I might be tempted. Does it mean giving up your FC serial number (i.e. selling it to AVID)?

If Avid supported more 3rd party hardware, this would be even better. For example, they support AJA I/O Express but what I would love is support for Kona line. That would make this switch back to Avid easier for me. Currently invested in Kona pipeline for editing/color correction.
But if the hardware is not an issue, this does seem like a good deal.

I don't think you have to sell them your serial , but I believe you have to show proof of serial by sending in your booklet with the serial on the back. still a good deal considering avids normal price and gets you on the upgrade ladder without spending $2500, deal is good until june 17th. depending on what apple announce tomorrow people could be jumping to avid or premiere in droves

I got a mail from Avid - you just follow a link, enter your serial and they email you a discount code that you can use one-time only at the Avid store. It's going to be very cool to have the option, but I hope Apple give me enough reason to stay with FCP!

I'm hoping that it is precisely because of what Apple are announcing tomorrow that Avid are discounted their kit so heavily. Looks like a panic to me.

I rather NOT send my serial number booklet to AVID. I don't mind filling in a form with it though.
I'm hoping that tomorrow will make the $ decisions more clear for me.
The strange thing is discounted from $2500 to $995 seems like a good deal until I think about how @$995 it's the same price as another FCP license.
Unless of course Apple drops the FCS price to $499 like they did with Logic Studio.

Precisely. Final Cut Studio is now available for as low as $700 in some places. Even if one has no interest in FCS that's a good $800 discount for nothing. Is the FCS license salable after the crossgrade? Not sure why anyone would go for the direct $2500 license then!

the import of red raw is very cool with avid but is there redlogfilm2 and redcolor in the latest version, when you buy it or can it be updated with it?
will there be a direct import with FCP X too?

will there be a direct import with FCP X too? Avid is trying to stay current with RED's SDKs. The RED support is part of AMA. You have to get and install the plug-ins separately, but they are free. Only the QuickTime AMA plug-in is installed as part of AMA with the MC installers from MC 5.5 onward. Avid has links on their site to all the AMA plug-ins (RED, P2, XDCAM, GFCAM, etc.). Since it's a plug-in architecture, it's easier to stay updated with current versions independent of the version of the host.
Avid MC supports Red Rocket. If you are just doing offline editing on MC, transcoding to DNxHD36 at 1/8 res is close to real-time on an 8-core Mac without Red Rocket.
One cool thing with AMA is the interop with other apps, because AMA maintains the path info for the original import. Even if you transcode to MXF media within MC. I have used Boris AAF Transfer to move MC sequences over to After Effects and it instantly links to the original R3D files. Plus, The Foundry plans on adding Avid round-tripping support to STORM over the summer.
AFAIK, FCP X... No one knows.

Ultimately it comes down to whether you like the Media Composer editing environment. For many editors, it is still the gold standard. Others hate it. You can download the trial version and see for yourself, but be sure to really give yourself some solid seat time in order to get comfortable with its way of doing things.
