I sure miss having the 16-42 and 30-80 zooms around here and keep thinking about re-visiting the optimo zooms. I'm definitely going to check this one out.... Not sure what to expect for price, that has me a bit scared.

The 45-120 is a film Optimo so expect $45K+, but that doesn't mean it's not worth it.

This is Canon's touted release...

What matte box are you using with your Optimo?

Congrats!!!

I briefly owned both of the DP zooms. Bought the 30-80 used from another reduser member and then the 16-42 new very shortly after its release. They worked for their intended purpose and a small series of projects where I needed to be mobile with a RED kit in a large backpack. I ended up selling them as I couldn't justify keeping them and they were not renting well (at all) here at the time. Sold them shortly after getting the RPP's... Actually had to do so to cover the RPP purchase. If I could spend $40K on glass today, that is what I would buy though, no second thoughts about it -- the two Optimo DP zooms.

The 40-120 is a film Optimo so expect $45K+, but that doesn't mean it's not worth it.

And it would be a perfectly sexy companion to the 15-40 Optimo... Which is about $40K+ most of the time. I found one lightly used about a year ago (looked brand new) for about $32K, a steal, but I just couldn't do it. Needless to say, it sold fast.

My plan is to have 8-600mm all in a nice lightweight package...

8mm T3.5 Peleng fisheye
11-16mm T3 Duclos/Tokina
16-42mm T2.8 Optimo DP
30-80mm T2.8 OPtimo DP
70-200mm T3 Duclos/Nikkor
300mm T2.8 Red Pro
2x Optex/Nikkor doubler

New Angenieux 45-120 T2.8 probably is based on the older design of Angenieux 45-90 f/2.8 that they made for Leica-R (Leicaflex) FF35mm cameras during 70s.

I had it on my R1 and this is pretty lightweight lens that has well known excellent Angenieux optical+mechanical quality.

I think you're playing it a little fast and loose with the word "lightweight" but still sounds cool

I heard the price tag for the 45-120 is $50,000. Works on both film and digital cameras.

How are you getting the 600? doubling the Red (PL doubler?) or tripling the Nikkor? I'm hanging on to my Canon 150-600.

The specs of the 45-120 say it covers 31.4mm but isn't the Epic sensor 33.5mm ?

Jeff Kilgroe

Active area on the Epic MX sensor is 31.26mm diagonal.

This one looks really interesting.
It covers a very good focal range.

Please report back when you guys get a chance to have a look at it.
Price would be good to know.

Yes, doubling the Red 300mm.

Is that the Optex doubler you refer to? Does that maintain sharpness?

Why not use Leica Apo x1.4 and x2 doubler in PL. Les Bosher made a set for us, I think it outstrips the Nikkor.

Evin Grant

The Leica is probably better but I got the Optex (Nikkor TC201 rehoused) at a pretty good deal. As far as sharpness it's fine as long as you start with a very sharp lens to begin with.
Any of the long 2.8 Nikkors, Canons, or the Red 300mm are plenty sharp enough. That said I'd love to see the new 2x Aspheric Nikkor doubler rehoused to PL.

I was fortunate to use this lens unsupervised for 14 hours in Vegas for a test shoot. It was a prototype and not perfect yet, but it certainly has potential. Its so light, and the range is fantastic. Love that lens.

The guy from Angenieux at the booth told me the 45-120mm would retail for $55,000.

5k 120mm f/2.6 at 3 feet has to look nice. :)
