4k conforms and DI for Red Projects?

we are 100% SCRATCH now - it ROCKS!
yes, our plan is 4K all the way - also in the home streach of financing a NORTHLIGHT FILM SCANNER as well - and we will be doing 4K DI's from super-16 + 35mm and going after 4K re-mastering -

Nice. I'll definitely be in touch with you guys once we start the pre-pro for our next feature, sometime in 2008. By that time, I'm hoping all sorts of 4K grading workflows will have been established and tested.
Very exciting times ahead!

Honestly, I am thinking we won't see that many units immediately. I am sort of hoping to see the thing in person at NAB or see some evidence of a production unit in the field with another DP like Dave Stump before I plunk down the rest of my cash. I am confident this thing is gonna come through based on what we've seen so far. I just want to be sure.

But I understand that we are buying into a work in progress, and am willing to wait for it to get here when it's ready.

I'm in the Berkshires, MA. About half-way between NYC and Boston. I'm looking to rent out my RED from the time I get it (July probably) until the end of the year. RAW port included, but no flash options, RED-RAM, or EVF. I will have all the other accessories though.

I'm in the NYC area with #344... I'm guessing June/ July?
offhollywood, let me know when you guys get yours... I'd love to learn what I can before mine arrives, especially with regards to workflow (which you guys seem to have all figured out).
Anybody going to go to NAB? What about flying out to Red when your number is up, to pick up the baby? It's hard to get an idea of what accessories to get and what the learning curve will be, long distance.
Cheers,
Harry

I'm in NYC, too. I figure that there have got to be enough of us here with reservations to warrant some kind of showing here in the near future. Aren't there any trade shows coming up, like DV expo or maybe a presentation at the Tribeca film festival or something. I dunno.

Me, too. You guys sound like you've got a great set-up over there at offhollywood. I just happened across an article about you guys on the Abel website a while back and didn't realize until later that it was you posting here. I know that you've already said that you'll let us know when you've got the cameras and have a "christening" party and all that, but just so that you know that there is interest...

I grew up in Hell's Kitchen and it's still my favorite neighborhood, but I live right between Washington Heights and Harlem, and I always say I'm from Harlem proper 'cause of the "street cred" it gives me...hahaha But don't expect to be writing any urban tragedies to shoot with my RED. I wish I could, but it's impossible for me 'cause growing up, I saw too many foreign films, especially french, and I read too much Shakespeare and Robert Frost. I think most of the movies I make are gonna be in the so called "chick flick" category...hahaha, which brings me to this question: Those of you who'll be writing your own stuff, what kind of movie genres will you be making?

I'm rolling with Nikons, with basic production package underneath, with a redrock followfocus and their new mattebox. I'm still looking at tripod options, and I'm going to wait until the day my camera is in the mail to buy a macbook pro.
My lenses'll be
17-35 2.8
28-75 2.8
80-200 2.8
50mm 1.8
and maybe a 60mm macro 2.8

Am located in Manhattan. Scheduled for Red ser.#941 probably shipping in September. Very curious to know how people in the New York area are configuring their cameras (lens, hard drives, rails, batteries, etc.). Interested in hearing the pros and cons of various configurations. Want to make films (got a better word for this?) with Red that can compete with features I’ve shot on film in the past. From what I’ve seen picture quality will compete easily. Primarily work as a director/writer so I’m not a big techy. Any impute would be greatly appreciated.

You and I are thinking alike. I'm going with the Nikons too. That's nice ammo you got there. I've been scouring New York for good bargains. I'm rolling totally ghetto when it comes to lenses. I'm just getting cheap lenses that I know to be great from experience and from having compared their performance with the supposedly "great ones" out there. So far I've got:
*17-35 f/2.8
*28-85 AF f/3.5
*35-70 f/2.8
*85 f/2
*100 f/2.8
I've still got more to buy. I have my eye on the 70-300 f4-5.6
RedRockmicro Follow focus and Mattebox look like the right choice for me too. Although, I'm considering getting the GearDear mattebox-why not? That's how ghetto my rig will be...hahaha I now use a Cartoni Tripod (22 lbs. capacity) and will keep it if it works well with the Red.

This sounds exactly like my package as well. I'll use the RED LCD, the basic production rails, and a whole lot of practice to get the focusing right.

Hey all, not in New York, but moving to DC (no D.C user group?).
I'll have two RED's 509 & 646, sticking to Nikon lenses and basic production packages for now. Will be renting them out.
Mainly work on Nature/Science docs. Focus could be fun on wildlife.

We're planning on putting the RED through a real world production and will be documenting the entire process on www.projectred.net

Greetings!
Brooklyn (Park Slope!) here and I just placed my order!
I will be one of the last ones to get the rig but look forward to meeting up with you all and helping out in any way I can, perhaps tying some resources together and help get through the learning curve of 4k workflow as well.
I am working on a screenplay now so I have something ready to roll to put this beast into action when she arrives. (REDONE is a she?)
like many here I also have been very satisfied with the results of Nikons on my Redrock + HVX combo. I plan to strip both the Redrock FF and the Chroziel mattebox from my HVX to my RED, anyone have an idea if this will work with the RED 18-55mm?
Please dont hesitate to call or email me...no I should rephrase this, Who ever gets there RED 1st better make a party out of it! Take care fellows,
Now I must take my wife to the park before I start seeing Red people!

hey there NYC RED folks,
i had not found this user group until recently as life has been very busy, and i have tended to look for hard news about the gear when on this site.
i had written a long and probably off topic message that you will be happy i lost when looking for a reference in this thread.
i have #923 hopefully shipping in december, and am only unhappy that i did not get wind of RED until november of last year.
it is a pretty unique opportunity when an experienced industrial design group says to the end user group, "hey we are going to advance several generations beyond the status quo of this product, making it elite, but have grass roots pricing, do you want to participate.?"
now that we are to shortly see the fruits of RED's labor luckliy i am free for a little time and would like to participate. should any of you be meeting together or organizing test shoots etc. fill free to send an email to me.
thank you,
ray.

