We have had two full sets of Ultra Primes out on rental from Abel Cine Tech here in NY pretty much since we got our cameras. We LOVE them.

Abel has two sets, they are not exactly the same, but 14mm - 135mm - I'll try to check and post exact lenses -

Here is my set:
Arri Zeiss UltraPrime Set
• Arri Zeiss Ultra Prime 12mm T2
• Arri Zeiss16mm UltraPrime T1.9
• Arri Zeiss 24mm UltraPrime LDS T1.9
• Arri Zeiss 32mm UltraPrime LDS T1.9
• Arri Zeiss 50mm UltraPrime T1.9
• Arri Zeiss 85mm UltraPrime T1.9
• Arri Zeiss 135mm UltraPrime T1.9

My next addition will be the 180mm, a very sweet lens.

But of course you can order whatever focal lengths you want...these are the typical lenses, they also have the in-between fl's.

I finally pulled out my Standard Speed Zeiss lenses today and an doing some comparison tests between them and the Ultra Primes. The first thing you will notice is the physical size difference between these lenses. The Ultra Primes seem to be the perfect size physically for the RED ONE Body (see attached images), on the other hand the Standard Speeds seem way too small for the body. Obviously this has nothing to do with performance, but the Zeiss 2.1's just look dinky on the body.

As far as results go, I was extremely impressed with the little 2.1 lenses...I haven't used them in over 10 years and I forgot how sharp these little buggers are, especially the 32mm. It looked great, very sharp image and nice contrast. The Ultra Prime had a much warmer look though...but considering the price difference the 2.1's are a very nice value.

I do have a extra 16mm and 20mm I will be selling soon, or trading for a 24mm and 100mm.

I understand. Also I noticed in the still shots with the standard speeds you were set up for some hardcore iris ramps ;)

Used the Ultra primes on the weekend for a Yamaha commercial, they looked beautiful.

The 16mm showed no visible portholeing.

Thats only an issue with the 2.1 standard speeds on the widest lenses.

The Super Speeds, and Ultra Primes are fine.

Digitalfx,

I can't believe you have the famous JonathanLB in your quotes, right there with Bob Dylan. Actually now that I think about it, JonathanLB probably has more memorable quotes than Dylan.

Or the infamous tripod thread. Jonathan is going to be the first person in the world to make a film with Hollywood production value for $5, mark my words.

Jonathan, just having some fun. No disrespect intended.

Ya until Johnathan pointed it out to me I had no idea I had become infected with retardation. Im worried it happened in film school or my first year of working on films. Somewhere around then I learned to respect all the skill of all the various crew positions that made up a complete crew. I had no idea I would become retarded in the process. Can anyone help me? Do you know the cure?

If you'd like to purchase ultraprimes, what's the cheapest and best way to do it.
Get in touch with zeiss itself, or ARRI. Any thoughts appreciated.

Ealier there has been mentioned that Arri would make some discounts for redusers, would this be for these items as well you suppose?

Yo digitalFX, I'd be more than happy to take that 20mm off your hands. And I'm planning to come to the Mardi Gras - though I'm hoping to get a 20 or 24 before then.

Those are the least common lenses, most DP's prefer the 24, 32, 50 in the Ultras. Any particular reason you prefer the other lenses?

Well, the Rental Houses I deal with stock what we want...not what they want us to use. If that wasnt the case they would not remain in business long.

Actually the 65mm is well known for it's beauty. It's the perfect lens for beauty portraits. On the Cooke S4's it even has soft focus attachments as an option, just for that purpose.
I'd say that favorite lenses are 24, 32 and 65 (coming from a european opinion).

Hi,

There are 1 set of Cooke S4's & 2 Arr 435's in Switzerland, 2 years ago there was just 1 435 & no Cookes! The most modern sync sound camera is a Arri 535. As it happens there are 2 film rental houses but budgets are rather low so they mainly stock Arri III's !

yup. except that Mitch guy (just kiddin!)

done business with Abel FOREVER. A couple feature films per year. They have saved my ass many, many times.

As far as Ultras - well ... I am NOT a DP - (I do shoot some) - but I look at endless footage in a "R&D based" post environment - with many applications - I LOVE the images you get with Ultra Primes. And do I like the size of the lenses for focus. Only glass that compares IMHO is Cooke S4s. Again, I'm not a DP.

As far as Red goes ... well ... they defy all logic and probability, surpass any liberal expectations - and they are fun, cool and exciting too.

I'm always dropping by Abel in Burbank, they're great there, Juliette really took care of collimating my standard speed set and at a very reasonable price too. They also have an awesome Zacuto display where you can build little pieces for your rig. I think they are about to or just took delivery or of an Ultra Prime set in Burbank.
