Ok so I asked this question a few times to 4k@red and then to the core and I never got a response so I feel like its time to ask it publicly.
So I'm pretty clear on the fact that the red is going
to blow away any previous video camera affordable to
an owner operator. But I'm not totally convinced that
the camera is going to be a "film killer" especially
for music videos and commercials, which I believe
would be a strong market for the camera since they
want a film look but don't need to go back to film at
the end. RED hasn't talked about some important
behaviors that many pro-film cameras have that we have
yet to see in any video camera, including I believe
the DALSA, but which DP's use on a daily basis with
film cameras. For example:
Can the frame rate change in shot? Can it be
controlled externally?
What shutter angles (digital shutter speeds) are
available?
Can the shutter angle change in shot?
If so, (angle or frame rate), is this rate transmitted
externally to control iris compensation?
What is the longest exposure time (lowest frame rate)?
i.e. can the camera do long exposure timelapse? Can it
go lower than 1 frame per second? (more of a request
than a question I guess.) I believe this has already been answered yes.
How much can the functioning of the camera body be
controlled entirely remotely? If so what kind of
protocol would control it?
Thanks,
Ian Bloom
