Redcine is great!
A couple of comments:
When I loaded the R3D file I had to resize it to 50% to get the whole image.
Apple leopard doesn't seem to have a little RED thumbnail to stick onto the file, (essential to quickly distinguish RED footage from crap footage..)
What settings should we grade our monitors to? 1.8 or REC709?
Are there scopes in REDCINE?
Has anyone done the math on how much we can scale up from 4K to 1080P before the app starts to interpolate pixels from info it doesn't have?
What's Jim's rate as a DoP? :gun:
Many thanks for the great work!
Álex Montoya
11-15-2007, 02:12 AM
I must say that while nice, Jim's clip is a wee soft. I mean with that that I've seen RED 4K grabs with clearly more resolution than this one. I don't know if that's a problem with the old mount or something. If anyone can confirm...
Anyway, here's a 2K try:

eh man there's a big difference between filming live action as it happens, in this case enormous powerful motor vehicles moving unpredictably and incredibly fast, and filming a set up where you can measure and measure again..

I'm not attacking anyone. I think the softness, which is similar as the one you see in Mike's Curtis footage, comes from a problem they have acknowledged and are working to solve.
And it's not that big an issue since the 2K is completely usable. Focusing this with a closed iris and at that distance shouldn't be a big problem. To me it looks as a backfocus thing.

When will Red 4K be enabled? I tried rendering out some 4K tiffs and they came out black. I'm assuming this isn't enabled yet... I had to "step it down" to 4K 2:1.
What really amazes me, is we haven't even seen the cameras full 4K potential yet, at least I haven't via my PC at home following all of this stuff online.

I have installed this XP Version of Redcine on 2 Pcs and on both machines, the software seems unusable. XP Dell 3.06ghz 1gb ram 1280 x1024 res
The screen goes blank dark grey and by clicking the output window or moving it slightly, the button images disappear off screen.
F1 button repaints the screen when double pressed to see what buttons are available.
Why is the output screen moveable ?
Am i missing something here ? 2 Pcs new dell.

It works fine. It's probably a compatibility problem with your machine.
Either that, or you're working with 2K footage.
Many people have posted TIFFs and JPEGs of 4K footage... so I don't really know what you mean when you say that we haven't seen the full potential of the camera?

Hey Brook,
I was messing around with the 4K file, and I all I get is black when I use 4K. I have to switch to 4K 2:1. The first post says its a 4K 2:1 file, so maybe thats why.

Following my last post,
I have further tied on an acer 3.4ghz 2g ram nVidia GEo 128Mb graphics card.
Application looks stable as in no buttons disappear, but i only get a black window instead of the footage, this with both of the downloaded video files.
I have tried all options , but to no avail, just black.
The Thumbnail of the video at the bottom of the screen is also black.
When i scroll through the frames, still black
Any ideas ?

How long are rendering times supposed to be, roughly, for Quicktime files? I loaded up A003_C007_071105_001.R3D, played around with the curves, some color adjustments, and set it up as a 2.39:1 frame. I used ProRes 422, Normal Quality, Standard Processing, and set it up to output as a 1K film res file. I'm outputting the whole range (236 frames) and my estimated time is just shy of 3 hours! Is this normal?
I'm on an Intel iMac, the 24" one with the nVidia GeForce 7600GT, 2gb of ram. Curious to hear what kind of output times other people are getting.
The software seems really cool so far.

So... in theory, 4K 1:1 should be even better right?
There is no 4K 1:1. These are aspect ratio proportions, nothing to do with image quality or compression. 4K 2:1 is 4096x2048 resolution, it was enabled before 4K 16:9 (4096x2304).
Rob Lohman
11-15-2007, 04:10 PM
Andy: I'm pretty sure your graphics card is not up to snuff. Especially if you're seeing black frames and the such. Some older graphics cards can't deal with 4K material for example (or do color corrections).
Graphics card is EVERYTHING in REDCINE!
4K (16:9) should work in REDCINE (but not in RED ALERT! or the QuickTime codec!!), however we advice everyone to shoot 4K 2:1 (as all camera owners have been informed) since that is supported on all apps. This will be rectified shortly.
Please remember this is a beta. So if you're posting problems post full system details etc.

