You have an M all your own now Ketch! I'm sure the new M and M8 can't wait to land on an ET Atom and crank out some incredible 3D images :-)

Our friendship and work alliance dating back to 2006 has been totally fun, interesting, and rewarding in so many ways. Me and Pam really look forward to teaming up with you for many incredible productions in the future.

In truth, none of us here on Red User would be having any of these incredible tools to work with if it wasn't for Jim's visionary foresight and many years of extremely hard work by a deeply talented and dedicated Red Team.

Thanks Patrick, it should be very short, just tests mostly to re-arrange the medications.

All I can say right now, not to derail this thread out of EPIC M, is that KETCH ROSSi STUDiOS will be first opened in its HQ facility in Northern ITALY,
will be intended to be the most revolutionizing Studios ever created, State of the Art will get to a new level and this is by no joke or exaggeration
a NEW ERA type of facility, which will also serve as a FREE Cinema and Photography School for Global attendee's, Hundreds of them per year,
and that we will have various location across the Globe with various Partners, will be most likely 90% a facility that will operate on RED Cameras,
and most importantly, by donating 50% of all its yearly profits, it will support its Sister Non Profit Organization, KETCH ROSSi HUMANiTAS.

For anything else, it wil have to wait for the info to be fully disclosed on our company's site. KETCH ROSSi STUDiOS (http://www.ketchrossistudios.com)

... is that KETCH ROSSi STUDiOS will be first opened in its HQ facility in Northern ITALY

Curious about this Ketch -- is it because Milan and other Northern cities are closer to all the high fashion that takes place in Italy ... which I
could understand since still/motion photography of models is a big part of what you do?

I also ask because it seems the more Southern parts of Italy have nicer climates (like Rome, Tuscany, etc) .... but maybe you are tried of the "always warm" weather of California with no season changes ;)

Either way, I cant wait to see it and visit ...

I've lived in a few different places in Italy, and if I could choose, I'd pick Tuscany (though I'm totally in love with Rome). From what I understand about your plans/ideas, Tuscany sounds like the best choice, both professionally and for quality of life, and the countryside near Siena would be my #1 choice. But that's me.... :-)

For life style quality certainly, but professionaly I'm not convince, I'm around Siena since 1997, it is really the country side here.
Anyway I'll be happy to see some serious player coming into my area.

Thing is that the Studios will demand that all interested in working with us, come to us, we will not go to any one,
so what will be most important is life style presented and offered to the people that will leave and work at the studios facilities,
as well as of course make sure that this location is set in such a place that it is easy to get in meaning of transportation.
Not too far from Airport, Train station, main freeway access etc.

Brice, I don't know who you usually work with or what's your market, but the area around Siena is VERY lively when it comes to moving pictures and photo shoots. Every once in a while you get the medium/big Hollywood movie, but the amount of commercials shot in that area is pretty big. Granted, there are no real sound stages (after all, Cinecittà is 2 hours aways, and there are some smaller ones in Florence, 50 minutes away from Siena), or big rental houses (again, most gear is rented in Rome, Florence or Bologna), but there's a pretty good production infrastructure. I've worked in Tuscany many times, and before moving to Rome I worked on many commercials and 4 feature films in 3 years.

I never picked up the Photo camera to take other shots, especially once I sow the new build and a 1fps Option!!!

I immediately went to set up the cam and test for the next Fashion Shoot.

While I know nothing about Siena, I think Tuscany is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Warm, lush, close to mountains and water, reasonable driving distance to both Rome and Florence. It's on my dream list of places to live.

Thing is that since we will also be serving the entire European community, and not just for our Studios offerings, as far as Motion Pictures,
High End Commercials etc. but also few surprise announcement that will be made later on, so for this we look to be some were in a favorable position to that as well,
and Tuscany is in deed number one Region in my list... ;)

Anthony, you should definitely put Siena on your "to visit" list next time you're anywhere near Tuscany (or even Rome). It's truly breathtaking. As much as I love Rome, I try to go back to Siena any chance I get, whether it's for fun or work.
I've attached 2 pictures I've taken a while ago: first one is "downtown" Siena, with the main piazza, the second is the backyard of a farm owned by a friend of mine, 15 minutes ride from the town :-)

Main goal for our Studios, is a very large facility, to host not only the:
Cyclorama Rooms
Sound stages
Lighting department
Grip department
Editing suits
Coloring suits
Make Up and Air
Wardrobe
Machine Shop
4K 3D Imax Theater
Restaurant
Pizzeria
Cappuccino Bar
Bad and Breakfast logging facility for 100

.... and the list goes on, but also needs to have a large in off room for the Monthly Charity Grand Gala events, so the search will not be an easy one
and even so I am definitely looking at possibly existing structures and historic buildings i the various Cities, this might only temporary accommodate our Studios needs,
and a brand new Building might be built form scratch, once the location has been chosen ... ;)

Ok so who is shooting Epic 3D at the moment?

As who in our company, or who in general?

