For all who would like to see how the RAW workflow actually behaves on their machines it would be great to open up an own section for R3D files.
If been looking around and other than the two clips from Jim I couldn't find anything. Any links for me?

Thanks,
Sebastian

One more: MrGlory posted a .r3d clip from his warehouse sequence:

Sounds like a good idea. Actually, I'm kind of surprised no one else has posted anything yet! Maybe opening an .R3D sub-forum would help get things rolling...

This is kinda where that should be posted.. once enough people start posting footage though we definitely an separate footage from field tests.

Where are these clips from Jim in R3D format?

Thanks,

How many R3D have been posted? Just three, right?

Just want to keep this one high on the list. Any one out there have any more r3d's to play with?

Nope. I don't think so.

cool stuff, can upload some screenshots made by redcine, btw do you have your serial number now?

1. s-curve, add some tint
2. original r3d
3. wb set to 15000, just did it dont know the cons, just played around.

EDIT/ other people can grade much better----concrete, i am waiting

Very nice! We are up to four known files now, the online R3D universe just expanded 33%. Or more; at about 1 GB, it's bigger than the other three combined.

this shot was 48 fps based on 23,98 fps....
48 fps is written on the clap
in redcine i cant find the 48 fps info...
where is it written

edit/ oh man wrong thread, TO red test

'the three known files'

that sounds so mythic, i love it. like lost, magical scrolls or something. soon, we hope to produce thousands of them and then we can look back on this and have a laugh.

3 of the 4 reported R3D files are now on RedRelay:

I'm feeling some pain with the 4th. Haha... I crack myself up.

You so funny.:)

There's a new .r3d from Feel My Pain up at

http://www.dghagey.com/Director_of_Photography/Red.html

This one is 4K. There's some specular highlights that show the limits of the dynamic range.

... very nice lighting gregorius!
you could tell us a bit of the technique behind this shot's magic.
i'm no DP and i'm very fascinated.
as an example, we notice the different color temperatures between the various lights ... i'm trying to learn a bit but i'm still confused about different light bulbs and their color temperature vs. RED sensor native color temperature ...

How about 2k ProRes Files? Anyone interested in that? R3D is huge and would take forever to upload.

Thanks Valde.

I don't know if this is the best thread to discuss the techniques of posted footage, but I will say that it's important to understand a little bit of the science behind colour temperature to really make strides in your lighting technique.

In a very small nutshell here it is: Light either appears neutral (no caste) or it has a warm/amber hue vs. cool/blue hue. Tungsten lighting is warm whereas daylight is cool. If you are white balanced to daylight it will appear neutral and tungsten will appear orange. If you are white balanced to tungsten it will appear neutral and daylight will appear blue. You can also white balance somewhere in between so tungsten sources are a little warm and daylight sources are a little cool. Filters can be used on the camera or lights to change the colour temperature if white balancing isn't appropriate.

There is also a subset of colour temperature to be aware of which is magenta vs. green (ie. fluorescent tubes). For example cool daylight balanced HMI's or fluorescents can have a green or magenta cast to them. I try to avoid this cast by either white balancing the camera or filtering the lights (unless I'm going for a gritty or stylized realist look). I would recommend searching the web for more info or picking up a copy of the Set Lighting Technician's Handbook to get a bit more depth on colour temperature.

What I did specifically for the shot of Barb onstage was to hang a Diva 400 above her with half tungsten and half daylight tubes and a flozier. Her backlight was 2 1k parcans with double Full CTB gel. The rest of the stage was lit with 2 other 1k parcans with medium red gel. I used lots of smoke on set and didn't shade the lens from the backlights in order to get as much flare as possible and creat a dreamy quality to the shot (along with shooting at 48fps). The Red was set to tungsten balance and 320 ISO.

The alley shot had Barb lit with a handheld Diva400 on a grip arm bulbed tungsten with Full CTO and the flozier. She was kicked with a 2k fresnel with Full CTO and the alley was kicked with a 1200HMI. When she bumps into her stalker she is side lit by a 575HMI.

If this is a bit too techno-babble I would suggest a cinematography basics thread or forum. Actually the one on CML is worth checking out.

Thanks for that description, it's always interesting to me to see how people do their lighting! and I even learned a new word, "flozier". (I've never lit with fluoro fixtures so that's a whole different world).

thanks gregorius!

very much useful, already started to search more resources online, thanks again!

Anyway i think you're right when you say that questions about lighting basics maybe should be posted somewhere else, but in fact very brief descriptions about lighting and other technical aspects along with every posted footage would be a very good idea.
In fact, it's far better to understand technique watching directly the results, in the same thread. This would make this posts and this community an invaluable resource.

"flozier".
http://www.johnbarry.com.au/kinoflo/kinodiva/kinodiva.html

I laughed when I saw the name the first time I worked with a Diva. It's a piece of grid cloth (diffuser) with elastic ties that stretch around the Kino, kind of like a 'brazier'.

No becasue that closes out everyone on a PC, and also 'bakes' the file limiting just how much you can experament with in terms of coloring.

End of the day its up to the Red owners to post whatever they like however they like but its clear the masses are crying out for the purest of source material aka R3d.
