Hi everyone,

Please supply some information on whether redcine works on your system or not. Please be brief and please don't discuss the results. I'd like to compile a list of systems and mainly graphics cards that work / don't work.

Please include:

- laptop, mac pro, etc.
- system hardware (cpu, memory)
- Operating System (OS X, Windows, please include version numbers)
- graphics card (vendor, model, memory, driver version)

Keep in mind that supported platforms are Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and Windows XP Professional SP 2 32-bit. For the former we advice ATI and for the latter an NVidia board.

If you see gray pictures instead of images or image processing is not working, this might be happening:
- OS X with ATI, quit & restart the program, should fix your problem
- On OS X, try reinstalling the application and run repair disk permissions
- You might have an unsupported graphics card / platform / driver or too old graphics card

REDCine fails on full-res decodes (entire screen garbled).

MacBook Pro 2.16Ghz, 2GB Ram
Mac OS 10.5.1
ATI Radeon X1600, 128MB Ram

Details:
When attempting to view footage at full-res, or export a full-res tiff, the entire screen gets completely garbled and I have to force quit. Everything else works fine (that I can tell).

REDCINE report:

Using Mac Pro 8 core and MacBook Pro 17 " REDCINE works well on MAC OS X Leopard 10.5.1.

Also REDCINE works well using Windwos XP SP2 on MacBook Pro (1/4 res High realtime playback).

REDCINE for Windows XP SP2 on Mac Pro still is not good because of my display's driver bug.

Maybe I should pull out one of ATI Radeon X1900 cards to try out with one card.
Anyway Windows XP SP2 is one nightmare system and time consuming to fix all things.
Later will come another report about solving this bug.

System 1:
Macbook Pro
2.33GHz C2D, 2GB, ATI X1600, OSX 10.5.1

Everything seems to work OK, render times are on par with what others are reporting. However, my shot icons do not display images of the clips, they are just grey boxes in both the player and library. Everything else seems to be working just as it should.

...Somewhat confused over the grey box problem. Because I don't have that problem on system #2. ...Is it an OSX 10.5 / Leopard issue?

System #2:
Apple iMac 24" 2.33GHz C2D, 2 GB, ATI X1600, OSX 10.4.11
All working just fine, speed seems the same as on the Macbook Pro. No grey box/icon problem.

System 3:
AMD X2 2.4GHz Dual-Core
2GB RAM, nVidia nForce4 chipset, EVGA G-Force 7800GTX 512MB
Windows XP, updated current, latest drivers from nVidia.com.

Everything works great. Playback is choppy unless it's on 1/4 res high or a lower setting than that. Overall, speed seems to be on par with my Macbook Pro. Render out Tiff sequence is SLOW!!! ~724 frames or whatever for two clips in the timeline took about 38 minutes, much slower than I expected for this system since it's still a pretty good sysem for everything else. HDD is not a bottleneck, system had two 500GB 7200rpm Hitachi drives in a RAID-0 as the work drive.

System 4: (just tried this one for grins)
AMD FX-55 single core with G-Force 6800 Ultra video card, 2GB RAM and nForce-2 chipset.

All working very well, but it's slower than the other systems.

Will be testing on an 8-core (dual 2.66GHz quad-core) PC tomorrow afternoon. It's running Vista with 8GB of RAM, will be interesting to see what happens when REDCINE can have a bit over 3GB allocated to it. Video card in that system is an nVidia 8800GTS, don't remember how much onboard video memory (512MB I think).

I will try to test a couple Mac Pro systems over the next week, but don't know when/if I'll get to that. They're not my systems and I don't have them directly available. I'll be upgrading my G5 Quad to a new Intel-based Mac Pro once Apple updates their offerings.

I've fixed the grey box issue with the Macbook Pro. Removing REDCINE and then re-installing seems to have fixed it.

MSI GeForce 7900 GT (driver 163.71)

One difference, on this machine REDCINE runs on the two CRT monitor pluged to the video card, which is not the case with the PentiumDual and the Quadro 3450. The settings are both on horizontal extension (not sure it's the english word, but hope you understand).