From just meeting you not to long ago. This couldn't happen to a such a great guy who will change the world one step at a time. I cant wait to see what you do in the next few years.

Here's to hoping that when back you'll also find a gorgeous Italiana -- perhaps someday Mrs. Rossi -- to accompany you on this amazing head-spinning journey ;)

You are such a great guy, with so many strong qualities, I highly doubt you are going to be able to stay single for long buddy -- I'm quite sure it's not like the boring/empty Lake Elsinore desert over there in Rome and Tuscany. I have heard great things about Italy in this regard ;)

They will be lining up and I hope you find a great one who truly supports you in your big plans and vision ...

KETCH ROSSi STUDiOS (http://www.ketchrossistudios.com)

all I got to say is : wow! I'll be there to see what you've achieved. This sounds really more than great.
And if anyone can pull it off, I guess it's you :)

and btw ...Northern Italy sounds good, cause then I can drop by more often ;)
any info on your timetable? when where what? Maybe we could meet up sometime soon, when you're back in Italy.
or when you're touring germany. Would love to meet you in person!

take care, ketch!

KETCH ROSSi
04-25-2011, 01:17 PM
They are no timetable at this time, he he, didn't mean to write it that way... ;)

Italy's HQ wil open at the same time or in close dates with our first partner Studios in Abu Dabi, Dubai, or Egypt, so lots of work,
and the facilities will not be something small either, so time is needed.

But upon my return to Italy, apart form Photographing as many beautiful girls as I can, I will be fully dedicated to the opening of the Studios, apart form traveling of course... ;)

Your Epic M will be perfect to film that race.

Well, we shot it with 13 35mm cameras and it looked pretty cool :D
Surely the Epic would be great way to capture amazing images from the piazza, too bad you wouldn't be able to use any of that footage (except for your own home videos) without having the authorization and paying LOTS of money to the official Consorzio per la tutela del Palio. Welcome to Italy :-)

Hi Ketch,

Maybe I jump in :-)
I am following Cycling for almost 20 years as sportjournalist. Spring-Classics, Giro d´Italia, Tour de Suisse, Tour of Austria, Tour de France, World Championships. I met a few of the big boys in person. Pantani, Cippolini, Bettini, Bugno, Winokurow, Ullrich, Zabel, Greipel, Evans and Lance Armstrong.

I am going next week to Torino. The Start of the Giro d Italia. With an Epic I could shoot an epic cycling movie...

Norbert - you're my hero. I love cycling and have followed (albeit "on and off") for more than 25 years. I was in the cycling industry for a few years in the late '80s and early '90s. Got to meet some of the legendary North Americans: LeMond, Andy Hampsten, Alex Stieda, Eric Heiden; even had dinner with Lance when he was just a pup!

Have fun shooting all that great action. Would love to see some of what you shoot. And good luck getting that Epic ASAP!! :thumbup1:

Curious about this Ketch -- is it because Milan and other Northern cities are closer to all the high fashion that takes place in Italy ... which I
could understand since still/motion photography of models is a big part of what you do?

I also ask because it seems the more Southern parts of Italy have nicer climates (like Rome, Tuscany, etc) .... but maybe you are tried of the "always warm" weather of California with no season changes ;)

Either way, I cant wait to see it and visit ...

Anthony

In deed it does Jarred, and we are proud to say that KETCH ROSSi STUDiOS in addition to the multiple ET's ATOM rigs with Gates Deep Atom,
will sports several of E3D's 3D rigs, which again, will be so much more compact and lighter then this prototype.

Aaron Schnobrich

I was there with Ketch, Joseph, Nate and Leo (among others) and operated a few shots on the rig in it's current state (without the weight reduction). I was a 3D novice at the start of the shooting day and by evening had not only shot handheld with Nate but felt confident that the rig would allow the shooting of technically accurate 3D after minimal prep with the E3D team.

Big thank you to the E3D guys for being so generous with their time.

Totally agree with you 100% Ketch.

Have been looking at a Mobile RedRocket for a mini DIT location setup and wondering how you got on with yours which you had on load I think from Maxx. Saves lugging a MacPro on location - and of course slightly cheaper to run a Mobile RedRocket on location to offload media from SSD, backup and transcode.

Thanks guys,

coming from over 20 years of Photography I just simply can't let go of Portrait style shooting, and even so some have done it with the R1, I just simply didn't felt it was right for the job,
however EPIC does take me right back to were I started, so now I'll shoot Portrait Still/Motion away and here comes the true term as intended by Jim "CINEPHOTOGRAPHER" now I really fill I am one... ;)

I wish I did had the R90 but I used the old and great Ball head with Gitzo sticks, trust me when I say I am looking forward to the R90 in Italy!!

