View Full Version : REDCINE Information

Below is some information that should answer a lot of your initial questions about beta REDCINE (download on RED.com/support):
NOTE: REDCINE 1.0.60 is a beta software release. This software is for preview and testing purposes only. Beta software should not be used on commercial projects.
OPERATING SYSTEMS:
Mac - REDCINE should be used only on Tiger OSX. Testing has not been done in Leopard.
PC – REDCINE should only be used on Windows XP Professional 32-bit with Service Pack 2. Testing has not been done on Vista.
KNOWN ISSUES:
NR value is not persisting. It reverts back to LOW as soon as current frame is changed.
New project sets the viewer to 1:1 instead of FIT.
Selecting the current frame advances the viewer image +1 frame but the actual number is not updated. Results in wrong value being used. Manually changing the current frame corrects this.
OSX ONLY -- if a QT file is selected in the Finder and you try to re-render over that file, REDCINE will fail. Unselect the file in Finder and renders will work.
CLEAN INSTALLS:
When upgrading from previous builds of REDCINE you must remove certain folders. BACKUP ALL FOLDERS BEFORE DELETING THEM AS THIS WILL REMOVE ALL CURRENT REDCINE PROJECTS.
Windows:
Be sure to save the current REDCINE timeline you are working on and exit REDCINE.
Backup the following folders: C:\Program Files\REDCINE and C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\REDCINE
Remove REDCINE using ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS
Delete the folders; C:\Program Files\REDCINE and C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\REDCINE
Install the new build of REDCINE by double-clicking on the .msi installer
You can access saved REDCINE Projects from the backup you created.
OSX:
Be sure to save the current REDCINE timeline you are working on and exit REDCINE.
Backup the following folder: Install Disk\Library\REDCINE
Delete the folder: Install Disk\Library\REDCINE
Double-click the disk image that was included in the installer zip, which will open a folder with the application package.
Drag the package into the Application folder
SUPPORT:
REDCINE Beta is not directly supported by RED. All technical questions should be directed to the REDUSER.NET online community in this REDCINE Workflow sub-forum.

One thing to note while we get the public download ready.. Redcine is a Beta product and technical support is limited to the community... we will all help you out of course here the best we can, but lets keep the Red.com support tickets focused on the Camera.

Are there any .R3D clips available to download and experiment with? Pardon me if I've missed it, but I've checked in a few threads and haven't seen mention of actual clips.
For guys without cameras, it would seem pointless to download and mess with REDCINE without them...

Thanks very much for the open beta! Anxiously awaiting appearance of any .R3D files to try. Even just a single frame would be quite interesting.
I understand there is no formal support, but is there some organized way that we should document misbehaviors, should any occur ?
I'm running the recommended WinXP Pro XP2 32-bit system with 2 GB ram. Redcine opens up just fine, but after clicking around randomly, switching to "color" mode and tweeking the curves widget, the mouse freezes and the computer makes a short beep at about 30 second intervals while CPU is pegged at 50%. Of course, I have no .R3D file loaded yet in the program. Maybe that is the problem (?)

No R3D files is not the problem.
What graphics card and driver are you running? On XP - NVidia Quadro-core is what is recommended, and download the most recent drivers from the NVidia site.
If you're just running integrated mobo gfx on an older computer, things could get unpleasant. Take a look in your logfile close to the top where it has all the info about your gfx config (OpenGL section.) Does everthing say "available," or are there lots of "not available," and other ominous sounding stuff?

I observe the ominous warnings you mention. It looks like my computer is not worthy.
Maybe the app could say as much in large letters, eg. "don't expect me to work right with such miserable hardware as you've got here, buy a Nvida card..." or similar. Kudos for even attempting to run on junky hardware, though.

Unfortunately, you are correct. Although you may be worthy, your computer is not. Embedded ATI mobo gfx on XP are not great for GPU-enhanced OpenGL apps. Not a lot of goodness there.
You will probably be able to see R3D clips, but not do any color manipulations.
Stroll down to Best Buy tomorrow and spend a few hundred for a Quadro card of some kind and things will improve. Grand Theft Auto will run better too.

NOT. There are bugs. Per the RED website - do NOT use this on a commercial project. Find the bugs and report them. That's what we are doing. For example, try exporting with a pulldown and check the TC, etc.

I STRONGLY suggest a REDCINE section on the forum - and a sticky of KNOWN ISSUES -
now that the beta is "public" - this forum is gonna light up like a Christmas tree -
this is still, IMHO, very BETA -
for example:
REEL # do NOT transfer to rendered QT yet (same as RedAlert w/wrappers)
We have interns manually entering Reel numbers ALL DAY LONG in FCP (which does re-write the meta-data) - so, we will keep howling for that - without it - EDL is useless.
I just hope that time and energy of the REDCINE team is first spent on feedback and bugs - not answering tons of basic questions because thorough documentation does not yet exist.
It's gonna be AWESOME - I just fear many folks will not heed the "do not use on commercial project" warning -
Play with it - try to break it - report bugs - welcome to beta-ville
Simon Blackledge

Mark,
Good points.
So when you re name the reels in fcp that are your prores renders? or the Wrapped r3d files?
When you then export your EDL.. what are you using to conform ?

Would you be willing to suggest a good-better-best list of graphics cards? I know that the MaxCube has a Quadro FX 5500 SDI as part of the package, but is a lesser Quadro (3500, 4500) also acceptable? Is there a decent "entry" level that you would recommend as a starting point?

Are you using a Wacom? In that case I think it's recommended to slightly shrink your screen area in all directions in the Tablet Properties. So you don't have to swipe all the way to the end of the tablet before the menus appear/disappear. This is actually a Scratch "tip" but I believe it could be related...

Redcine is an awesome app... not an original line I know, but damn I'm loving it.
I do have a question possibly will be resolved in future builds but for the time being a question none the less. The display guide settings in the project settings menu give the option of selecting the time code to be displayed bellow the frame display in the view port. The frame option out of the drop down menu will display a frame count from the entire time line not of individual clips. In the shot settings of the shot menu the in/out options relate to the frames of individual clips not as part of an entire time line frame count. So there is no way to correspond the frame number displayed in the in/out points of the shot settings menu to the frame numbers in the view port. This is when a few clips are in the time line that is.
Or is there? Am I missing something?

I'm getting ready to grade this music video and I wanted to know if there is a list of what each of the output filter do in RedCine anywhere.
I just want to make sure I understand each one.