Hello New Yorkers and visitors.
I wanted to introduce myself. I am a bi-coastal DP who knows an awful lot about RED. I worked at the RED booth at the first NAB so I have been part of the RED extended family since the very early days.
I was involved in the OffHollywood shoot, so I've already shot with the cameras. Full Disclosure: I was not THE DP on the Offhollywood stunt car shoot. That was Paul McCarthy. I operated a few shots for Paul: all the HandHeld from inside the cars, as well as a riding crane shot. Otherwise I shot the stills for OffHollywood:
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=4206
I did shoot a couple shots myself on Saturday and will do my best to stay involved with early testing. If any other RED owners want to hire me to shoot their features, commercials or music videos, or any early reservation holders want to do tests together, feel free to get in touch. I know OffHollywood is busy with lots of other people & projects, so it's not like I can get my hands on their cameras whenever I want.
I have also shot with the Viper and been a panelist at NAB, so I know a lot about all this fancy new camera stuff.
Check out my website.

Ok , your mic system seems to have a possible nice implementation with the red and I would love to hear it in action and test it on my daw using your plugins, but Being an audio engineer myself the thing that gets me freaking out on your website is your mentioning about a possible interference pickup due to the unbalanced wiring.
If you aknowledge this already it must be that it's very sensitive to this kind of situations or what???

As with any unbalanced mic, if you keep the unbalanced part short and use a balanced snake if you need long runs, there's no problem with picking up interference. All the unbalanced cables are well-shielded.
We use an ETS InstaSnake PA200 (http://www.etslan.com/) for long runs and it works great.

Is there anyone with one in NJ or in NYC who can volunteer to let us try a TetraMic with it?
We'd love to play with your toys.

I'm a Brooklyn based editor, cut at home on FCP. Psyched to be in preproduction on a feature to be shot on the RED this fall. I'm interested in hearing the trials and tribulations of other people as far as workflow, method, pitfalls, and kismet discoveries.

time for graduation starts.
this is 1740.
I live on lower 5th ave. in manhattan, I saw somebody shooting in washington sq park today for nyu graduation event around 5pm (real grad-event move to Yankee stadium this year, cause for SQ's renovation).
Guy had an Ocorner 2060, no matte box and wearing CMF logo on black T-shirt.
I was in hurry, so could not introduce myself, who are you?
I am in New York, I just got #1740 and I like to get together another RED owners to exchange info's. I'm taking out my 1740 to Japan, but before, I like to spend a time to know the RED tricks.
cheers!

Hey MuffinNY,
I see that..
I really can't wait to have my unit...
Hello,
Had a good time this Memorial Day. I picked up some Zeiss ZF lenses from B&H (the Macro 100mm F2 and the 50mm F1.4) and walked around the East Village shooting different light tests with my friend. Amazing how many people actually recognized the camera and stopped to ask us what we were up to.
I suppose with three REDs on Avenue A a couple of blocks apart it wouldn't be too far out of the realm of oddity.
The setup is below. Now we're just waiting on the EVF, Redrock Mattebox, Redrock follow focus and the Birger mount. Excellent!
Oh.. and build 16.
Best!

I'm a producer from Kosovo, and I'm about to order a RED one camera. I read the following on RED web page FAQ:
"The RED phenomenon is a true village and there isn't a single RED user that wouldn't love to show off his acquisition and share his experience".
So, I'd be very gratefull if there is anybody willing to waste some time showing me the camera. My e-mail address is alash@cmbonline.net, and I'm staying in NY till the end of this week.
Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone
Some of you may already have gotten a PM from me. I just discovered the New York area on the forum.
As a Belgian filmstudent I am making a short movie on a RED ONE camera. The movie takes place in New York but will be shot here in Belgium. I do need some inserts of New York however. Is there any of you who has time over the next 2 weeks or so to make images of New York for me? Contact me on my e-mail address and I'll give more details.
As a student my budget is limited but there will be a compensation for the work done.
Thanks in advance

Hi everyone
It's me again. I found a great guy who will shoot the images for me in New York I was talking about above. Now all we need is a zoom lens with which he can shoot these images. I am Belgian film student and I need several images of New York for a shot movie which will be shot mostly here in Belgium.
Is there anyone in the NY area who will rent us one of the Red zoom lenses for a fair price? I would have to be the 18-50 or 18-85. Or another similar lens.
Sent me a personal message if you have a lens available or have any comments.
Greetings

Hey, everybody. We have our cam up and running with NIKON mount. So far, only a 50 (F 1.4) and an 80, but keeping my eyes open for new glass. The images are better than i ever imagined.
We are painting the inside of our building chroma key green, including a LONG stairway and a balcony. We woud love to see other members of the RED family come by and take a look.
We are also looking at playback options for 4K... any SONY SXRD 4K projectors for rent? or maybe that 4K LCD screen. We may build a cheap ($10,000) 4K projector... any interest in that?
Please, guys (and gals) give us a jingle, i am at CTL Electronics... Lui has been selling and renting to visual artists since the beginning of time, back in the days of the REVOLUTIONARY Sony PORTAPACK that made alternative video possible... Now that revolution finally has reached the movie industry and we continue to support the artist.