How much Ram do you have in your 8-core Rob? wondering why people are getting different performance on their 8-cores with the same grx cards.

Rob Lohman
11-28-2007, 01:45 PM
I have 2 GB in it. However, my number was running under bootcamp in XP. For REDCINE I think we still have to do some additional optimization for OS X, so that might be a bit slower. I'll look into that.

...maybe it's the difference in the x1900 drivers between XP and OSX, the mac ones underclock the x1900 apparently.

Rob Lohman

Noticed it on Barefeats, i'm no expert but Apple seem to underclock grx cards to keep the fan noise down.

Apple "detuned" the X1900 XT to run at 600 core clock speed and 650 memory clock speed. In the Windows PC world, a Radeon X1900 XT typically runs at 625MHz core clock speed and 725MHz

I am wanting to process multiple clips in Redcine and output individual QT files. I'm on an Intel quadcore MacPro. When I start the process, it works fine for the first 2 clips, then I get the single frame for the entire clip problem for the rest of the shots in the sequence. It's repeatable and if I babysit, I can cut off the 2 processed clips and keep starting over. Obviously this is not an optimal workflow. The only thing I can think that might be a little different is that my user profile is on our X-serve, not a local user.

Has anyone had this problem, I couldn't find anything by searching the threads.

Upgraded video card to geforce 8800 gt 512 mb

Single frame output on all formats

2Gb is probably not enough, WinDoZe will eat up ~300 to 450Mb
if you only upgraded the card, popped in a new one and you are trying to working a data set that is four times larger, i'd suggest, the following

if you can tweak the clock on the video card until it almost becomes unstable.

check/google your card see if anyone has any problems with the drivers you have, sometimes an older driver is better.

completely removing/uninstalling display drivers

boot back in vga mode with command prompt

check the system32 for any leftover files

delete all files in system32\dllcache

reapply SP2

reload drivers

turn off all garbage services running, disable networking as well.

set a single display for something mediocre so the graphics card isn't breaking its balls to keep up with your screen and the processing

defrag your hard drive/raid

make your swap file about 4GB on a different drive than data file, make sure the swap file is continguous

apply these registry hacks
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\PriorityControl]
"Win32PrioritySeparation"=dword:00000026

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\FileSystem]
"NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation"=dword:00000001

"AlwaysUnloadDLL"=dword:00000001
"DesktopProcess"=dword:00000001
"NoResolveTrack"=dword:00000001

delete all garbage from your temp directories

defrag

reboot

check task manager, see how much physical ram is available, should be ~1.7 Gb if you're lucky

when you start the processing have the task manager up and running, set the affinity to three of the four processors and then crank up the priority

It would be sweet if you could enlarge the curves control to do more fine tuned stuff. I imagine someone might say that redcine is only for a "first light" what have you, and you can do more precise stuff in other programs later when you conform and whatnot.. But still, I don't see why this feature couldn't be added.

Windows XP SP2 on HP/Intel DOES NOT WORK.

I have an HP xw8000 with two 3.2GHz Xeon (i.e. 4 total cores) and 4GB of physical RAM, NVidia Quadro NVS 280 SD w 64MB feeding 3 displays.

REDCINE comes up with the player window on Monitor 1 and displays the big REDCINE logo and Beta V1.0 banner. None of the buttons do anything - not even "Exit REDCINE" If I click in the preview area, sometimes a "No Media" thumbnail will pop up on the right side of the screen and sometimes an additional toolbar will appear across the top.

The program allocates about 1.5 GB of memory when it launches but uses little CPU time after the initial load. I've updated to the latest NVidia driver to no avail.

this looks like one problem at least, there may be more.

the registry is missing this file, so at first glance i'd say this is a Redcine codec problem. i don't know what is in this file, but probably the codec compressor information.

can you download previous versions of redcine?

search your hard drive, maybe the installer put it in the wrong location.

fire up regmon, it should look like this.