The behind the scenes and the how of things has been always in my curiosity to know and always want more, in that spirit I made sure that form the very
beginning of this new EPIC adventures I documented as much as I can and will continue to do so, thanks for watching... ;)

Hi Alvise, I am actually staying with Luca till I get my own place, hopefully soon, we'll be shooting a 3D piece end of month near Venice, so possibly we'll try and make a stop in Milan after that,

Quick question, what focal lengths do you find yourself reaching for the most while doing a studio fashion shoot?

I know you use the Master Primes, and probably have a pretty complete set. Just wondering which are your favourites...

Thanks!

Thanks Gary,

if you like Fashion, now that I am back in Italy look out for it, cause I'l be doing quite some, and in 3D as well, prepping for my first 3D frame grabs gallery... ;)

As you can imagine, the longest the focal, the more flattering the Models get, so I reach out mostly for the long Focal, and awaiting for the 150mm which will become my lens of choice for Fashion work,
when in need to do extreme close ups and macro, but often really like even the 35mm a lot for full body shots, while I absolutely love the 75mm for medium shots, even so I do use the 18mm as well,
I leave that for extreme situations were I really need to capture the Model in a large BG of buildings or green or any structure of interest were the talent needs to become part of the actual structure or landscape.

But I must say, that I look forward to get our RED Canon mount to be able to use some serious "L" Canon glass, in the Super telephoto range 200mm, 300mm, and 400mm... ;)

hi Ketch....quick question: what would be your minimu compression for 5K FF if you wanted to extract a pic to enlarge for 8x10 inch print format on paper?

I have not shot anything below 5:1 compression, which is what also most Major Films are been shot at, going to 3:1 as some do it seems just a huge waist of space, as of now... ;)

Enrique Blein
08-03-2011, 08:28 AM
An when you see the photograph on paper, how does it feel compared to previous experiences with regular DSLRs, does the 14 Megapixels per frame stand up to what you were used to? I'm very curious about this aspect of the DSMC system, the printed quality.... thanks for your input, it's great to have it from such a photographer like you

KETCH ROSSi
08-03-2011, 08:55 AM
Prints form Epic, hold incredibly well, better then any prints I have seen coming form a sub 21mp cameras,
and soon many will see at our first EPIC Gallery, that will feature all frame grabs form EPIC printed in various sizes, it will be lots of fun... ;)

Enrique Blein

BTW, in bocca al lupo with your studio in Italy...

08-03-2011, 10:08 AM
THANKS Enrique, even so looks like the Studios will have to wait a little do to our projects taking priority.

We have done tests with 13x19, great results, it really depends on subject, and lots of things, but for the gallery we will do prints up to 30x60" shown next to 60" Monitors, and the real girls of course... ;)

He he, not really, but let me tell you that seen images of Epic been printed that large on a room full of well dressed people of the high class fashion and TV world,
will make my face smile just as much, especially when they all find out that none have come form Still cameras or Medium format still cameras I should say.

A real NEW era has arrived for the world of Digital Imaging... ;)

Enrique Blein
08-03-2011, 11:29 AM
absolutely, still photographers must be very nervous, because as I see it, if well shot material is useful for printing...I am usually hired by a firm to record documentaries and sometimes I have a still photographer working next to me, also hired by them, which means an extra person to cater, lodge, pay for his work, etc...I don't know what would be the right approach, ethically and moneywise for a cameraman who can also deliver stills, what are your thoughts on this?

KETCH ROSSi
08-03-2011, 11:54 AM
I must say that every were I go Still Photographers do accept change, even so not lively, they do present a sincere interest in the RED technology offered with EPIC, they just want single frame with Flash Sync, at 1/8000 and so do I... ;)

The possibilities presented in shooting 120fps at flu res, is just simply not easy to comprehend and it needs to be seen and showcased, in order to give a flu grasp of what this can do for once particular job assignment.

Of course lighting needs also need to be taken under serious consideration, then there is HDRx!!

Time are changing, and are changing fast, He'She hum does not see, will be blinded by the shier light of the train passing by them he he.

Enrique Blein
08-09-2011, 10:34 AM
Hi Ketch, sorry to hear about your health problems....
Can I ask you another question: when you are shooting for stills, what is your recommendation for framing the subject on your Epic if your image is so "wide". How do you think in terms of 4:3, or other formats? Do you have a grid or something to compose?

KETCH ROSSi
08-10-2011, 12:17 AM
Thanks for the concern Enrique, I'll get better, I know, and even if I don't mi mind will always be the same, strong and restless... ;)

I always have a final output already in mind before shooting, so framing for me always is dependent on that final need, but I much prefer wide images, and I do love 2:1,
I always waist so much pixels in MF do to the square format, but more recently with Leaf and the new Leica S2, I was fortunate to have a more rectangular ratio, now with Epic I am in joy,
as I have the possibility to shoot the full sensor but most importantly get 2:1, and this is what I always shoot.

As we continue to prepare for our first EVER I think, EPIC gallery, all frame grabs, since Still mode is not yet active, will b wall in 2:1 ratio.

As for framing you can choose a frame guide when shooting, and I like to have it on as well, but it is at 2:1.

Milan Nikolic