Since many of us are new to GPU-based software, I think it would be useful to make a list of video cards that (1) work well & quickly, (2) work well but may be slow, and (3) don't work well or don't work at all, with Redcine.
So far, my understanding is that a Nvidia Quadro FX card should work well, and older Nvidia cards and all other card brands will likely not work at all (?)
Also, I note that "Nvidia Quadro FX" appears to cover quite a range of models, from VCQFX330PCIEPB at $85 to VCQFX5500SDIPCIEPB at $7000.

oh geez - i just exported to import into AVID and then pushed color correction in avid very hard and MY GOD did it stand up well. It takes a whole lot to make this image fall apart - and this was WITHOUT preprocessing in Redcine - so if you do it right its even better
all i can say right now is wow. Great stuff
the only issue is the export time to export files for editing systems - if you shoot 20-30 hours for a feature it could take 6 months to have the files ready :) - I hope that will get better

I am completely blown away at using Redcine! Easy install, slow on my old P4 computer, but whatcha gonna do. This seriously is the funnest program I've used for a long time! I don't consider myself a colorist AT ALL but playing with Redcine has been a lot of fun. Here's just some fun...once again, I'm not a colorist. I'm just blown away at how far I can take the image and have it still look excellent! Great job guys! Can't wait to get mine!
Note: Any artifacts you are seeing are because of my inexperience with outputting from Redcine. The footage is prestine! And sorry for the large image...couldn't resist.

I tried both F10 and F11... none minimized the program... F10 does turn an image border line on and off though, so thats nice. At the moment I'm hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up my task manager and from there I minimize it, small price to pay I suppose, Lustre is the same way :/

Thanks Rob! But I still think there should be a button. A good example would be Avid, I've seen some long time Avid guys do EVERYTHING using the keyboard, but you don't have to, and quite frankly, not all of those key strokes are even documented in Avids own manuals!

That should only be applicable if you want the browser to do something with the file (like pull up the QT plugin and play it). If you're simply copying the file, it makes no difference what associations or types are assigned.

Found this clip on the Red site...according to the metadata it was shot with the new RED MINI the same day as the first clip but later in the evening...obviously Jim had been drinking a bit.

Whatever you used to zoom in and pan, it left a ton of blended frames.

That should only be applicable if you want the browser to do something with the file (like pull up the QT plugin and play it). If you're simply copying the file, it makes no difference what associations or types are assigned.
Since the server is serving it as image/vnd.wap.wbmp, that is what the browser will treat it as by default unless you have a browser which does not know about WAP.

Anyone got smooth Full res. High playback on the 4k clip in RedCine? I'm on a Mac Pro 8 core with 9GB, ATI Radeon X1900XT and a RAID-5 and the playback of the 4k clip in Full res. High is very slow. I just want to know if my system is capable of smooth 4k playback for future 4k monitoring.
1/2 Res. High playback and below is smooth.

Oh man, REDCINE is AWESOME! I love it! This is the first time I have fooled around with it at all. Very cool!
One question: How can I view the 2K clip at full res on my computer? In other words, how do I view them "full screen"?

Can someone do me a favor and CC one of these clips, then encode and post it was 1080p MOV? I'd like to see how crisp and clear it will look playing full-res on my 1080p screen here, so I can compare it 1080p trailers and bluray rips, etc. The footage I am viewing in REDCINE doesn't seem dazzlingly high res, but maybe I'm doing something wrong.

I thought this too until I watched the instructional videos and saw how you could change the option by clicking on the "Show: Res 1/4 High" or similar button to the bottom left of the preview frame.

I saw that, but my computer won't play "full res" 4K clips. It slows down to a crawl, and I have an Nvidia 8800GTX with 768MBs onboard and a fast new dual-core chip.
That's why I thought it would be nice to see a 1080p CC'd MOV I can play full res on my computer with no problems, to assess the quality.
thanks

No sweat, I wasn't sure so it was prudent to cover the bases :)
As far as playing 4K Full in real time, my beast (Quad core 3.2GHz, 1600MHZ FSB, GeForce 8800GTX 768MB) has similar issues to yours, so I'm guessing it really is just too CPU/GPU intensive to play out in real time just yet.
Keep up the good work re: your timelapse clips, they rock!

Oh thanks.
So can anyone do this? Can I do it myself? I want to see a CC'd MOV encoding of these clips at 1080p?

Thanks Jarred & Jim!.
I am just starting to work out a vfx pipeline for RED and wondered if I
could use these to test & demonstrate work, e.g. removal & replacement?