First, let me say our boy GAlexandar or "Chaos" should be working at RED. I think he's fixed the First Frame Frozen issue. I will post this in it's own thread.
Look for it

Recine Sharpen feature snapping on playback

Sharpen > at 50%

Adjust to say 40 >

scrub clip and Sharpen snaps to either 1% or 0%

Need to reset all to get to 50 again.

The footage plays in real time from the raid in med proxy mode and all of the Redcine tools work great, until we try to export where the errors occur, or the frames that do render are corrupt. I reported this in the 4k work flow forum as well and Brent is aware of the issue.

on my macbook pro crashes redcine in that case when the project and all r3d files are on an external harddisk - exit redcine - and if the external disk with the last project is not mounted and you open redcine then crashes, because it is not finding the last opened project.

Well I've been beating my head against something trying to get some non-trashed output from RedCine on my home system.
Specs.
Dual core 6600
4 Gigs ram
ATI X1950 w/updated drivers
In an earlier version I could get some QT output without overlays but nothing but highly posterized and black frames now.
We have it on an 8 core mac at work and it's perfect.
edit: it is trashed on everything QT, DPX, TIFFs etc.

I also get trashed output (black frames or "rainbowed color" frames) from a latptop running a quadro NVS140 also on XP

useless.

Try upping your RAM. It's not useless.

Hello, greetings to everybody from the Basque Country:

Although itīs our first time in this site weīve been visiting it from the begining. Itīs not our first time working with Red cameras and we never had any problems with the cameras nor with the RedCine, but this time we are unable to load RedCine. We followed Jarredīs instructions but solved nothing. As the RedCine folder didnīt appear in the Library I created it manualy. I also installed old versions of Redcine but they didnīt work either. Apart from that an extrange thing occurs: I can only open the application from the disc image.
I am exporting 4K 25fps and 2K 120fps footage to 1920 x 1080 Aja Kona 10 bit RGB.

Iīm really scared and think Iīm gonna be fired, there seems to be no way out of this

thank to the beautiful Red community!

I have been testing my system with various codecs and workflows.

IMO - since I'm not as knowledgeable as some - the key to a painless workflow is ALL THE RAM you can afford, and a capture card such as the KONA 3.

I have transcoded 30 min of 2K 2:1 footage from the .r3d files in Redcine to UC10bit 4:2:2 in 12 min. Same footage into AJA 10bit LOG RGB in 11 min. All as quicktimes.

Again, MORE RAM AND a CAPTURE CARD are necessary. I have posted my complete system specs below on this thread. Someone please correct me, point out flaws in my thinking, etc.

But I'm a happy camper.

What is the relation with capture card ? as i understood it is related to graphics card ?

Not related to the graphics card.

It does promote/add to system performance in relation to FCP. It also allows the connections (inputs/outputs) of monitors, decks, audio equipment, etc.

You can check it out at www.aja.com

Look for KONA 3 -

Kowboy, those render times are fantastic.
Two questions - can you give render times for 4k 16:9 footage, and
how much do your raid arrays contribute to the quick render times?

I haven't tried any 4K 16x9 yet - was under the impression 16x9 wasn't supported yet?

Not sure about the RAID array's contribution either. I attribute most of it to the KONA 3 card and the maxed out RAM.

Been having issues getting all of the OUTPUT settings just right - until today. Everything seems fine and I'm super happy with my results.

normal output: Quicktime ProRes HQ @ RED ONE 2K normal/standard
result: WORKS
opinions:
project settings: great range of formatting possibilities, just have to double check when reopening a project that the defaults don't reset themselves, lost half a days work to rerendering material that slipped from red1 2k @23.98 to 2048x1024@24
shot settings: very intuitive interface, even inexperianced asst. editors can jump on board with shot setups for proper pan&scan results
color: love the first light correction! nice balance between the somewhat bland raw data and our finished product, gives our rough edits a nice look for clients to enjoy that's fairly close to our final balancing
renders: could be faster, we usually top out @ 3-4fps would love to see it hit the same rate we get for L&T of R3D's or even as fast as L&T for P2, but we know that's awhile off!

