I am trying to render out an AVI for my PC friends.. And I have seen others say they have made WMVs..
How is this done?

You can import the output of RedCine into an NLE and then export (transcode) into any format that your NLE can write (.wmv, .avi, etc.).

So what you are saying is that I have to output something like a quicktime file, then take that into an editor, and then transcode from there to a usable format.
This is not good in a big way. And brings back the need for 1080 and 720 direct output.
Offload form card. Import to REDCine, Export from REDCine, Import to editor, export from editor to codec of choice..
Nope.. that way too many steps and knocks out a lot of different types of work where speed is important.

How is 1080/720 direct out going to change the workflow here?

I was under the impression that this would be an output from the camera itself that would bypass REDCine altogether

What would help if you can define what would be your desired deliverables for this scenario. That is going to help determine the shortest (simplest) post path.
