Can anyone at the Red Team pass along the size, in millimeters, of the portion of the chip that records in 4K Redcode with the onboard recording solutions? I know the sensor size is 24.4mmx13.7mm.
I'm having a custom ground glass made for my ARRI Media Finder and would like to show the full sensor area as well as the slightly smaller area that actually "hits the card"
Thanks in advance...
Cheers,
Harry

Hi Paul...
Where did you come up with that figure... just doing the math of how many pixels in 4K vs. 4.5K?

I remember it from a chart made by a DVXuser called Proteus from a while ago. The chart was accurate according to most in the know about the sensor way back when.
I've never done the math personally so here goes. We know at it's full 2540p (4520 x 2540) Red uses 24.4mmx13.7mm of the sensor size (Full sensor size is actually a little larger since it has 4700x2540 but the image is cropped to fit 16:9). 4K Redcode RAW uses 4096 x 2304 pixels.
100/4520x4096=90.6195...%
24.4x0.906195...=22.11115...%
100/2540x2304=90.70866...% (Hmm I thought this number and the above ought to be the same? I Guess they are close)
13.7x0.9070866=12.427
So by math the sensor at 4K Redcode RAW is 22.11115x12.427mm, so that's actually a little smaller than the originally quoted number. Needless to say it's around that number anyway. And yeah perhaps if someone from Red can confirm or deny that'd be useful. It might be that the original sensor size for 2540p is missing some decimal places that I haven't considered which is why mine are a bit smaller.

It's much easier and more accurate just to multiply the horizontal (and vertical) number of pixels by the pixel pitch of 5.4 microns.

Thanks guys...
I think I'll err a bit on the small side and round it down to 22x12.4 for the inner box on the viewfinder. I wonder if I should include a safe zone within that, or maybe I'm geting into too many lines... maybe a box for "full ap" and just corners for the 22x12.4 "full raster" and a box for "safe action"?
Cheers,
Harry