G

yeah that would be nice, that's our biggest gripe here at our shop. When we have to use RC to digitize anything it's always a lot of footage so we try to spread it out over several systems to get to editing faster. After our first project it became painfully apparent that each station was customized to the user including their display settings and preferences for color, we had 5 different looks come back to me which meant we had to go back and redo EVERYTHING!

how hard would it be to get a throughput from kona? isn't RED supposed to be all buddy buddy with AJA?

Quicktime Prores export works with a single clip. As soon as you try to batch export all but first clip are freeze frames (and the freeze frame in each instance is from the first clip!)

DPX export does work though.

REDCINE playback working great in XP x64, however when I try outputing several frames of 'A002_C003_07236R_001.R3D' as TIFF files it crashes on the 13th frame... The first 12 frames are rendered out fine.

Hi Rob.
I don't know if this old system is interesting to you - but here it is:

My system:

XP, SP2, Redcine 3.12
MB: Asus PC-DL DeLuxe
CPU: 2x Intel Xeon 2.0 ghz, 533MHz FSB
Chipset: Intel 82875P (Canterwood) North Bridge
Memory: 1gb dual-channel DDR 333
Video: Nvidia gf5200 (agp)

This is a fairly old system (2004), but still works for me for my music production since the processing power is exellent. I normally don't use this for video.

- Redcine plays on 1/4 medium res - a little bit slower than normal. At full quality I can only preview single frames - playback is very slow.
- I can't do anything in the color-menu - nothing happens as i move any of the sliders.
- I cannot export files - the result is a black screen. The Burn-in is there though. I'm trying to figure out this one - mayby it's a codec problem.
- Redcine crashed occasionally untill I set the Nvidia-settings to "High performance" and "anisotropic filtering - off"

Since my other station is occupied for several weeks now I've been trying to get this station to render some previews of a project without luck. I'm still trying to figure out how to export a 1080HD H.264 quicktime file. If you have a hint i apreciate it.

K;)

Note: I am just playing with clips posted at Scarlet user or on Red relay to learn the process at this point.

I have tried loading Jarred's 2k dragstrip clip from redrelay and encoding to output at native size using every format and filter combination available except QT, I only have the QT player not the full version. All produce garbled frames, noise and banding, color shift, no usable image. everything else about the program works just fine except the encoding

FYI

Amazingly RedCine works on my lowly, budget laptop

REDCINE - 3.18
OS - VISTA Home 32bit
CPU - Single: AMD Turion(tm) 64 Mobile Technology MK-36
Memory - 2GBs
Graphics - ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 128MB
HD - Single 60GB

Just playing with the drag racing clips - all picture controls work fine, can export as Tiff, Jpeg and Quicktime H.264 mov (had to install latest Quicktime Player, 7.6) BUT they ALL appear as if they have a white fill ~30% transparency applied???? (otherwise perfect) Snapshots are OK.

Plays the 4K drag clip very slowly - about quarter speed at 1/4 Res Medium (hardly surprising).

NOT WORKING (fixed, see below)

Dual Opteron 250 (BL Troy core CPUs)
4GB Registered ECC RAM
Tyan S2875 board (AMD 8111/8151 chipset)
nVidia 7600GS / 256MB / AGP
Fresh XP pro install, SP3 + hotfixes
Tried both 175.19 and 93.71 vid drivers, same problem
Tried both REDCINE 318 and 315, same problem

Upon launch, redcine will show the logo screen and version number, and soon thereafter hard-locks the computer. I have to push the reset button. The log files end at different places each time I try this, which is very weird. It's like it's locking up not at a particular point of loading the app, but whenver it gets around to initializing some outside softare/hardware. No clue yet. Otherwise the system runs fine.

UPDATE - WORKING
Changed out the video card for an nVidia 6800GT. Redcine now launches and I can work with it, tho it has locked up a few times. Will see how that shakes out over time. I chalk this one up to a flakey video card.
